Russia May Annex South Georgia and Sell Oil to the East

It appears that Russia plans to annex, Ossetia, a region in South Georgia:

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — Russian troops remaining in Georgian territory are effectively preventing Georgians from returning to their homes, a U.N. representative said Saturday…

The zones are near the border with separatist South Ossetia, the disputed province at the heart of the conflict that has ruined Georgia-Russia ties and caused the biggest crisis in Moscow’s relations with the West since the 1991 Soviet collapse…

Russia supplies the EU with about a third of its oil and about two-fifths of its natural gas. In an article published Sunday, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said European nations should adopt a united energy policy to avoid becoming too dependent on Russia…

Brown said he spoke with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev by telephone Saturday, and told the Russian leader “to expect a determined European response” to the crisis.

With EU leaders set to huddle Monday on how to deal with an increasingly assertive Russia, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has angrily warned Europe not to do America’s bidding and has said that Moscow does not fear Western sanctions.

Adding to the tension, a lawmaker in South Ossetia said Russia intends to eventually absorb the province at the center of the five-day war.

South Ossetian parliamentary speaker Znaur Gassiyev said Friday that Russia will absorb South Ossetia within “several years” or even earlier. He said that position was “firmly stated” by both the province’s leader, Eduard Kokoity, and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in talks in Moscow earlier this week.

The statement stoking Georgian suspicion that Moscow’s intent all along has been to annex the South Ossetia. http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5iUA357W77ndvCMh32VlQqdGj53mAD92SU65O0

I think that it will more than a united European energy policy that will come out of this. I believe that this and other moves that the Russians have made will get the Europeans to really decide that they need their own stronger military.

Russia, apparently anticipating economic sanctions, has a plan around them:

Telegraph – Aug 31, 2008

The announcement on the eve of Monday’s Brussels summit on Russia’s occupation of Georgia put European states on notice that Moscow is developing an alternative client base in the Far East.

To stave off tough measures, including possible sanctions, Moscow has sent a variety of signals that it will use its energy clout to retaliate against any European reprimand for its refusal to implement a ceasefire with Georgia.

Russia’s Asian pipeline is a technically challenging effort to link the oilfields of Eastern Siberia to Russia’s Pacific coast thousands of miles to the east. Mr Putin visited Kozmino, a giant oil terminal, where the resources will be loaded for transportation to China and Japan.

The two-stage pipeline has been delayed by a year and building costs have soared as constructors grapple with the harsh conditions of the Siberian tundra, where temperatures regularly fall to -50 C and infrastructure is nonexistent.

When it is inaugurated the Kremlin will have succeeded in diversifying its financial dependence on energy sales to the European Union…

In the wake of a Czech deal to host an American missile shield, Russia’s delivers from the Friendship pipeline fell 40 per cent but “technical” difficulties were blamed for the drop-off.

In the last four years, Estonia, Latvia and Ukraine have also suffered mysterious shortages while embroiled in disputes with Russia.

Mr Putin lashed out at the European summit, defending the country’s incursion into Georgia. “The truth is on our side,” he told Vesti-24 television.

“We act absolutely correctly, morally and in accordance with international law. Someone in Europe wants to serve someone else’s foreign-policy interests.” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/russia/2656372/Vladimir-Putin-demands-Asia-pipeline-as-warning-to-Europe.html

Europe will not sit on its hand and put up with this.  It will most likely decide that it really needs military strength to back up it economic strength and political influence.  Europe will re-arm.

However, as I have long been reporting, the Bible indicates that Russia, China, and other Asian powers will get together–and ultimately attack the future European King of the North (Daniel 11:44-45).

Hurricane Gustav Over Cuba

The Mayor of New Orleans called for an evacuation because of Hurricane Gustav:

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) – New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered the city’s more than 239,000 residents to evacuate on Sunday in the face of powerful Hurricane Gustav, which he called “the mother of all storms.”…

Gustav crashed across the Cuban mainland on Saturday and could hit the U.S. Gulf Coast as a Category 4 storm, the second-highest on the five-stage Saffir-Simpson scale, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

SIGNIFICANT FLOODING EXPECTED…

All major Louisiana interstates will allow only one-way traffic away from the coast starting at 4 a.m. CDT (5 a.m. EDT) on Sunday. The last flight out of the New Orleans airport is scheduled to depart at 6 p.m. CDT (7 p.m.) on Sunday.

In all, 11.5 million people are in the path of Gustav, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The USA has had a lot of flooding and levy problems this year.

In a day or so, we should know how serious this storm really is.

A New Orleans newspaper reported:

Forecasters now expect Gustav to slam into the U.S. Gulf Coast, most likely in central Louisiana, around 2 p.m. Monday.

Two Confused Seventh-day Adventists

James and Ellen White
James and Ellen White Established the Seventh-day Adventist Church

COGwriter

In its latest weekly update, LCG had the following news item:

Everyone Doing what Is Right in their Own Eyes… Two Seventh-Day Adventists from California just wrote a book on how to properly count the Sabbath. They propose that the weekly cycle actually “floats” from month to month, starting over with every new moon. Because of this, most weeks in a month are seven days long, but one week each is longer—up to 13 days long, depending on how the new moon falls. Thus, the Sabbath could fall on any day of the week… even Sunday. This idea is not new and has proponents around the world (World Net Daily, August 22, 2008). However, proponents fail to take into account simple biblical examples, including the seven-day week established at creation, the command to work six days and rest on the seventh, the counting of the Feast of Pentecost “always” being 50 days and always ending on the first day of the week, etc. God warned against everyone doing what is right in their own eyes (Deuteronomy 12:8). He clearly identified the fact that the Jews would be keepers of the oracles of God—this includes the calendar (Romans 3:2). God directed that we look to the Church and not to individuals, for direction and judgment on foods, festivals, new moons and Sabbaths (Colossians 1:18, 2:16-17). When we rely on our own understanding and on our own hearts to lead us into the truth, we will always be led astray (Proverbs 3:5; 14:12; Jeremiah 17:9)—and the end result is confusion and chaos which is not God’s way (1 Corinthians 14:33). The Scriptures reveal that doing what is right in our own eyes only leads to problems (see Judges 21:25)

Of course, the above is NOT the position of the SDAs–the books is simply by two SDA members who have chosen to misinterpret the Bible. Faithful SDAs observe the Sabbath every seventh day, which is basically Saturday.

But sadly turning away from parts of the Bible seems to happen to some people of pretty much all groups.

Might Sarah Palin Fulfill Prophecy?

Sarah Palin
Sarah Palin, Vice Presidential Nominee

COGwriter

On August 29, 2008, John McCain announced that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was his choice for Vice President. This is the first time that a woman has received that nomination from one in the Republican Party.

On the news, Sarah Palin was quoted from an earlier interview where she said something to the effect, “I’m just your ordinary hockey mom”. She is the mother of five children.

Since those of us in groups like the Living Church of God do not vote in these elections, why am I mentioning the possibility of a woman president?

Because I believe that it John McCain wins (and especially if he dies in office), she will partially fulfill a prophecy in Isaiah 3:12:

As for My people, children are their oppressors, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths…

Of course, women are influential in the English-speaking nations and it is not absolutely required that the USA itself have a woman president, but I do feel that if we do get one, that this will be a partial, but significant, fulfillment of that prophecy.

Both biblical and Roman Catholic prophecies indicate the destruction of the English-speaking peoples and I would not be surprised if a major attack by the European Beast power will occur during a female presidency (though if Sarah Palin was to be USA vice-president beginning in 2009, I tend to believe that this would more likely be in a second term–and it probably is not likely that Republicans would win four presidential elections in a row–but stranger things have happened).

Is Sarah Palin the Antichrist? According to the Bible, no she cannot be (the reasons and scriptures are given in my previous post Barack Obama is Not the Antichrist, nor is Joe Biden, Democratic vice presidential nominee–nor is John McCain).

9/04/04 Update: Notice some information on Sarah Palin’s religious background:

In June, Mrs. Palin told ministry students at her former church that in going to war with Iraq, the United States is “on a task that is from God,” the Associated Press reported.

Mrs. Palin’s brand of evangelical Protestantism is especially well-disposed to the preservation of Israel for biblical reasons, said Merrill Matthews, an evangelical Christian and a Dallas-based health-policy specialist.
Mrs. Palin was baptized as a teenager at the Wasilla Assembly of God Church. She frequently attends the Juneau Christian Center, which is also part of the Pentecostal Assemblies of God. Her home church is the Church of the Rock, an independent congregation.

“Historically, the Assemblies of God have been dispensationalists, which means they believe in ‘the rapture’ of Christians that takes them out of the world,” said Mr. Matthews. “Central to that position is a very strong support for Israel. It’s integral to their view of both prophecy and politics. Denying Israel is almost like denying the faith.” (
Evangelical faith drives Palin’s pro-Israel view. Washington Times, September 4, 2008. http://washingtontimes.com/news/2008/sep/04/palins-evangelical-faith-drives-pro-israel-view/)

Her religious views most likely will affect her political decisions.  And since there is no pre-tribulation rapture (please see Is There A Secret Rapture for the Church? When and Where is the Church Protected?), she may make some decisions based upon biblical misinterpretation.

We seem to be in turbulent times.

And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:37).

Barack Obama is Not the Antichrist

Barack Obama
Barack Obama

COGwriter

Time reported the following article yesterday:

The Web’s Word: Obama Is Not the Antichrist

TIME – Aug 29, 2008
One of the most widely searched terms containing “Obama” over the last four weeks — it was the seventh most popular term, accounting for 0.45% of all U.S. Internet searches that contained “Obama” — was “Obama Antichrist.” At first I thought it was a response to the McCain campaign ad called “The One,” which ridicules Obama for having a messiah complex and which many people thought drew a comparison between Obama and the Antichrist. But an analysis of Internet search data reveals that queries relating to Obama and the Antichrist started as early as January 2008, preceding the McCain video by over seven months. http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1837170,00.html

Can Barack Obama be the Antichrist? While Barack Obama may indeed win and may indeed be president during the time of the demise of the United States, he is NOT the final Antichrist.

The terms ‘antichrist’ and ‘antichrists’ are only used in the Bible five times (four and one respectively) and are found in four verses of the Bible, all written by the Apostle John. Those verses are II John 7, I John 2:18, I John 2:22, and I John 4:3. And since all of them discuss some aspect of theology, it is clear that the final Antichrist is mainly a religious figure.

Since the Bible shows that the Antichrist is a religious leader who works with a political leader, this rules out Barack Obama as he is a political, not a religious, leader (and John McCain for that matter).

Update 11/19/08: Because of the times that we are in and various prophecies, it seems likely that even though Barack Obama is NOT the final Antichrist that he will likely enable the rise of the Beast of Revelation (also known as the King of the North) and the King of the South who may be the Madhi that Shiite Muslims expect (see Barack Obama in Islamic Prophecy?).  For related information, please see the article Eight Reasons that Barack Obama May be Apocalyptic.

Update 02/17/09: Since more people have made claims about why they feel that Barack Obama is the Antichrist, a more detailed news item has been posted to address this, please see Eight More Reasons that Barak Obama is NOT the Antichrist.

John McCain Picks a Woman for VP

Sarah Palin
Sarah Palin, Vice Presidential Nominee

In a relatively surprising announcement, presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain picked Alaska governor Sarah Palin to be his vice-presidential running mate.

Here is some of what AOL has reported about that:

DAYTON, Ohio (Aug. 29) — John McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a conservative who shares his maverick streak, as his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

At a raucous rally in the swing state of Ohio, McCain said he made his pick after looking for a political partner “who can best help me shake up Washington and make it start working again for the people who are counting on us.”

This will make for an interesting race.

FWIW, for different reasons, I suspect that if John McCain or Barack Obama (Democratic party nominee) become president, that some nut may attempt to assassinate whichever one may win–or that John McCain may otherwise die in office.

June 30 Journal Out

Friday, August 29th, 2008

COGwriter

Even though it is the end of August, the latest issue (June 3o, 2008) of The Journal is now out.

Its focus seems to be more unitarian meetings, CGI in Jamaica, a new book by Alan Knight, and a UCM women’s meeting.  There were also the usual letters to the editor and columnists.

As I have reported on these unitarian meetings before, I would simply refer any who want to look into that subject to study the article Was Unitarianism the Teaching of the Bible or Early Church?

Related to Jamaica, that is the country that CGI has the most impact.  Jamaica is an outwardly religious country, and Ian Boyne (a Jamaican journalist who is also a CGI minister) has increased membership there.  In The Journal, Ian Boyne reported:

KINGSTON, Jamaica—A record 366 people turned up for Church of God International (CGI) Pentecost services June 8, 2008, in Kingston while about 100 persons attended Pentecost services at the other end of the island in St. James.

CGI was originally founded by the late Garner Ted Armstrong after he was put out of the old WCG (for more information on CGI, please see the article Teachings of the Church of God, International).

Wesley White reported the following on the UCM women’s conference:

Ala.—Upwardsoaring gas prices did not seem to deter enthusiastic participation in the 2008 United Christian Ministries (UCM) Women’s Conference July 18-20, 2008. Ladies came from faraway states such as Texas, Connecticut and Michigan for the fellowship, food, fun and inspiration. The conference is sponsored each year by United Christian Ministries. This year’s, with the theme “A Christian Woman’s Walk With Christ,” happened at the Fairfield Inn in Fultondale, a suburb of Birmingham, Ala. Though UCM founders Ray and Peggy Wooten have moved to Indiana from Alabama, they plan to hold the UCM Women’s Conferences in the Birmingham area each year.

This conference seems to be the biggest annual event (other than maybe the Feast of Tabernacles) that UCM is involved in.  Ray Wooten was an original supporter of UCG until it did not act as he hoped it hoped.

CG7’s Alan Knight wrote:

…in the Catholic concept of grace. The spiritual benefit imparted through communion is a gift from God. It ispure grace. The participant does not earn it through his own works.

On the other hand, this concept of salvation does require submission to a church organization that links church members to Christ.

In Catholic thinking, only the Catholic Church has the authority to perform the sacramental rituals, including communion. Supposedly Catholics inherited this right through the papacy’s descent from the apostle Peter at Rome. Since no one else has the right to perform the sacraments, therefore—they insist—you can be saved only through the Roman church.

Babylon again

Where did this notion come from? Though scholars have only partially pieced together the story, we have sufficient evidence to trace it all the way back to ancient Babylon.

Here, from our new volume Spirit of Antichrist, is a compressed explanation of what happened:
Ancient Babylon was famous as a center of magic and sorcery, but one important aspect of this fame stands out. Babylonians believed in an extremely intimate relationship with their gods. To personally interact with the gods, they believed that by certain rites of magic they could draw the essence of deity down into their statues.

Once that was accomplished they would dress and ritually feed the statues, even entertaining them to keep them happy.

I will not provide comment to the above, other than to say that the Roman Church used to have more doctrines similar to the Living Church of God than they now do and they changed many doctrines over time.  Those interested in learning more may wish to read the article Which Is Faithful: The Roman Catholic Church or the Living Church of God?

Anyway, the first and last pages of The Journal are available in pdf. format at www.thejournal.org/issues/issue129/jf063008.pdf

For other articles, a subscription is required. The editor of The Journal is Dixon Cartwright, a former member of WCG–The Journal is NOT a publication of the Living Church of God.

As many Bible readers are aware, a 200,000,000 man army coming from the kings of the east is mentioned in the Bible:

13 Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind. Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them (Revelation 9:13-15). 12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 15 Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” 16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon (Revelation 16:12-16).

The largest “kings of the east” would be Russia, China, and India.  And they are capable of fielding a 200,000,000 man army.

The following news item today was of interest:

Support for Russia at SCO Summit

The Hindu, India – Aug 29, 2008

MOSCOW: Russia has won crucial support for its peace efforts in South Ossetia from China and other allies in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

At a summit meeting in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on Thursday, the six-nation SCO security grouping explicitly backed Russia’s “active role” in restoring peace in the region and endorsing a six-point peace plan worked out jointly with France.

“The SCO states welcome the adoption in Moscow on August 12 of six principles of settling the conflict in South Ossetia and support Russia’s active role in contributing to peace and cooperation in the region,” said the leaders of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in a joint declaration adopted at their one-day summit.

Though the SCO leaders refrained from condemning Georgia’s military attack on its breakaway territory of South Ossetia, their solidarity with Russia stood in stark contrast with the West’s denunciation of the “Russian aggression” against Georgia. The SCO support came ahead of an EU summit meeting on Monday called to discuss ways to punish Russia…

“I hope [the SCO stand] will send a serious signal to those, who try… to justify the bloody adventure of the Georgian leadership,” said Mr. Medvedev, adding that Georgia’s “criminal actions” had been “connived and incited” from abroad.

At a one-to-one meeting with Mr. Medvedev, Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev said his country “understands and supports the measures taken by Russia”.

“I’m amazed at the West’s failure to acknowledge the fact that it was Georgian armed forces who attacked peaceful civilians in Tskhinvali,” said Mr. Nazarbayev in televised remarks. http://www.hindu.com/2008/08/29/stories/2008082961231600.htm.

While India was not part of that meeting, the fact is that India too, is indicating that its future may lie more with Russia and China than it does with the West (see Why Are Russia, China, and India Getting Together?).

The fact is that the Bible indicates that Russia, China, and India will work together militarily in the future.  This confederation is almost certain to be the source of the 200,000,000 man army of Revelation,

This endorsement of Russian actions in Georgia marks an important change in what is happening in that conflict, in that there now are players on the world scene that support Russia.  And presumably, Russia in the future will support China and perhaps others related to potential actions on their parts that are unpopular with the West.

Russia to Stop Oil to Germany?

The situation between Europe and Russia because of Georgia is getting even more tense as the following news item shows:

Russia may cut off oil flow to the West

Telegraph – Aug 28, 2008

Fears are mounting that Russia may restrict oil deliveries to Western Europe over coming days, in response to the threat of EU sanctions and Nato naval actions in the Black Sea.

Any such move would be a dramatic escalation of the Georgia crisis and play havoc with the oil markets.

Reports have begun to circulate in Moscow that Russian oil companies are under orders from the Kremlin to prepare for a supply cut to Germany and Poland through the Druzhba (Friendship) pipeline. It is believed that executives from lead-producer LUKoil have been put on weekend alert.

“They have been told to be ready to cut off supplies as soon as Monday,” claimed a high-level business source, speaking to The Daily Telegraph. Any move would be timed to coincide with an emergency EU summit in Brussels, where possible sanctions against Russia are on the agenda.

Any evidence that the Kremlin is planning to use the oil weapon to intimidate the West could inflame global energy markets. US crude prices jumped to $119 a barrel yesterday on reports of hurricane warnings in the Gulf of Mexico, before falling back slightly…

Such action would be seen as economic warfare but Russia has been infuriated by Nato meddling in its “backyard” and threats of punitive measures by the EU. Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov yesterday accused EU diplomats of a “sick imagination”.

Armed with $580bn of foreign reserves (the world’s third largest), Russia appears willing to risk its reputation as a reliable actor on the international stage in order to pursue geo-strategic ambitions.

“We are not afraid of anything, including the prospect of a Cold War,” said President Dmitry Medvedev…

Russian companies raise their funds on the world capital markets. Foreigners own half of the $1 trillion debt. Michael Ganske, Russia expert at Commerzbank, said the country was now facing a liquidity crunch. “Local investors are scared. They can see the foreigners leaving, so now they won’t touch anything either. The impact on the capital markets is severe,” he said. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2008/08/29/cnrussia129.xml

As I wrote last Sunday (see ), I believe that the Georgia situation is forcing the Europeans to realize that they must develop a stronger European military so that they cannot be bullied by Russia (or anyone else for that matter).

This situation, also however, may have severe negative implications on the future Russian economy.

“Cold wars” often turn into hot ones and the Bible is fairly clear that Russia (along with other Asian powers) will invade Europe (also to be known as “the King of the North) in Daniel 11:44-45. The time is NOT yet, but the current situation may be part of the prelude.

The Strength of Dollars Have Long Been Part of the “Pride of the Power” of the USA (which will be broken per Leviticus 26:19)

Yesterday, I posted that China has been supporting the dollar recently (see China Supporting the Dollar?).

Today, the following was in the news:

U.S., Europe and Japan planned dollar rescue

Reuters – Aug 28, 2008

TOKYO (Reuters) – The United States, Europe and Japan planned joint intervention to rescue the dollar when it was plunging in March at the time U.S. investment bank Bear Stearns collapsed, the Nikkei business newspaper reported…

An international financial source with knowledge of the discussions told Reuters that foreign exchange authorities from the three were in close contact at the time and discussed joint intervention if the dollar’s fall intensified.

Analysts said even though a rescue never took place, any such agreement on intervention would be important in the future if the dollar were to tumble again or other exchange rates move very sharply.

The officials did not specify levels for initiating the dollar rescue plan, but in the event of a free-fall they agreed to coordinate aggressive buying of the greenback and sell yen and euros, the newspaper said…

Under the intervention framework, Japan was to supply yen through currency swaps. The plan also called for using a previously established swap mechanism between the United States and Europe.

No coordinated intervention took place, however, as the dollar began recovering shortly after U.S. authorities brokered JP Morgan Chase’s buyout of Bear Stearns — the biggest victim so far in the year-old credit crisis. http://www.reuters.com/article/businessNews/idUST72020080828?feedType=RSS&feedName=businessNews&rpc=23&sp=true

Notice that the Europeans and Japanese decided that for part of 2008 that they would to support the US dollar.

But while the US dollar did not collapse, US debt increased.

What will happen when they realize that the US dollar should not be supported?

The Bible, in the Book of Habakkuk gives some clues:

3 For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hasteth toward the end, and shall not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not delay. 4 Behold, his soul is puffed up, it is not upright in him; but the righteous shall live by his faith. 5 Yea, moreover, wine is treacherous, a haughty man, that keepeth not at home; who enlargeth his desire as Sheol, and he is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all peoples.  6 Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and that ladeth himself with pledges! (Habakkuk 2:3-6, ASV)

7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty (Habakkuk 2:7, NKJV).

A collapse of the US dollar is coming.  And while it may take 4-10 years or so, it will surely come to pass.
