2012 Movie Shows Destruction of the Vatican

Friday, November 6th, 2009

COGwriter

A reader forwarded me the following article related to Sony’s upcoming 2012 movie:

The maker of the upcoming apocalyptic film “2012″ has conceded he enjoyed orchestrating the visual disintegration of the world’s religious symbols, such as the Vatican and the famous statue of Jesus overlooking Rio de Janeiro.

But he left an Islamic symbol alone because he feared the reaction from the Muslim world.

In an interview with the online SciFiWire website, Roland Emmerich said he had considered including the destruction of the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure in Mecca worshiped by Muslims as being built by Abraham and his son Ishmael.

“Well, I wanted to do that, I have to admit,” Emmerich said. “But my co-writer Harald [Kloser] said I will not have a fatwa on my head because of a movie. And he was right. … We have to all … in the Western world … think about this.”…

The new movie depicts the destruction of Rome, Rio and Washington. The White House gets it when a wave carries the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy and drops it atop the structure, and St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican rolls over onto a crowd of the faithful.

An excerpt has been made available:

“The whole Vatican kind of tips and kind of rolls over the people. It said something, because in the story, some people … believe in praying and prayer, and they pray in front of the church, and it’s probably the wrong thing, what they would do in that situation,” Emmerich told SciFi.

He also took out the famous statue of Jesus overlooking Rio.

“Because I’m against organized religion,” he said. http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=115011

While I will not comment now on Roland Emmerich’s views on religion, it may be of interest to note that although flooding is not supposed to be the cause, there are biblical and non-biblical prophecies that indicate that Rome will fall.

Some of Catholic predictions associated with this are included in the article Catholic Prophecies: Do They Mirror, Highlight, or Contradict Biblical Prophecies?

A more detailed and in-depth sequence, including how certain non-biblical predictions line up with biblical passages, is available in my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect.

BTW, we just got the printed copies of my book in Spanish this week and it is available at 2012 y el surgimiento de la secta secreta.

Some Anglicans Starting to Accept Pope’s Offer of Unification

Some Anglicans are accepting the Vatican’s offer of unity:

Anglican Province Accepts Pope’s Offer

Posted by EDWARD PENTIN

The Traditional Anglican Communion’s province in Great Britain has become the first to accept Pope Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Constitution for Anglicans.

All its members voted unanimously to come into communion with Rome under the terms of the new provision, which allows them to retain their Anglican patrimony.

An undated statement on the province’s website reads:

“That this Assembly, representing the Traditional Anglican Communion in Great Britain, offers its joyful thanks to Pope Benedict XVI for his forthcoming Apostolic Constitution allowing the corporate reunion of Anglicans with the Holy See, and requests the Primate and College of Bishops of the Traditional Anglican Communion to take the steps necessary to implement this Constitution.”

A statement from Bishop David Moyer of the Traditional Anglican Communion reads:

“The well-attended Assembly was a grace-filled gathering where all in attendance became aware of the movement of the Holy Spirit. The bishops, priests, ordinands, and lay representatives were brought to a place of “being in full accord and of one mind,” as St. Paul prayed for the Church in Philippi.

“The questions and concerns that were expressed in regard to what had been read and heard about the forthcoming Apostolic Constitution were addressed by Archbishop John Hepworth. Bishop Mercer and myself.

“The Resolutions unanimously passed by the Assembly were carefully written and clearly reflect TTAC’s corporate desire and intention. All present realized that the requirement for the days ahead is patience, charity, and openness to the Holy Spirit.”

Significantly, this vote took place in the birthplace of the Anglican Communion, and its members voted in favor despite the Apostolic Constitution having not yet been published.

Recently, the Traditional Anglican Communion has been looking at establishing a mother house in England, possibly a former monastery which hasn’t witnessed the ordination of a Catholic priest since the Reformation. http://www.ncregister.com/daily/anglican_province_accepts_popes_offer/#When:17:46:13Z

How many Anglicans, overall, will accept the offer is still unknown.  Some will, and others will not.

Now this offer included a little compromising on Rome’s part.  For example, the Vatican is allowing the Anglicans to keep much of their liturgy and their leadership.  And while there always has been an order within eastern Catholicism that allowed married priests, this has not been the case in the Latin (church of Rome in the west) for many centuries.  Of course, early Christian leaders (including bishops) were often married, as the Bible endorses that (1 Timothy 3:2).  But Rome has tended to change from some of those practices.

This unification is an indication to me, at least, that compromise on the behalf of the Vatican will likely be involved as other groups (the Orthodox and Lutherans come to immediate mind) get closer with the Church of Rome.

Some articles of possibly related interest include the following:

Why Should American Catholics Should Fear Unity with the Orthodox? Are the current ecumenical meetings a good thing or will they result in disaster?
Was Celibacy Required for Early Bishops or Presbyters? Some religions suggest this, but what does the Bible teach? What was the practice of the early church?
Did the Early Christian Church Practice Monasticism? Does God expect or endorse living in a monastery or nunnery?
Were the Early Duties of Elders/Pastors Mainly Sacramental? What was there Dress? Were the duties of the clergy primarily pastoral or sacramental? Did the clergy dress with special liturgical vestments? Can “bishops” be disqualified as ministers of Christ based on their head coverings?
The History of Early Christianity Are you aware that what most people believe is not what truly happened to the true Christian church? Do you know where the early church was based? Do you know what were the doctrines of the early church? Is your faith really based upon the truth or compromise?

Sanhedrin Threatens God’s Judgment Upon the United Nations

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Jerusalem

COGwriter

In a move that seems to be a first, the Sanhedrin has indicated that God’s judgment is going to come upon the United Nations if it has a particular type of debate this Wednesday:

Sanhedrin to UN: Goldstone Will Bring Judgment Upon You
Israel National News – Nov 2, 2009
The Sanhedrin has warned the UN General Assembly not to hold a plenum debate this Wednesday on the anti-Israel Goldstone Report. In a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and the UN’s member states, the Sanhedrin warns that continued consideration of what it calls the “hostile, fallacious, and malicious” Goldstone document will bring upon the world the catastrophic events described in the Bible’s Book of Joel, Chapter 4.
The Goldstone commission found Israel guilty of committing war crimes during its anti-terror Cast Lead offensive in Gaza early this year. Many in Israel feel that the commission’s purpose was to categorize Israel’s attempt to fight the same terrorist threat that threatens the entire world as “war crimes.” The Sanhedrin is an initiative of recent years to recreate the traditional supreme legal tribunal in Judaism.

The letter reminds the UN that when it was decided in Geneva two weeks ago to have its Security Council discuss and approve the Goldstone Report, “we sent you a copy of the injunction issued by the Sanhedrin’s Court that prohibits any of the UN institutions from deliberating on this matter.”

The Sanhedrin then explained by what authority it issues injunctions to the United Nations: “The International Court of the Sanhedrin operates by the power of the Bible, the only Holy Writ whose essence was handed over to mankind at Mt. Sinai [the Torah], and of the Prophets, sent to all nations of the world and universally held in respect by them. By virtue of this delegated authority, passed down from one generation to the next ever since the time of Moses our teacher, the master of all of prophets, and by virtue of the succession of authority in Jewish tradition, we appealed to you that you might not fail and thus fail the world, bringing upon it catastrophe.”

The letter states that the Goldstone Report is an “attack on the State of Israel, and thus an attack on the Jewish People, in order to try to remove it from the stage of history by an unprecedented shedding of blood – tacitly encouraging Iran and those like it to continue to develop weapons of mass destruction while the rest of the world sits by and looks on… We are convinced that the continued discussion of this report, which is lacking all moral basis, will lead the nations of the world, and all of mankind, to the judgment that will take place in Jerusalem in the Valley of Jehoshafat, as written in the Prophets and Torah of Israel.”

Joel 4 is then cited:

“I will gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshafat; and I will enter into judgment with them there for My people and for My heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and divided My land… And the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem you have sold to the children of the Jevanim, in order to distance them from their border.  Behold I will arouse them from the place where you sold them, and I will return your retribution upon your head. And I will sell your sons and daughters into the hands of the children of Judah… Announce this among the nations: Prepare war, arouse the mighty men… Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears… Gather and come, all you nations from around – and they shall gather; there the Lord shall break your mighty men… for their evil is great…

“And the Lord shall roar from Zion, and from Jerusalem He shall give forth His voice, and the heavens and earth shall quake, and the Lord is a shelter to His people and a stronghold for the children of Israel. And you shall know that I, the Lord your God, dwell in Zion, My holy mount, and Jerusalem shall be holy, and strangers shall no longer pass through there…. And Egypt shall become desolate, and Edom shall be a desert waste, because of the violence done to the children of Judah, because they shed innocent blood in their land. But Judah shall remain forever, and Jerusalem throughout all generations.”

The Sanhedrin suggests that instead of considering the one-sided report, “you should establish an investigative committee agreed upon by the Jewish people and the Government of Israel, to investigate the background to the outbreak of Operation Cast Lead and the UN’s contribution to its outbreak, together with additional factors… This could be your  blessed initiative, accepting uopn yourself and your organization the original spirit that formed its basis: to establish peace in the world acting for the King of the universe.”

The Sanhedrin concludes by advising that the verse from the Prophet Isaiah – “Let them beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks and they shall not learn war anymore”-  that is engraved on the United Nations wall “will never be realized via the Goldstone Report and the traditional policy of the UN regarding the State of Israel. [Instead,] your welcome action [as advised above] is anxiously awaited by all mankind. You have the power to help contribute to the prevention of wars.”

The letter is signed by Rabbi Dov Stein, Secretary of the Sanhedrin, and Rabbi Prof. Hillel Weiss, spokesman.

http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/134185

While God’s judgment (called “the day of the Lord” in scripture; see Can the Great Tribulation Begin in 2009, 2010, or 2011?) will come upon this world, linking Joel 4 to the debate is not something I would have done for three reasons.  They are that Joel only has 3 chapters, the above comes from chapter 3, and that I do not believe that the UN debate is really the subject of the passage.

The Sanhedrin is most known for its efforts to restore sacrifices and possibly rebuild the temple (see Temple In Jerusalem is Not Required For Sacrifices).

They are also mentioned in the following article:

Why is a Jewish Temple in Jerusalem Not Required? Although people like Timothy LaHaye  teach a third Jewish temple is required, who is ‘the temple of God” in the New Testament?  This new article goes over , in much more detail, the biblical reasons why a a third Jewish temple in Jerusalem is not necessary.

Vatican Condemns Halloween as Anti-Christian

Friday, October 30th, 2009

St. Peter’s Basilica

COGwriter

While we in the Living Church of God have always condemned Halloween as a pagan, non-Christian, holiday, the Vatican has been hesitant in the past to do so.  But now the Vatican is taking a position closer to LCG:

Vatican condemns Hallowe’en as anti-Christian
The Vatican has condemned Hallowe’en as anti-Christian, saying it is based on a sinister and dangerous “undercurrent of occultism”.
Telegraph - Oct 30, 2009

The Holy See has warned that parents should not allow their children to dress up as ghosts and ghouls on Saturday, calling Hallowe’en a pagan celebration of “terror, fear and death”.

The Roman Catholic Church has become alarmed in recent years by the spread of Hallowe’en traditions from the US to other countries around the world.

As in Britain, it is only in recent years that Italian children have dressed up in costumes, played trick or treat on their neighbours and made lanterns out of hollowed out pumpkins.

The Vatican issued the warning through its official newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, in an article headlined “Hallowe’en’s Dangerous Messages”.

The paper quoted a liturgical expert, Joan Maria Canals, who said: “Hallowe’en has an undercurrent of occultism and is absolutely anti-Christian.”

Parents should “be aware of this and try to direct the meaning of the feast towards wholesomeness and beauty rather than terror, fear and death,” said Father Canals, a member of a Spanish commission on church rites.

Last year a newspaper controlled by the Italian bishops, Avvenire, called for a boycott of Hallowe’en, calling it a “dangerous celebration of horror and the macabre” which could encourage “pitiless [Satanic] sects without scruples”.

Earlier this week the Catholic Church in Spain also condemned the growing popularity of Halloween….

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/religion/6467253/Vatican-condemns-Halloween-as-anti-Christian.html

It is good that religious leaders discourage those who profess Christ from observing pagan holidays.

Hopefully the announcement from the Vatican will dissuade Catholics from defending Halloween as a “Catholic holiday” as the following author did in the past:

It should be noted that Halloween is a Catholic holiday. Pope Gregory IV in 835 made it the universal practice in the Roman Catholic Church to celebrate All Saints’ Day on Nov. 1. All Souls’ Day follows the next day as the commemoration of all of the faithful who have departed.

“All Hallows’ Even” as the evening before All Hallows’ Day — All Saints’ Day – eventually became shortened to Halloween. Hallow, as in “hallowed be thy name” in the Lord’s Prayer, is an older form of the word “holy.”

It was the Protestant Reformation that rejected the universal practice of devotion to the dead (Martin Luther dropped any references to praying for the dead from his Bible). This Catholic holiday was attacked, much like the church as a whole, for being pagan and evil. Hence I wouldn’t be surprised if this cloud of suspicion hovering over Halloween originated from the spirit of anti-Catholicism.

But Nov. 1st was the day of the Celtic Summer’s End feast of Samhain, the day when the dead returned to the earth. We have retained some of these pagan elements to Halloween, as is true of Christmas and Easter.

Why would a pope put the Catholic celebration of the dead on top of the pagans’ celebrations of the dead? Because the Catholic feasts are in continuity and fulfill the meaning of the pagan ones…

So what about the indulgence in the spooky and scary? Skeletons are spooky, but they are also very Catholic. In fact, one couldn’t find a better haunted house for a Halloween pilgrimage than the various “chapel of bones” that can be found across Europe (Killian Brian. Halloween, as autumn celebration, reminder God’s name is hallowed. Catholic Online International News. 10/31/06. http://www.catholic.org/international/international_story.php?id=21818).

The reality is that Halloween is NOT a Christian holiday and should not be observed by those who claim Jesus Christ as Savior.

It is nice that the Vatican is starting to realize some of the dangers associated with holidays containing pagan practices.

Is Halloween Holy Time for Christians? This article provides some historical and biblical insight on this question.

The Vatican, the Anglicans, and the Celibacy Issue

Friday, October 30th, 2009

COGwriter

NCRegister.com (The National Catholic Register), which describes itself as “America’s ‘most complete’ Catholic newsweekly” reported yesterday:

Celibacy Issue Holds Up Apostolic Constitution

by EDWARD PENTIN

The delay in publishing the apostolic constitution, which will allow large numbers of Anglicans to be received into the Catholic Church, is due not so much to translation problems as the more weighty issue of priestly celibacy.

According to two reliably informed Italian newspapers, Il Giornale and Il Foglio, canon lawyers are continuing to define what has been a particularly unclear aspect of the new provision: whether married Anglicans could train as seminarians.

Andrea Tornielli of Il Giornale reports that over the last few days, the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts has been working to clarify this point. He writes that “everything suggests” seminarians in these future Anglo-Catholic communities “will have to be celibate like all their colleagues in the Latin Catholic Church.”  http://www.ncregister.com/daily/celibacy_issue_holds_up_apostilic_constitution/#When:11:39:45Z

Is it true that “everything suggests” celibacy for the clergy?

No, not everything.

Andrea Tornielli seems not to remember is that early Christian leaders, including the original apostles, including Peter (Matthew 8:14) were almost all married.

Furthermore, the Bible indicates that bishops and elders were supposed to have a wife and children to demonstrate they could handle a church as Paul wrote (Roman Catholic approved Rheims New Testament):

1.FAITHFUL saying. If a man desire a Bishops office, he desireth a good work.
2. It behoveth therefore a Bishop to be irreprehensible, the husband of one wife,
sober, wise, comely, chaste, a man of hospitality, a teacher,
3. Not given to wine, no fighter, but modest, no quarreler, not covetous,
4. Well ruling his own house, chaving his children subject with all charity.
5. But if a man know not to rule his own house: how shall he have care of the Church of God? (1 Timothy 3:1-5).

5. For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest reform the things that are wanting, and shouldst ordain priests by cities, as I also appointed thee:
6. If any be without crime, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not in the accusations of riot, or not obedient.
7. For a Bishop must be without crime, as the steward of God: not proud, not angry, nor given to wine, no striker, nor covetous of filthy lucre (Titus 1:5-7).

Now that the term translated as priest in verse 4, presbyter, simply means elder. Also notice that the Bishop is also allowed to be married. In Eastern Orthodox circles, while their priests are allowed to be married, their bishops are not.

Even The Catholic Encyclopedia acknowledges that from the beginning, celibacy was not a requirement for church leaders:

Turning now to the historical development of the present law of celibacy, we must necessarily begin with St. Paul’s direction (1 Timothy 3:2, 12, and Titus 1:6) that a bishop or a deacon should be “the husband of one wife”. These passages seem fatal to any contention that celibacy was made obligatory upon the clergy from the beginning (Thurston H. Transcribed by Christine J. Murray. Celibacy of the Clergy. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume III. Copyright © 1908 by Robert Appleton Company. Online Edition Copyright © 2003 by K. Knight. Nihil Obstat, November 1, 1908. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York).

Celibacy became an ideal for the clergy in the East gradually, as it did in the West. In the fourth century we still find St. Gregory Nazianzen’s father, who was Bishop of Nanzianzos, living with his wife, without scandal. But very soon after that the present Eastern rule obtained. It is less strict than in the West. No one can marry after he has been ordained priest (Paphnutius at the first Council of Nicaea maintains this; the first Canon of the Synod of Neocaesarea in 314 or 325, and Can. Apost., xxvi. The Synod of Elvira about 300 had decreed absolute celibacy for all clerks in the West, Can. xxxiii, ib., pp. 238-239); priests already married may keep their wives (the same law applied to deacons and subdeacons: Can. vi of the Synod in Trullo, 692), but bishops must be celibate. As nearly all secular priests were married this meant that, as a general rule, bishops were chosen from the monasteries, and so these became, as they still are, the road through advancement may be attained (Fortesque A. Transcribed by Marie Jutras. Eastern Monasticism. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume X. Copyright © 1911 by Robert Appleton Company. Online Edition Copyright © 2003 by K. Knight. Nihil Obstat, October 1, 1911. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York).

Thus, the celibacy requirement for clergy did not occur until the fourth century.

When the subject came up in the fourth century, a Greco-Roman bishop denounced it:

Paphnutius then was bishop of one of the cities in Upper Thebes: he was a man of such eminent piety, that extraordinary miraclas were done by him. In the time of the persecution he had been deprived of one of his eyes. The emperor honoured this man exceedingly, and often sent for him to the palace, and kissed the part where the eye had been torn out. So devout was the emperor Constantine. Having noticed this circumstance respecting Paphnutius, I shall explain. another thing which was wisely ordered in consequence of his advice, both for the good of the church and the honour of the clergy. It seemed fit to the bishops to introduce a new law into the church, that those who were in holy orders, I speak of bishops, presbyters, and deacons, should have no conjugal intercourse with the wives which they had married prior to their ordination. And when it was proposed to deliberate on this matter, Paphnutius having arisen in the midst of the assembly of bishops, earnestly entreated them not to impose so heavy a yoke on the ministers of religion: asserting that ” marriage is honourable among all, and the nuptial bed undefiled;” so that they ought not to injure the church by too stringent restrictions. ” For all men,” said he, ” cannot bear the practice of rigid continence ; neither perhaps would the chastity of each of their wives be preserved.” He termed the intercourse of a man with his lawful wife chastity. It would be sufficient, he thought, that such as had previously entered on their sacred calling should abjure matrimony, according to the ancient tradition of the church: but that none should be separated from her to whom, while yet unordained, he had been legally united…The whole assembly of the clergy assented to the reasoning of Paphnutius (Socrates Scholasticus.  Book 1, Chapter XI. A History of the Church in Seven Books: From the Accession of Constantine, A.D. 305, to the 38th Year of Theodosius II, Inluding a Period of 140 Years. Published by S. Bagster, 1844.  Original from Harvard University, pp. 53-54)

So as late as the early fourth century, the idea of required celibacy was opposed by most of the clergy.

In the 21st century, the Church of Rome has admitted that celibacy was not the original position of the Apostles and that it might change back:

Pope Benedict XVI’s choice as the church’s top official for priests has said that celibacy “is not a dogma,” and that the Catholic church “can reflect” on the subject.

The explosive character of the issue, however, was reflected in a “clarification” issued in the name of the cardinal by the Vatican Press Office Dec. 4.

Cardinal Claudio Hummes, 72, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, was nominated prefect of the Congregation for Clergy Oct. 31. He made the comments as he left for Rome in an interview with the Brazilian publication Estado de Sao Paulo.

“Even if celibates are part of our history and of Catholic culture, the church can reflect on the question of celibacy, because it’s not a dogma but a disciplinary norm,” Hummes said.

Hummes, a Franciscan, recalled that several apostles were married, and that the discipline of priestly celibacy in the Western church developed several centuries after the institution of the priesthood itself…”In the church, it has always been clear that the obligation of celibacy for priests is not a dogma, but a disciplinary norm. It is also clear that this is true for the Latin church, but not for the Oriental rites, where it is normal that priests are married in the communities in union with the Catholic church…” (Allen JL. Curial cardinal says celibacy can be discussed. National Catholic Reporter, Dec 15, 2006).

So, if the Vatican allows current and future priests of Anglican backgrounds to be married, it does have reason to allow it.

Whether or not the Vatican will allow those who wish to be in the clergy in the future to be married is, however, an open question.

Pope Calls for Solidarity in a Letter to Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople

Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople

COGwriter

In a letter just reported by Zenit, Pope Benedict XVI is calling for solidarity:

Pope Calls for Solidarity With the Future…

VATICAN CITY, OCT. 22, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI made a call for “intergenerational justice” and actions of solidarity with the world’s future generations, as they are also entitled to enjoy the beauty of creation.

The Pope stated this in a letter he sent to Orthodox patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I on the occasion of the Eighth International Symposium on Religion, Science and the Environment titled “Restoring Balance: The Great Mississippi River.”

The symposium, organized under the patronage of Bartholomew I, is under way through Sunday in Memphis, Tennessee.

In his note, the Pontiff expressed his appreciation for the patriarch’s “continued efforts to promote respect for God’s gift of creation and a sense of global solidarity for its wise and responsible stewardship.”

While the idea of solidarity amongst the Greco-Roman churches is not new, it is interesting in light of the fact that the deal for many Anglicans and Episcopals to become in solidarity with the Vatican was reported on Tuesday of this week (see Vatican Announced Plan for Anglicans to Become Part of the Church of Rome).

It remains my position that the leadership of the Eastern Orthodox “sees” will likely make a deal to reconcile with Rome (probably after some type of ecumenical council).  I also believe that the Lutherans and certain other “mainstream” Protestant denominations will, to a degree, become back into fellowship with Rome.

However, as the Vatican announcement about the Anglicans hinted, Rome will make certain changes for some of these “mergers” to occur.  Changes that ultimately will prove fatal to the Church of Rome.

Some articles of possibly related interest may include:

Hope of Salvation: How the Living Church of God differ from most Protestants How the Living Church of God differs from mainstream/traditional Protestants, is perhaps the question I am asked most by those without a Church of God background.
The Similarities and Dissimilarities between Martin Luther and Herbert W. Armstrong This article clearly shows some of the doctrinal differences between in the two. At this time of doctrinal variety and a tendency by many to accept certain aspects of Protestantism, the article should help clarify why the Living Church of God is NOT Protestant. Do you really know what the Protestant Reformer Martin Luther taught and should you follow his doctrinal example?

Vatican Announced Plan for Anglicans to Become Part of the Church of Rome

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

St. Peter’s Basilica

COGwriter

The Vatican announced today that it has a plan for accepting dissatisfied Anglicans back in the Church of Rome:

Vatican welcomes Anglicans into Catholic church
CNN - Oct 20, 2009
ROME, Italy (CNN) — The Vatican said Tuesday it has worked out a way for groups of Anglicans who are dissatisfied with their faith to join the Catholic Church.

The process will allow groups of Anglicans, including bishops and married priests, to join the Catholic Church some 450 years after King Henry VIII broke from Rome and created the Church of England.

The number of Anglicans wishing to join the Catholic Church has increased in recent years as the Anglican church has welcomed the ordination of women and openly gay clergy and blessed homosexual partnerships, said Cardinal William Joseph Levada, the head of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Their talks with the Vatican recently began speeding up, Vatican officials said, leading to Tuesday’s announcement.

“The Catholic Church is responding to the many requests that have been submitted to the Holy See from groups of Anglican clergy and faithful in different parts of the world who wish to enter into full visible communion,” Levada said.

Levada said “hundreds” of Anglicans around the world have expressed their desire to join the Catholic Church. Among them are 50 Anglican bishops, said Archbishop Joseph Augustine Di Noia of the Congregation for Divine Worship.

The Anglicans will be able to retain their Anglican rites while recognizing the pope as their leader, Vatican officials said. The British monarch is the head of the Anglican Church.

While married Anglican priests may be ordained as Catholic priests, the same does not apply to married Anglican bishops, Levada said.

“We’ve been praying for this unity for 40 years and we’ve not anticipated it happening now,” Di Noia said. “The Holy Spirit is at work here.”

The Church of England said the move ends a “period of uncertainty” for Anglican groups who wanted more unity with the Catholic Church.

Both groups have a “substantial overlap in faith, doctrine and spirituality” and will continue to hold official dialogues, the archbishops of Canterbury and Westminster said in a joint statement.

“Those Anglicans who have approached the Holy See have made clear their desire for full, visible unity in the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church,” Levada said. “At the same time, they have told us of the importance of their Anglican traditions of spirituality and worship for their faith journey.”

Preserving Anglican traditions, such as mass rites, adds to the diversity of the Catholic Church, he said.

“The unity of the church does not require a uniformity that ignores cultural diversity, as the history of Christianity shows,” he said. “Moreover, the many diverse traditions present in the Catholic Church today are all rooted in the principle articulated by St. Paul in his letter to the Ephesians: ‘There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism.’”

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe/10/20/vatican.anglican.church/

Catholic prophecies tell of a time when “Protestantism will cease”.  Today’s announcement is a step towards that direction.

The fact that married priests apparently will be allowed may make it easier for the expected re-unification with the Eastern Orthodox Church, which will likely happen next decade.

However, as I have reported here in the past, I believe that those who are in the Church of Rome as well as those who are Eastern Orthodox or Protestant should individually heed Bible prophecies and NOT engage in the compromise necessary for such mergers.

Some articles of possibly related interest may include:

Why Should American Catholics Should Fear Unity with the Orthodox? Are the current ecumenical meetings a good thing or will they result in disaster?
Orthodox Must Reject Unity with the Roman Catholics The talks for unification involve compromise and the apparent rising up of a changed religion that no one should accept.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — If European unity is based only on geography and economics, it cannot succeed in promoting the common good of all Europe’s citizens and in helping the rest of the world, Pope Benedict XVI said. The recognition of the dignity of the human person and the obligation to work for the common good — values Christianity fostered on the continent — are what inspired the movement toward European unity and are the only guarantee of its success, the pope said Oct. 19 in welcoming Yves Gazzo as the new head of the European Commission’s delegation to the Holy See.Gazzo defined the European Union as a “zone of peace and stability which comprises 27 states with the same core values.”

Pope Benedict said the European Union did not bring those values to the 27 member countries, “but rather it is these shared values that have given birth to and were like a gravitational force” that drew the countries together and inspired them to form a union.

“When the church recalls the Christian roots of Europe, it is not seeking a special status for itself,” the pope said. Instead, it is calling Europeans to remember that the values that brought peace to the continent and freedom and dignity to its people must be allowed to continue nourishing it.

“The immense intellectual, cultural and economic resources of the continent will continue to bear fruit as long as they are fertilized by the transcendent vision of the human person, which is the most important treasure of European heritage,” he said.

The European Union is right to promote a better economic situation and improved social conditions for all the continent’s people, the pope said, but the values shared by most Europeans have a broader scope.

Joint efforts are needed to safeguard the environment and, especially, to give “the vital and necessary support to human life from conception to natural death and to the family founded on marriage between one man and one woman,” he said.

“Europe will not truly be herself if she cannot keep the originality that made her great,” the pope said. He encouraged the continent to promote the “holistic development of people that the Catholic Church considers to be the only way to remedy the imbalances present in our world.

This is not a surprise as the Vatican has long been pushing for some reference to Christianity in any European “constitution”.

But Bible prophecy indicates that the rising European Beast power will have a religious element, and probably one that calls itself  “Catholic”.  And that this is not going to be good.

Catholics Should Fear Unity With The Orthodox

Monday, October 12th, 2009

COGwriter leaving the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople ’s Administrative Building May 2008

COGwriter

Pope Benedict XVI seems to be determined to have unity with the Eastern Orthodox.

But at what cost?

When I was in Istanbul in May 2008, I was specifically told by a representative of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople that when Pope Benedict XVI visited there, a papal representative of Benedict XVI told the Patriarch (Bartholomew I) that Rome would change all doctrines necessary to attain full unity with the Orthodox, if the Orthodox would accept papal authority.  And this definitely included changing Rome’s position on the doctrines such as the Filioque clause (a clause which contains a biblically supportable position).

Hence, those associated with the Church of Rome need to understand that this means that the Vatican’s current (and likely future) leadership is willing to compromise on something that it has long held as being of “great dogmatic and historical importance.”

Since Vatican II (a major Catholic ecumenical council that ran from 1962–1965), many Catholics have been justifiably concerned that doctrinal compromise for the sake of ecumenical unity with those outside of fellowship of Rome was inevitable.

The Orthodox have long taught that the Church of Rome (known sometimes as Latins) will change doctrines to those of the Orthodox.  A document known as the Anonymou Prophecy of 1053 refers to this as the:

“Deferring of the Latins to the error-free faith of the Orthodox”…

It then claims:

“The Orthodox Faith will expand from East to West” (Tzima Otto, p. 116).

Here is an explanation from Orthodox scholar H. Tzima-Otto (bolding in original):

Many Catholic prophecies speak of the victory of the ‘true Catholic faith’, while Orthodox prophecies, although they agree on everything else, predict a victory of the ‘true Orthodox faith’…When we speak of the future Council, it is bound to be ecumenical…there will come a true re-unification of the Christian Churches…This Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church is not going to be Roman Catholic as understood today…

The error-free Orthodox faith…The Orthodox did not experience a Vatican II, they did not begin to rewrite Scriptures…Hence, error-free in the sense that it has not been contaminated by satan…(Tzima Otto, pp. 120-122)

Thus, the Orthodox expect Rome to change its doctrines, because they feel that the Roman Catholic Church adopted errors from satan.

Lest any think that Dr. Tzima-Otto is simply a rogue Orthodox scholar, it perhaps should be pointed out that the Orthodox, who generally make less pronouncements than the Vatican tends to, condemned the papacy as a major heresy in an encyclical in 1848:

4. Of these heresies widely-diffused was formerly Arianism, and now is the Papacy, which, though still flourishing, shall, like the former, pass away and be cast down, and a great voice from Heaven shall cry, ‘ It is cast down.’—Rev. xii. 10…Encyclical Letter of the Eastern Orthodox, 1848. As cited in The Benares magazine, No. 31, 1851.  W.H. Haycock, 1851. Original from Oxford University Digitized, Nov 24, 2006, pp. 370-371,373)

Perhaps it should be mentioned that “Rev. xii. 10″ teaches about the “accuser of the brethren” (a reference to Satan in verse 9) being cast down. Thus the Orthodox officially seem to have condemned the papacy as Satan the devil.

Notice that according to another Byzantine prophet, the final (the Orthodox recognize seven previous ones) ecumenical council satisfies what “heretics” want:

Saint Nelios the Myrrh-Gusher (died 1592): During that time the Eighth and last Ecumenical Synod will take place, which will satisfy the contentions of the heretics…(Tzima Otto, p. 111).

By satisfying “heretics”, clearly this council compromises and changes the religion, which will be called “Catholic”.  If heretics are truly heretics, should their complaints be satisfied?

A Catholic prophecy shows that after its church is changed (reformed below), the Orthodox will come back:

Roger Bacon (died 1294): There shall arise a…priest to reform the Church.  The Greeks will return (to the Church)…there will be one fold, one shepherd (Culleton, The Prophets and Our Times, p. 149).

Furthermore, it appears that other Catholic writings suggest that it is an antipope who is involved in the imposition of a changed church:

Oba Prophecy: It will come when the Church authorities issue directives to support a new cult, when priests are forbidden to celebrate in any other, when the highest positions in the Church are given to perjurers and hypocrites, when only the renegades are admitted to occupy those positions.

Nun Anna-Katarina Emmerick (19th century): I saw again a new and odd-looking Church which they were trying to build. There was nothing holy about it…

Yves Dupont (writer interpreting A. Emmerick above), They wanted to make a new Church, a Church of human manufacture, but God had other designs…The Holy Father shall have to leave Rome, and he shall die a cruel death. An anti-pope shall be set up in Rome. (Dupont, Yves. Catholic Prophecy: The Coming Chastisement. TAN Books, Rockford (IL), 1973, pp. 115,116).

Priest O’Connor (20th century?): This final false prophet will be a bishop of the church and will lead all religions into becoming one. (The False Prophet.  Living in the Final Generation. http://www.geocities.com/rebornempowered/ApparitionsofMary.htm 10/12/07)

Priest H. Kramer (20th century): In the vision of the Seer now appears a second beast rising out of the earth, having two horns like a lamb but speaking like a dragon…In other places he is called the false prophet…This prophet may re-establish the pagan Roman Empire and build the “Great Harlot”, Babylon… The False Prophet…will persuade all infidels, apostates and apostate nations to worship and adore him…Antichrist ”sitteth in the temple of God” (I Thes. II. 4). This is not the ancient Temple in Jerusalem…this temple is shown to be a Catholic Church…The False Prophet will proclaim the resurrection of the Roman Empire. (Kramer H., p. 318,320-323)

All (Catholic or otherwise) should be careful, compare their teachings with the Bible, pray to God, and not accept doctrines that are unbiblical for the sake of this coming ecumenical unity.

Thus, Catholics indicate that a new type of “Catholicism” will be false to that religion. This also seems to be consistent with an Orthodox understanding of the last false religious power coming from Rome:

Bishop Gerasimos of Abydos (20th century): The army of Antichrist is made up of the worldly powers, mainly the Roman Empire, symbolized by the two beasts and the harlot woman (Rev. 11:7; 13:1-17; cf. Dan. 7:11-12)… The final confrontation with evil is presented in chapters 19 and 20…The war is waged by the beast and the false prophet. Both of these are organs of Satan, representing the political and religious authority of Rome (Rev. 13:1-18). (Gerasimos, Bishop. At the End of Time: The Eschatological Expectations of the Church. Holy Cross Orthodox Press. October 5, 2004, pp. 28-29).

To learn more specifically why American Catholics should be concerned, there is a new article on this subject is available below:

Sony, 2012, and a Flood

Last Page of Mayan Dresden Codex
Dresden Codex Picturing a Flood

COGwriter

This month, Sony Films took great efforts to popularize its upcoming 2012 movie.  So, most Americans have heard of it (the movie is also planned to be released in Europe and elsewhere and in multiple languages).

I reviewed 2012 the Movie (by Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company) preview and also the trailer for it a few times. Thus far, it seems to perpetuate the non-biblical position that the world will be destroyed by a flood (cf. Genesis 9:11-17) in 2012. The trailer also has the following statements:

HOW WOULD THE GOVERNMENTS OF OUR PLANET PREPARE SIX BILLION PEOPLE FOR THE END OF THE WORLD?

THEY WOULDN’T

2012

FIND OUT THE TRUTH

Despite claims, Mayan writings (like the Dresden Codex shown at the beginning of today’s article), movie trailers, and movie reviews, the truth is that world will not end in 2012. (Though massive flooding, which Sony’s movie implies, is likely to occur just a few years later.)

It is simply not possible according to the Bible for this to happen in 2012 (please also see Does God Have a 6,000 Year Plan? What Year Does the 6,000 Years End?). Those who think it will, simply have been misled. And those looking for a place of protection, may wish to consult the Bible and not Patrick Geryl (for biblical information, please see the article There is a Place of Safety for the Philadelphians. Why it May Be Petra) nor Hollywood.

The Bible also teaches:

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Wallace Smith of the Living Church of God reported the following after seeing a preview for the movie:

As my wife and I walked into the local cinema, before us stood one of the largest movie advertisement displays I’ve ever seen.  It depicted a coastal city being completely ripped apart by unprecedented seismic activity—tossing vast swaths of the city into the sky and dumping entire neighborhoods into a hungry ocean.  It was a scene of utter devastation that clearly would have taken the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.  And it was a fitting advertisement for the movie 2012, the new End-Of-The-World epic written and directed by Roland Emmerich, coming out this November. (Smith W. 2012: The Hype and the Truth. LCG Commentary, July 18, 2009)

Those who are convinced by Mayan and other non-biblical prophecies otherwise are not correct and simply are not being directed by God–they are leaning on their own inaccurate misunderstandings. But the end of the world (meaning the end of this age) will come soon–but it will not be until after 2012 for reasons that this article will indicate later.

A poster for Sony Picture’s  2012 movie stated the following:

Who Will Be Left Behind?

2012

This is apparently intended to be a twist on Tim LaHaye’s and Jim Jenkins’ Left Behind series of books.  Sony’s approach appears to be that most will be destroyed by a flood and only a few will be “left behind” to live.    The Left Behind series promotes the idea that “Christians” will be gone via a pre-tribulation “rapture” before the Great Tribulation and that those doomed to live under the reign of Antichrist will be “left behind”

Both ideas are in scriptural error.

But Sony has taken this a step further.  Notice what Wikipedia has written about one publicity stunt from Sony:

The studio also launched a viral marketing website operated by the fictional Institute for Human Continuity, where filmgoers could register for a lottery number to be part of a small population that would be rescued from the global destruction.

Sony Films’ registration, of course, will not save anybody.

Those truly interested in learning about the rapture hypothesis and who really will be protected during the coming Great Tribulation should study the article Is There A Secret Rapture for the Church? When and Where is the Church Protected?

And, it may be important to realize that the Bible does show that some type of flooding will occur and eliminate most of the islands of the world (please see Islands and Bible Prophecy), but I do not believe that this can occur until some years after December 21, 2012.  Nor does the Bible allow for a worldwide destruction of all flesh through a flood:

8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying: 9 “And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth. 11 Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” (Genesis 9:8-11).

However, since the world cannot and will not be destroyed by a flood, I strongly suspect that many will decide that the Mayan prophecies should properly be interpreted to mean that the longed for age of peace is upon us–even though it will not be (Ezekiel 13:10).  Perhaps I should mention that the most specific Mayan prophecy about a flood at the end of the world ties it into the Bible–hence there would seem to be a contradiction there as the Bible is clear that there will not be another flood such as Noah experienced (Genesis 9:11-15), and while the movie does not go quite to that degree, what it shows simply will not happen then.  Other scriptures show that the Great Tribulation and the later great earthquake (Revelation 16:18) will not be that early (see Can the Great Tribulation Begin in 2009, 2010, or 2011? for more details).
