Supreme Court Protects ‘Right to Lie’

COGwriter

Various decisions of the US Supreme Court were released today and yesterday.  The following may be the most morally disturbing (and that does not mean that others are not morally disturbing as well):

28 June 2012

Los Angeles Times – ‎The US Supreme Court on Thursday struck down the Stolen Valor Act, which made it a crime to lie about receiving military medals. By a 6-3 decision, the high court said the right to lie about medals and military service, while unattractive, is protected by the 1st Amendment.

The Supreme Court struck down a law Thursday that made it a crime to lie about being a military hero. In a 6-3 decision, the court said that lying about military valor doesn’t amount to stealing, as supporters of the law had said.

This is terrible.  The Court’s position seems to be that unless you are lying to the government (police or in court), that lying is something you are protected to do–what about the protection of employers, friends, etc. not be be lied to?

The Bible condemns lying; here is one such condemnation:

8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. (Revelation 21:8)

Jesus told some of the rulers (Pharisees, John 8:13) and others of His day:

44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God. (John 8:44-47)

Jesus condemned lying, as well as not believing someone who is telling the truth.  The Bible discusses the deceptiveness of thieves (1 Thessalonians 5:4; John 10:1-10).

The Bible also warns:

1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! (2 Timothy 3:1-6)

Sadly, most justices in the Supreme Court of the USA are having trouble even wishing to go against lying and false boasts. This is just another indication as to how far the USA is sliding down morally.

The New Testament clearly teaches:

48 For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required (Luke 12:48).

The U.S.A. justices have a lot of education and should at least realize that truth is important. Jesus says more will be required of such people (cf. John 9:41).

On other matters, the Supreme Court also upheld most of the Obamacare law in a decision released today.  Also, the following headline, that came out yesterday, was interesting:

Supreme Court pretends that money can’t corrupt politicians‎ Youngstown Vindicator

While I do not wish to comment on the above or Obamacare decisions here at this time, the “right to lie” provision that US Supreme Court apparently upholds is clearly different than that which the Bible advocates.
