Obama pushing trade deals: might this tip the balance towards Europe?

The European Union and USA have been engaged in trade talks for some time. The USA has also been working on another trade deal involving Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Canada. US President Barack Obama would like to finalize these deals:

U.S. President Barack Obama has promoted the value of free- trade deals to the U.S. public, saying they will make American businesses more successful and competitive in a 21st century economy.

In his weekly address Saturday, Obama said past trade deals have not always lived up to the promise of “leveling the playing field” for American workers and holding all countries to the high labor and environmental standards the U.S. abides by.

But he said that does not mean the U.S. should close itself off from new opportunities and remain idle while other countries determine its economic fate.

The president said the U.S. should “seize” those opportunities, saying they will create “good new jobs for decades to come.”

Obama urged the U.S. Congress to act on “trade promotion authority.” He said that is bipartisan legislation that will protect American workers and promote American businesses with strong new trade deals from Asia to Europe that are free and fair. http://www.voanews.com/content/obama-new-free-trade-deals-will-create-more-jobs/2653098.html

Barack Obama is correct that past trade deals have not always lived up to the promise of “leveling the playing field” for American workers. But politicians always say that they will.

One of the deals the US President wants is called the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP):

The Trans Pacific Partnership is the biggest free trade agreement hardly anyone’s ever heard of. Bubbling along below the radar for half a decade, it’s about to become solid. It is set to deliver much more money and power to US pharmaceutical companies, to criminalise the use of technology in ways that presently don’t attract jail time and to set up outside tribunals to reconsider decisions already made by Australian courts.

Taking part is almost 40 per cent of the world’s economy – the industrialised nations of Australia, Canada, Singapore, Brunei, New Zealand, Chile, Mexico, the United States and Japan and the less developed nations of Malaysia, Peru, and Vietnam. If China joins later (as expected) it’ll be nearly 50 per cent.

It has reached the point where Australia’s trade minister Andrew Robb is prepared to put a date on it. “I think it could be ready next month,” he says, before adding that there have been slippages before. Certain critics have claimed that the above deal will result in disaster and loss of sovereignty for the USA. I would simply state that the larger trade deals do, in a real sense, restrict sovereignty as the participants agree to abide by nor only the treaty, but legal interpreters of the treaty that are outside their national court systems.

But the trade deal I want to highlight prophetically is one specifically between the USA and Europe.

The deal between the USA and Europe is called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). TTIP could strengthen the economies of the European Union and the USA (for a time), while having the effect of reducing China’s growing influence to some degree. The agreements affects on international trade regulations is one that I believe may be quite important.

Now, I believe that trade agreements, in general, are going to give the European Union more power as far as regulatory control over trade than the USA. But that being said, there have been protests in parts of Europe against the TTIP, basically from those who believe that corporations will benefit at the expense of governments. Some protesters have called the TTIP a “trojan horse deal” and have used a wooden horse as a publicity prop to get some of their message across. It has been reported that the new government in Greece will not ratify TTIP (although I suspect it might use that as a bargaining chip to get funds and/or renegotiate aspects of its debt).

Irrespective of warnings and protests, the Bible tells of a time when a Babylonian European Beast power will control buying and selling and dominate world trade:

16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666. (Revelation 13:16-18)

19 Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! (Revelation 18:19)

The Bible shows that this will make some in the world wealthy (cf. Revelation 18; Ezekiel 27:12-16). But prophecy seems to suggest that the Europeans will have set a lot of the rules and that is what TTIP seems to be intended to do.

Could TTIP be a prelude to Revelation 13:16-18?

It seems like it very well may be (although the name of it could be changed to assuage public protest).

Economically, the USA is no longer going to be the head, but the tail (cf. Deuteronomy 28:13,44). This new world order will result in the Europeans being on top (but only for a while).

The USA is relatively soon going to find itself in a position that it is more tied to the EU than its citizens want and this will make things difficult for leaders in the USA to be able to deal with the military threat that is starting to rise up in Europe. This combined with the fact that the USA has basically agreed to release most of its espionage tactics and details to the EU and has basically pledged to do less spying on the EU is putting the USA in a position that it will ultimately be able to be taken over by the EU. The Bible is clear that the nation with the strongest fortresses (strongest military) will be taken over by the final European King of the North.

For at least two decades, I have believed that a split would happen between the USA and the Europeans partially because of how the Europeans will view how the USA handles/mishandles bilateral trade issues (there are also other factors like USA debt, GMOs, etc.). The Europeans are still very hurt over USA espionage and I believe they will not ever truly get over it–they will make trade deals, but they will no longer trust the USA as they once did. Since the USA has basically stated that the continental Europeans are NOT close friends, this will not be lost on the leaders in Europe (see also The Snowden Leaks are Leading to the Destruction of the USA).

As far as loss of USA sovereignty goes, I have long warned that the Europeans will insist on setting a lot of international standards which they already have and this will be a negative for the USA as it is less the nation that leads, but is now becoming more one that follows. Having the USA accept more European standards will also increase the world’s acceptance of European standards. This increase acceptance of European standards is something that very well could come from the current trade talks. Some courts in the USA have indicated that they are willing to accept international standards, even if they seem to conflict with the Constitution of the USA (see US Justice Department allegedly claiming that international treaties surpass US Constitution).

In general, trade agreements benefit both parties involved. Yet as I warned about the current trade talks in the past, ultimately, the deal with the EU will not be good for the United States of America nor the British (nor their Anglo-Saxon dominated allies like Canada, Australia, or New Zealand).

I suspect that there will be a few areas of major disagreement that will happen in such a trade deal, and that to hide their disappointment, some representing end-time Europe will declare that all is basically fine before they end up taking over the USA, which is prophesied in such scriptures as Daniel 11:39, 8:24-25, etc. The results are more than the loss of normal sovereignty–the USA will be no more.

This does not mean that there are no short-term economic benefits for the USA or others from these proposed deals. Only that prophetically, the Bible shows that the Europeans will, for a time, dominate international trade.
