Pope Francis concludes ecumenical conference, pushes eucharistic unity, and warns about being pagan

Pope Francis pushed his ecumenical eucharistic agenda today and also warned against appearing to be pagan:

November 7, 2017

The 33rd Ecumenical Meeting of Bishops, Friends of the Focolare Movement concluded with an audience with Pope Francis this morning at the Vatican today. The theme of the meeting was “The Eucharist: Mystery of Communion.”

The Holy Father began by praising the attendance of representatives from different countries, Churches, and ecclesial communities, saying that the meeting “is an expression, fruit of what the love of the Word of God produces.”

“I encourage you to make a treasure of this rich experience and to continue with courage, always attentive to the signs of the times and asking the Lord for the gift of mutual listening and docility to His will,” he said.

The Pope stressed the need for a clear witness of unity and fraternity among Christians. …

The 77-year-old Pontiff went on to say that the central path to unity is the Eucharist, which confirms “the encounter between the grace of Christ and our responsibility” in the highest degree.

Concluding his address, Pope Francis expressed his hope that the Ecumenical Meeting would bear fruits of communion and give witness to Christian unity. ”May the Virgin Mother sustain you in this commitment and in your whole ministry,” he said.  http://www.zenit.org/en/articles/pope-meets-with-ecumenical-meeting-of-bishops-friends-of-the-focolare-movement

“We must be careful not to slip toward the path of being pagan Christians, Christians in appearance,” Pope Francis warned the faithful today during his Mass at Casa Santa Marta. http://www.zenit.org/en/articles/pope-francis-at-santa-marta-worldly-christians-are-enemies-of-the-cross

By claiming that the ‘Eucharist’ is the central path to unity, what Pope Francis is basically stating is that if Protestants, Roman Catholics, and the Eastern Orthodox accept each others “communion” practices, that this is a major step towards his ecumenical goals.

But paganism is, sadly, more common in the Greco-Roman faiths than many realize.

Pagan Head Coverings

While Pope Francis warned against being pagan and just appearing to be Christian, he should consider that the type of hat he and his bishops often wear comes from paganism.  The one shown in the photo at the beginning of this post comes from those who honored one of the pagan fish gods.  Actually, the way that the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Anglican clergies dress ecclesiastically all came from paganism.  They were adopted after a sun-god worshiper got involved in calling church councils (see Were the Early Duties of Elders/Pastors Mainly Sacramental? What was there Dress?).

Here is what the Catholic Lopes reported:

SILVESTER I, ST. (314-335)…he appears to have been the first one to wear the tiara from which the bishop’s mitre is derived. (Lopes A. Translation by Charles Nopar. The Popes. Pontifical Administration, Rome, 1997 and 2005 editions, p. 11)

It appears to be admitted that head coverings for male church leaders was not an early practice of any of the churches that professed Christ. Even those who visit St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City can notice (like I did there in 2009, 2010, and 2013) that the statues of the early leaders shown, such as representations of the Apostles Peter and John, did not have head coverings (a halo on at least one, notwithstanding). But the bishops shown after the time of Constantine normally did have the type of head coverings that Roman bishops wear today.

Thus, even the physical appearance of the Catholic clergy should demonstrate to everyone that they have followed, not the Bible, but pagan traditions such as Mithraism (see also Do You Practice Mithraism?).

Notice something about the word mitre:

mitre (n.) bishop’s tall hat, late 14c., from Old French mitre, from Latin mitra “headband, turban,” from Greek mitra “headband, turban,” earlier a belt or cloth worn under armor about the waist, from PIE root *mei– “to tie” (cf. Sanskrit Mitrah, Old Persian Mithra-, god names; Russian mir “world, peace,” Greek mitos “a warp thread”). In Latin, “a kind of headdress common among Asiatics, the wearing of which by men was regarded in Rome as a mark of effeminacy” [OED]. But the word was used in Vulgate to translate Hebrew micnepheth “headdress of a priest.” (mitre. Online Etymology Dictionary. © 2001-2013 Douglas Harper. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=mitre viewed 12/21/13)

Thus, even the term mitre itself may have ties to Mithra. Notice something from The Catholic Encyclopedia (bolding mine):

Mithra was born of a mother-rock by a river under a tree. He came into the world with the Phrygian cap on his head (hence his designation as Pileatus, the Capped One), and a knife in his hand. (Arendzen J.P. Transcribed by John Looby. Mithraism. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume X. Published 1911. New York: Robert Appleton Company. Nihil Obstat, October 1, 1911. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York)

Notice something from Merriam-Webster’s Encyclopedia of World Religions:

TIARA…in ROMAN CATHOLICISM, triple crown worn by the pope or carried in front of him…The tiara probably developed from the Phrygian cap, or frigium, a conical cap worn in the Graeco-Roman world. In the 10th century the tiara was pictured on papal coins. (Doniger W, editor. Merriam-Webster’s Encyclopedia of World Religions. Merriam-Webster, 1999, p. 1096)

The current hats that Roman bishops currently tend to wear resemble a cross between the Phrygian cap (a type of conical cap) and the ‘fish hats’ associated with Dagon. They do not come from the Bible.

Notice the following:

As the Pope bears the key of Janus, so he wears the mitre of Dagon. The excavations of Nineveh have put this beyond all possibility of doubt. The Papal mitre is entirely different from the mitre of Aaron and the Jewish high priests. That mitre was a turban. The two-horned mitre, which the Pope wears, when he sits on the high altar at Rome and receives the adoration of the Cardinals, is the very mitre worn by Dagon, the fish-god of the Philistines and Babylonians. (Hislop A. Two Babylons. 1858. Loizeaux Brothers, Second American edition 1959, p. 215)

Dagon…the fish god…The head of the fish formed a mitre above that of the man…The figure wore a fringed tunic…His worship seems to have extended over Syria, as well as Mesopotamia, and Chaldæa. (Layard AH. Discoveries in the Ruins of Nineveh and Babylon: With Travels in Armenia, Kurdistan and the Desert: Being the Result of a Second Expedition Undertaken for the Trustees of the British Museum, Part 1. John Murray, 1853 Original from Harvard University, Digitized Jan 8, 2008, pp. 343-344)

The Bible teaches that the children of Israel were to destroy the followers of Dagon (Samson did per Judges 16:23-30) and not adopt any of the religious practices that those who worshiped him or other false deities had (Deuteronomy 12:2-3).

Genuine Church of God leaders follow the teachings of the Bible, including 1 Corinthians 11:3-4. They do not pray or conduct church services wearing hats, mitres, or other religious head coverings. However, just like the Bible allowed the priests in the Old Testament to have beards (e.g. Leviticus 21:1-5; Psalm 133:22), church leaders can have beards or other facial coverings (though in modern times few do).

The Catholic Eucharist is NOT the Biblical One

Of course, what the Church of Rome does related to its eucharist is pagan and comes from pagan sources.

Article 3, under the Seven Sacraments of the Church in the Catechism of the Catholic Church discusses the eucharist. Section II asks and answers the question, What is this Sacrament Called? Several names are listed, including “The Breaking of Bread” (#1329).

It also states the following:

1339 Jesus choose the time of the Passover…And he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them…(Catechism of the Catholic Church. Imprimatur Potest +Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. Doubleday, NY 1995, p. 373)

Now the above is scriptural. Here are some related scriptures:

19 And the disciples did as Jesus appointed to them, and they prepared the pasch.

26 And whilst they were at supper, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke: and gave to his disciples, and said: Take ye, and eat. This is my body. (Matthew 26:19,26 Douay-Rheims)

22 And whilst they were eating, Jesus took bread; and blessing, broke, and gave to them, and said: Take ye. This is my body. (Mark 14:22, Douay-Rheims)

19 And taking bread, he gave thanks, and brake; and gave to them, saying: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this for a commemoration of me. (Luke 22:19, Douay-Rheims)

Notice, it is very clear that Jesus BROKE the bread on Passover (Pasch means Passover).

Getting back to Pope Francis and the ‘Eucharist,’ what Francis is not the same one.  Instead, he advocates was considered to be demonic according to the Apostle Paul:

20 Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons. 22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He? (1 Corinthians 10:20-22)

What the Greco-Roman churches teach and advocate related to “passover” differs from original Christianity. For proof related to ‘communion’ see Marcus, the Marcosians, & Mithraism: Developers of the Eucharist?

Christian Unity Happens After Jesus Returns

The acceptance of various practices associated with the “Eucharist” as Rome pushes is not the key to Christian unity.

Furthermore, the Bible shows that true unity of the faith will NOT come until after the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of His kingdom.

Jesus did NOT come to bring worldwide unity in this age:

51 Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather division. (Luke 12:51)

The Bible shows that a false ecumenical unity will come (Revelation 13:4-8).

Notice also:

6 “Up, up! Flee from the land of the north,” says the Lord; “for I have spread you abroad like the four winds of heaven,” says the Lord. 7 “Up, Zion! Escape, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon.” (Zechariah 2:6-7)

Notice that even true believers are warned to get away from this.

While the true Christian faith will continue (Matthew 16:18), Protestantism as most understand it is doomed. Please, if you are Protestant, Catholic, or Eastern Orthodox and wish to believe what the Bible actually teaches, turn to God, and resist the coming, more powerful, ecumenical appeals which will deceive all but the very elect (Matthew 24:24).

Notice also the following:

10 “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,” says the Lord. 11 “Many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and they shall become My people. And I will dwell in your midst. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you. 12 And the Lord will take possession of Judah as His inheritance in the Holy Land, and will again choose Jerusalem. 13 Be silent, all flesh, before the Lord, for He is aroused from His holy habitation!” (Zechariah 2:10-13)

It is after Babylon falls and Jesus returns that true Christian unity will occur (Zechariah 2:10-11). Do not be deceived by the Babylonian ecumenical movement or the appeals to go to “Mary” or “the Eucharist.”

The Bible warns that nearly all on the earth in the final end times will be deceived (2 Thessalonian 2:9-12). Have the ‘love of the truth’ so that you will not fall for this.
