Catholic endorsements of ‘evolution’

Many Catholic leaders have endorsed evolution, including the current pontiff:

Pope Francis reaffirmed long-held Catholic beliefs that evolution is not “inconsistent” with Creation. “When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so,” he told those gathered for a discussion on Evolving Concepts of Nature. (Gendron M. Pope Affirms Big Bang Theory. Proclaiming the Gospel, November 2014)

Pope Francis . . . was addressing the plenary assembly of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, which gathered at the Vatican to discuss “Evolving Concepts of Nature.”

“When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so,” Francis said. …

“God is not a demiurge [demigod] or a magician, but the Creator who gives being to all entities,” the pope said. “Evolution in nature is not opposed to the notion of Creation, because evolution presupposes the creation of beings that evolve.” …

Catholic teaching traditionally has not been at odds with evolution. In 1950, Pope Pius XII proclaimed there was no opposition between evolution and Catholic doctrine. In 1996, St. John Paul II endorsed Pius’ statement.

Some wondered if Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI wanted to change that when he and some acolytes seemed to endorse the theory of intelligent design, the idea that the world is too complex to have evolved according to Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection. Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn of Vienna, a close associate of Benedict, penned a widely noticed 2005 op-ed in The New York Times that said “Evolution in the sense of common ancestry might be true, but evolution in the neo-Darwinian sense — an unguided, unplanned process … is not.” http://www.religionnews.com/2014/10/27/pope-francis-evolution-inconsistent-notion-creation/

Many influential leaders of the Roman Catholic Church have endorsed evolution and disregarded the literal interpretation of Genesis. In 1950, Pope Pius XII declared that there is no intrinsic conflict between Catholicism and evolution, and, in 2007, Pope Benedict XVI stated that “there are … many scientific proofs in favor of evolution.” (Haley G. Vatican Astronomer Calls Young Earth Creation Beliefs ‘Almost Blasphemous.’ Christian News, October 20, 2014. http://christiannews.net/2014/10/20/catholic-astronomer-calls-young-earth-creation-beliefs-almost-blasphemous/ viewed 11/01/14)

If you thought that was not good, notice the following:

BRISBANE, Australia – An influential Catholic astronomer who works at the Holy See’s Vatican Observatory told a news outlet last week that the literal interpretation of the Genesis creation account is ‘almost blasphemous theology.’

Guy Consolmagno is Coordinator for Public Relations at the Vatican Observatory, which is an astronomical institute operated by the Roman Catholic Church. A popular speaker and author, Consolmagno often comments on matters pertaining to religion and science.

In an interview last week with Australia’s Fairfax Media, Consolmagno forcefully disparaged the young earth, literal interpretation of the biblical creation account, comparing it to blasphemy.

“It’s almost blasphemous theology,” Consolmagno alleged, according to the Brisbane Times. “It’s certainly not the tradition of Catholicism and never has been and it misunderstands what the Bible is and it misunderstands what science is.”

The papal astronomer said he rejects the literal interpretation of Genesis and instead finds truth through “science.”  http://christiannews.net/2014/10/20/catholic-astronomer-calls-young-earth-creation-beliefs-almost-blasphemous/

When I was ten or eleven and attending Catholic school, I was dismayed that evolution was taught as truth.  The evolutionary model is so full of holes it is neither scientific nor truth.  And it certainly is blasphemy to deny the Bible.
