Because of the rise of groups such as the Islamic State, the Obama Administration and others are pushing for a coalition of Arab nations along with Turkey. Syria’s parliament speaker said Sunday that the U.S. should work with Damascus in assembling a coalition to battle the Islamic State extremist group rather than allying with nations that support terrorism.

Speaker Jihad Laham was apparently referring to Saudi Arabia and other countries that back rebels trying to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad. Lahham said during a parliament session that nations that “want to fight terrorism should coordinate” with Damascus rather than Syrian rebel groups. …

Obama is currently working to form a global coalition to confront the Islamic State group, which controls large parts of Syria and Iraq. The U.S. meanwhile has been conducting airstrikes against Islamic State fighters in Iraq since August. Obama last week authorized strikes against the group in Syria.

U.S. officials have ruled out direct coordination with Assad’s government.

The USA ruled out dealing with Iran as well, but then decided to have some involvement.  The reality is that the situation in Syria will one day change.  It too, despite certain views of the Assad regime, will end up in a confederation of Arabs and Turks that the Bible refers to as the King of the South (Daniel 11:40-43).

Islamist militants are advancing in northern Syria, aiming to take over a key Kurdish town that could strengthen the group’s grip along the Turkish border.

Islamic State fighters are nearing the city of Ain al-Arab, also known as Kobane, with reports the group was 10 to 15 kilometers away Sunday after overrunning other towns.

The encroaching militants pushed 70,000 Kurdish refugees into Turkey since Friday. …

About 70,000 people have crossed into Turkey in the past 24 hours as fighting raged near the town of Kobani, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said in a statement. Hundreds of thousands may follow, it warned.

The mass exodus is the latest evidence of the trauma that has gripped Syria and Iraq as the jihadist group rampages through the area. It may also increase pressure on the U.S. and its allies to mount airstrikes in Syria to stop the group, whose army has captured Mosul, Iraq’s biggest northern city, and released videos of its hostages and their beheadings. …

Islamic State militants have seized scores of villages around Kobani, a mainly Kurdish town that’s also known as Ayn al-Arab, according to the U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
