Egypt’s military comes down hard against supporters of elected President Morsi: many more dead!

The Muslim Brotherhood continues to demand the return to power of Egypt’s elected President Mohamed Morsi:

August 14, 2013

News media in Cairo are reporting heavy casualties after Egyptian security forces moved in on two sit-in protests supporting ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

The French News Agency says its reporters counted at least 43 bodies in a makeshift morgue set up by medics manning a field hospital and treating scores of wounded.

Pro-Morsi groups said the casualty figures were much higher. Their figures could not be independently verified. Egyptian state media say at least two security force members have been killed in the melee.

Reuters news agency says at least nine people were killed on Wednesday in the Egyptian province of Fayoum, south of Cairo following fighting at police stations between Morsi supporters and the security forces…

Police backed by bulldozers and armored cars, fired tear gas at the protest sites. Television footage showed smoke rising over the protest site and military helicopters circling in the sky. State media say some 35 protesters have been arrested for having gas cans or cylinders…

Layla Moustafa, an activist in the anti-coup alliance, tells VOA the movement by security forces started early in the morning.

“There were snipers situated on rooftops of buildings near Rabaa. The shootings and dispersals started from approximately seven in the morning today and are ongoing until now.”

She said Wednesday’s actions will not quell the outcry against Morsi’s opponents.

“Already, protesters are taking to the streets right now, nationwide, in all cities. There have been ongoing protests since yesterday nationwide in all governates.”  http://www.voanews.com/content/at-least-15-dead-in-cairo-protests-/1729336.html

CAIRO — More than 100 people were killed in clashes across the country that erupted Wednesday when Egyptian security forces cleared out thousands of people at sit-ins who were demanding the return of ousted president Mohammed Morsi.

The Egyptian Health Ministry says 149 people died and hundreds were injured in the clashes, after which Egypt’s interim president declared a state of emergency and nighttime curfew.

Vice President Mohammed El Baradei announced his resignation from the interim government, saying he “cannot bear the responsibility for one drop of blood.” http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2013/08/14/egypt-camps-demonstrators/2651377/

Egyptian security forces in riot gear swept in with armored vehicles and bulldozers to clear two protest camps in Cairo Wednesday, igniting clashes with pro-Morsi supporters as violence flared across Egypt, leaving more than 50 people dead and hundreds injured.

Khaled el-Khateeb, an Egyptian Health Ministry official, told the Associated Press that clashes between Morsi protesters and security forces killed at least 28 people in Cairo, 25 in Minya province south of the capital and one each in the cities of Alexandria, Assiut and Ban Suef. Sky News also said that Mick Deane, a cameraman, was among the dead.

The camps cleared Wednesday had been the catalyst of protests since former President Mohammed Morsi was overthrown by the Egypt’s military on July 3, with thousands calling for his reinstatement.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s political arm, which backs Morsi, claimed that more than 500 protesters were killed and some 9,000 wounded in the two camps, but those figures could not be confirmed and nothing in Associated Press footage or local TV networks suggested such a high death toll.

Mohammed el-Beltagy, a senior Brotherhood leader, put the death toll at more than 300 and called on the police and army troops to mutiny against their commanders and on Egyptians to take to the streets to show their disapproval of Wednesday’s raids on the sit-ins. http://www.foxnews.com/world/2013/08/14/egyptian-security-forces-attempt-to-clear-pro-morsi-protests/#ixzz2bx3lfuNm

The once so-called ‘bastion of democracy’ known as the USA keeps wanting to overlook the presidential election in Egypt.  It has refused to call a military coup d’état a coup, plans to provide US financial aid to the military-backed government, and apparently hopes for a new and speedy presidential election. BTW, the photo at the beginning of this post is from a Wikipedia article titled “2013 Egyptian coup d’état.”  A 2013 Egyptian coup d’état is what occurred. The USA, by providing funding to the takeover government, is violating its own laws.

Violating the Law to Subsidize Egypt’s Coup: Bipartisan Foolishness in Washington

U.S. policy in Egypt has been a disaster. For decades Washington backed rule by an authoritarian dictatorship that persecuted religious minorities and socialized the economy. Now the short-lived democratic revolution has been replaced by military rule with a meaningless civilian veneer. Washington should cut off foreign aid and disengage.

Instead, the Obama administration has embraced putative dictatorship, refusing to characterize the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi as a coup. If only George Orwell was alive today.

The military worked with the opposition to encourage demonstrations threatening public chaos. The military arrested the president, top officials, and high-level members of his party and movement. The military leveled fantastic criminal charges against the president and his supporters. The military closed down allied television stations and arrested journalists. The military appointed dictatorial retreads as interim president and other high officials.

The military treated all opponents as “terrorists.” The military recreated the de facto secret police, the Interior Ministry departments which investigate political and religious activities. The military shot and killed protestors. But the administration says there was no coup. According to Secretary of State John Kerry, “the military did not take over to the best of our judgment so far.” Rather, “there’s a civilian government,” he claimed. “In effect, they were restoring democracy.”…

Today virtually every Egyptian blames America. Gen. Sisi and the secular liberals criticize the administration for being pro-Muslim Brotherhood. Despite Washington’s de facto endorsement of his putsch, Gen. Sisi complained: “You turned your back on Egyptians.” The Brotherhood, with far greater cause, complains that Washington green-lighted the coup and supports it now. In Cairo American officials talk but no one listens. Administration fecklessness, hypocrisy, and impotence are on display around the world.

Yet leading Republicans have endorsed the Obama policy. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/doug-bandow/violating-the-law-to-subs_b_3745663.html

Wadah Khanfar Blasts Egypt’s Military, Calls Out U.S. ‘Hypocrisy,’ Warns Of ‘Collapse Of The Entire Region’

Former Director General of Al Jazeera Wadah Khanfar joined me…for a wide-ranging conversation on the ongoing violence in Egypt, slamming the military’s “horrific” crackdown on civilians and accusing the United States of hypocrisy, predicting both civil war in Egypt and the “collapse of the entire region” if there is no real U.S. intervention against military violence there…

Khanfar, co-founder of the Sharq Forum and one of the most widely-respected journalists in the Arab world, predicted the situation in Egypt will have major consequences in an already volatile region.

“If this coup continues in Egypt, then we are not only in front of a dictatorship, a military dictatorship, but we are facing the collapse of the entire region,” he said. “No government, no international power will be able to predict or even imagine what kind of consequences we are going to see in this region.”

Khanfar said that Egyptian minister of defense Lt. General Abdul Fatah al-Sisi reminded him of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi by invoking the Bush administration’s favorite phrase to frame Egyptian civilians as terrorist and thus justify violence against them.

“The [phrase] ‘War on Terrorism’ became very useful for our dictators,” Khanfar said. “Today Sisi is imitating Muammar Gaddafi, who used the war on terrorism to put down people and put them in jail.”  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/29/wadah-khanfar-blasts-egyp_n_3671948.html

The whole region will change. A dictatorial leader will ultimately emerge and turn the region of North Africa and the Middle East into a massive state that will profess loyalty to Islam while also making deceptive deals with the Europeans (cf. Daniel 11:27; 9:27).

USA must be and should be embarrassed that its support for the military-installed government in Egypt has resulted in it killing hundreds and being it still be being protested against.

Egyptians are not stupid and many recall that the USA long has had a policy of encouraging democracy in the Arab World. Now, because of matters of let’s call ‘political expediency,’ the USA reneged on supporting what it claimed to support. This USA hypocrisy is obvious. This ultimately will not turn out well for the USA (cf. Psalm 83:2-8; Isaiah 10:5-11, KJV).

There will be changes in Egypt.  Bible prophecy shows that many relatively near term events will also not turn out well for Egypt. Notice one such prophecy:

4 And the Egyptians I will give
Into the hand of a cruel master,
And a fierce king will rule over them,
Says the Lord, the Lord of hosts. (Isaiah 19:4)

The Bible is clear that a King of the South will rise up in the areas of North Africa and the Middle East (Daniel 11:40-43). Egypt will lead or at least support this King, and Egypt will not fare well (Daniel 11:42).

An Egyptian-related confederation is also discussed in Ezekiel:

4 The sword shall come upon Egypt,And great anguish shall be in Ethiopia, When the slain fall in Egypt, And they take away her wealth, And her foundations are broken down.

5 “Ethiopia, Libya, Lydia, all the mingled people, Chub, and the men of the lands who are allied, shall fall with them by the sword.”

6 ‘Thus says the Lord:

“Those who uphold Egypt shall fall,And the pride of her power shall come down. From Migdol to Syene Those within her shall fall by the sword,” Says the Lord God. 7 “They shall be desolate in the midst of the desolate countries, And her cities shall be in the midst of the cities that are laid waste. 8 Then they will know that I am the Lord, When I have set a fire in Egypt And all her helpers are destroyed. 9 On that day messengers shall go forth from Me in ships To make the careless Ethiopians afraid, And great anguish shall come upon them, As on the day of Egypt; For indeed it is coming!” (Ezekiel 30:4-9)

It will likely be a religious, Islamic-oriented, government that will help create the coming confederation.  And the Bible shows that Egypt will not fare well in the future. Events in Egypt are setting the stage for these and other prophecies to be fulfilled.

But I should add that not all is lost for the Egyptians. They too will ultimately be offered salvation, and the Bible shows that many there will take it. Notice:

19 In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the Lord at its border. 20 And it will be for a sign and for a witness to the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt; for they will cry to the Lord because of the oppressors, and He will send them a Savior and a Mighty One, and He will deliver them. 21 Then the Lord will be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians will know the Lord in that day, and will make sacrifice and offering; yes, they will make a vow to the Lord and perform it. 22 And the Lord will strike Egypt, He will strike and heal it; they will return to the Lord, and He will be entreated by them and heal them.

23 In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian will come into Egypt and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians will serve with the Assyrians.

24 In that day Israel will be one of three with Egypt and Assyria — a blessing in the midst of the land, 25 whom the Lord of hosts shall bless, saying, “Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.” (Isaiah 19:19-25)

So, despite the bad news, there ultimately will be good news for the Egyptians, along with the rest of humanity, in the coming Kingdom of God. All should heed Jesus’ words and pray, “Your Kingdom come” (Matthew 6:10).
