General Dempsey: USA losing military lead; Russia claims USA policy is confrontational

The relative decline and aggressiveness of US military force is in the news related to comments from its top military officer:

Russia said Thursday a new U.S. military strategy was confrontational and would not help improve relations with Moscow, strained by the crisis in Ukraine.

The strategy, released by the Pentagon on Wednesday, said Russia had repeatedly demonstrated it does not respect the sovereignty of its neighbors and that it was willing to use force to achieve its goals.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed regret about the content of the document and said it indicated a “confrontational attitude, devoid of any objectivity towards our country.”

“Of course this will hardly contribute to attempts to steer bilateral relations in the direction of normalisation,” he told reporters during a conference call.

“[T]he 2015 strategy recognizes that success will increasingly depend on how well our military instrument supports the other instruments of national power and how it enables our network of allies and partners,” Dempsey said Wednesday.

The military will continue its pivot to the Pacific, Dempsey writes, but its presence in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa will evolve. The top U.S. military officer said Wednesday that while the United States is still the world’s most powerful fighting force, other countries are starting to close the gap.

Announcing the 2015 National Military Strategy, Joint Chiefs Chairman General Martin Dempsey said other nations are investing heavily in their military capabilities.

The general said that since the Pentagon published its last military strategy in 2011, global disorder has increased and some of the advantages the U.S. had over other nations have started to erode.

Dempsey said the U.S. military needs to be more agile, innovative and integrated, and it must remain globally engaged.

The 2015 strategy notes that Russia has “repeatedly demonstrated that it does not respect the sovereignty of its neighbors” and is willing to use force to achieve its goals. It says “Russia’s military actions are undermining regional security directly and through proxy forces,” a reference to its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.

The strategy says Iran’s nuclear program worries U.S. allies in the Mideast and that Iran actively sponsors terrorist groups in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen.

It calls North Korea an “outlaw state” with atomic weapons and says it is building missiles capable of reaching the U.S.

But the strategy says China is in a “different class” and encourages the Chinese to “become a partner for greater international security.”

It does say, however, that China could be a threat to the U.S. and that its actions in the South China Sea — where China has flaunted its military might in island disputes with its neighbors — are “worrisome.”

The strategy says globalization and technology are letting people travel around the world in a way never seen before, and that makes a complex security situation even more complicated.

The Islamic State group in 2015 is not like al-Qaida in 2011, with a command-and-control unit giving orders. Dempsey called Islamic State “transregional” with other terrorist groups placing themselves under the Islamic State umbrella.

General Dempsey’s comments that the U.S. is trying to build a network to combat the Islamic State, means that the U.S. is trying to put together various coalitions, including one consistent with biblical prophecies related to the final King of the South (Daniel 11:40-43). Although this King of the South will have a temporal time of peace (cf. Daniel 9:27; 11:27), his coalition will end with military defeat (Daniel 11:40-43; Ezekiel 30:2-8). But, I should add that Bible prophecy shows that the USA will be defeated militarily before the King of the South is per Daniel 11:39-43. US defense policy to promote a ‘network’ of Islamic nations to deal with the Islamic State will not result in lasting peace for the USA.

General Dempsey’s comments about Russia, China, and North Korea will tend to encourage all of them to arm further. Russia and China have been taking steps to further arm, and General Dempsey’s comments would tend to encourage them to continue in that direction.

Because Russia is trying to increase arms, the Europeans are concerned as well. The efforts and actions of Russia, combined with the USA’s relatively recent Asia pivot strategy (developed by Hillary Clinton when she was Barack Obama’s Secretary of State), combined with certain USA actions and inactions, is encouraging the Europeans to arm. And it is no secret that Germany, in particular, wants a European army independent of the USA as I recently reported here (see Germany military looking to be ‘Independent of the USA’).

While many in the USA see Russia and China as major threats, the Bible does not describe anything that resembles massive war between the USA and the forces of the East. The Armageddon related battle does NOT involve the USA because the USA will be gone three plus years before that happens (see also Anglo – America in Prophecy & the Lost Tribes of Israel).

Since USA leaders, like General Dempsey, do not rely on biblical prophecy, the USA is, to a degree, focusing on enemies that the USA will not have ‘end of the world’ wars with, while those American leaders not only ignore the slowly rising threat from Europe, they are encouraging it. The Bible clearly warns that nations considered to be ‘friends’ will become enemies and treacherously deal with the USA (cf. (Lamentations 1:1-2).

We in the Continuing Church of God strive to always rely on the Bible: ” We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts” (2 Peter 1:19, KJV). Most USA leaders will not. What about you?
