India: 600 Million Lose Power

India has had major power outages:

31 July 2012

New Delhi (CNN) — India suffered its second huge, crippling power failure in two days Tuesday, depriving as much as half of the vast and populous country, or up to 600 million people, of electricity and disrupting transport networks.

The first power grid collapse, on Monday, was the country’s worst blackout in a decade. It affected seven states in northern India that are home to more than 350 million people.

But Tuesday’s failure was even larger, hitting eastern and northeastern areas as well.

Both blackouts cut power in the Indian capital, New Delhi.  The power companies that operate the affected electricity grids reported Tuesday’s collapse on their websites.  http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/31/world/asia/india-blackout/index.html

31 July 2012

NEW DELHI – About 600 million people lost power in India on Tuesday when the country’s northern and eastern electricity grids failed, crippling the country for a second consecutive day.  The outage stopped hundreds of trains in their tracks, darkened traffic lights, shuttered the Delhi Metro and left nearly everyone — the police, water utilities, private businesses and citizens — without electricity…India, however, has an unofficial power grid in the form of huge numbers of backup diesel generators and other private power sources.  http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/01/world/asia/power-outages-hit-600-million-in-india.html

While I rarely report on specific power outages, having about 600,000,000 affected by two in two days seems an item of significance.

India derives a lot of foreign-source earnings from software and other services that require electricity.  The causes for the outages in India are under investigation.

Most in Western nations, other than hospitals and government buildings, do not have the type of back-up electricity systems that the Indians tend to have.  Hence the West is more vulnerable, in many ways, than India to more severe consequences of massive power outages.

Power outages were also discussed in my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect. Here are a few passages related to them if caused by something like a solar outburst:

Notice the following from N.A.S.A.:

Solar outbursts have been proposed that could essentially wipe out modern civilization…

Notice a scenario that is based on a report from the U.S. National Academy of Scientists (although the precise date seems to be speculative):

IT IS midnight on 22 September 2012 and the skies above Manhattan are filled with a flickering curtain of colourful light…Within 90 seconds, the entire eastern half of the US is without power.

A year later and millions of Americans are dead and the nation’s infrastructure lies in tatters. The World Bank declares America a developing nation. Europe, Scandinavia, China and Japan are also struggling to recover from the same fateful event…

First to go – immediately for some people – is drinkable water…With no electricity to pump water from reservoirs, there is no more…There is simply no electrically powered transport: no trains, underground or overground…For hospitals, that would mean about 72 hours of running a bare-bones, essential care only, service. After that, no more modern healthcare.

The truly shocking finding is that this whole situation would not improve for months, maybe years…

As N.A.S.A./N.O.A.A. report indicated that the next solar cycle peak may be later, like May 2013.

While India should be able to regain its power sources and electricity, few consider today how devastating the loss of electricity can be in 21st century societies.

A one or two day outage is a costly annoyance.  Outages lasting weeks or longer can be a devastating time of trouble and sorrow.  And this can, and at some point will, happen to at least parts of the Anglo-west.
