Massive protests in Ukraine in support of the EU

There are massive protests in Ukraine against the government’s decision to not sign an agreement with the European Union:

December 08, 2013

Thousands of Ukrainians are flocking to the center of the capital city of Kyiv for what opposition leaders expect to be the largest anti-government demonstration since mass protests started three weeks ago.

Organizers hope around one million people show up Sunday to protest President Viktor Yanukovych’s decision to back away from a trade deal with the European Union. Instead, he opted to preserve economic ties to Moscow.

Opposition leader Arseniy Yatsenyuk said he would negotiate with President Yanukovych only if he named a new government that will deepen European ties.

The opposition protests erupted late last month, after President Yanukovych refused to sign a long-anticipated EU trade deal.  Days later, at an EU summit in Lithuania, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told the Ukrainian leader, “We expected more from you.”

For its part, Russia has in recent months exerted strong economic pressure on cash-strapped Kyiv to discourage the EU deal.  Russia is Ukraine’s largest foreign investor, trading partner and chief natural gas supplier.

Moscow is seeking to form a trade bloc of former Soviet republics and satellite countries. Earlier this year, it imposed restrictions on goods from Ukraine, cutting Ukrainian exports 25 percent and dragging the country into recession.  http://www.voanews.com/content/thousands-gather-for-protest-against-ukraine-government/1806011.html

What will happen to Ukraine?

In the Book of Daniel, it is prophesied that a little horn would develop into what apparently is becoming a European entity. Actually what is now the EU began as a small organization involving three small countries located in the northern and western regions of Europe (Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, called the Benelux nations)–they then helped form the European Economic Community. Which expanded into the European Union.

Notice that the Bible prophesied that a little horn would mainly expand South and East:

9 And out of one of them came a little horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Glorious Land. 10 And it grew up to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and some of the stars to the ground, and trampled them. 11 He even exalted himself as high as the Prince of the host; and by him the daily sacrifices were taken away, and the place of His sanctuary was cast down. 12 Because of transgression, an army was given over to the horn to oppose the daily sacrifices; and he cast truth down to the ground. He did all this and prospered. (Daniel 8:9-12).

And while the above has had a past fulfillment, this prophecy seems to be dual (compare with Daniel 11:27-39). Anyway, the European Union has mainly expanded south and east of the Benelux nations.

Ukraine is south and mainly east of the nations that once were part of Benelux. So it, for a while at least, may end up supporting Europe.

A powerful union is rising up in Europe. For a while, the world will cooperate with it and will prosper, but it will later fall (Revelation 18).

Yet ultimately, at least part of the destruction of the Babylonian European power will come from forces associated with Russia (Jeremiah 50:41-43).  Most of the Ukrainians are Eastern or Russian Orthodox, which makes them closer (in professed religion at least) to the Russians that the Western Europeans–though many of the Eastern Europeans have some version of the Eastern Orthodox faith.

But the Ukrainians, like many others, are impressed with economic interests.

The EU is already the world’s largest economy and number 1 exporter. Gaining additional supporters will have its problems (cf. Daniel 2:41-43), but will also give it the appearance of strength for a time–till it is destroyed (Daniel 2:44).  Many in Ukraine are signally that they wish to be part of it.

Maybe, for a time, Ukraine will be.
