More dying in China from H7N9 ‘bird flu’

Avian flu again? Yes. Notice the following:

A massive poultry cull is underway in China as the country announced a sixth human death from a new bird flu strain Friday.

Health authorities in Shanghai ordered the slaughter of all birds at a market where the H7N9 flu virus was found in pigeons being sold for meat. The sale of live fowl has also been halted.

Influenza viruses are characterized by the hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N) proteins on the virus. They can have up to 17 hemagglutinin proteins and 10 neuraminidase proteins, and you can have any combination of that. For example, the bird-flu virus that we have known previously is called H5N1, so hemagglutinin 5 neuraminidase 1. Thus, there is another bird flu that seems to have come from Asia. Because of agricultural practices related to raising of livestock, including poultry, Asia (often China) is traditionally the place where new flu viruses originate. But, of course, they then have a tendency to spread around the globe.

Relatively soon, serious pestilences are prophesied as part of what Jesus called “the beginning of sorrows”–which includes famines and pestilences (Matthew 24:7-8). Whether or how birds may be involved is not mentioned in scripture–but a reduction in poultry can certainly affect food supplies. We will see what happens with this strain of the “bird flu.”
