The Occupy Wall Street protests have happened in many cities in the Western world and seem to represent a certain ideology:
The Atlantic – Christopher Alessi – 18 October 2011
The Occupy Wall Street protests that began in New York City a month ago gained worldwide momentum over the weekend, as hundreds of thousands of demonstrators in nine hundred cities protested corporate greed and wealth inequality…The unrest comes amid a mounting European sovereign debt crisis…In the United States, anger at Wall Street bankers seen as responsible for the global financial crisis–and at the government, for bailing out the banks with taxpayer money–is exacerbated by a persistently dismal job market….
President Barack Obama–who received sizable campaign contributions from Wall Street in 2008–sought to tap into the movement’s energy this weekend, gently lending it credence (Bloomberg).”The unemployed worker,” he said, “can rightly challenge the excesses of Wall Street without demonizing all who work there.”
President Obama and the Democratic leadership are making a critical error in embracing the Occupy Wall Street movement…Our research shows clearly that the movement doesn’t represent unemployed America and is not ideologically diverse. Rather, it comprises an unrepresentative segment of the electorate that believes in radical redistribution of wealth, civil disobedience and, in some instances, violence.

While I do not agree with all the political shenanigans involving banks and banking bailouts, I believe that the main point of the protesters is class warfare. Many of the protesters apparently believe that they are entitled to assets that other people have accumulated. US President Barack Obama, in my view, has repeatedly encouraged class warfare through his rhetoric and so the “Occupy” movement is no surprise (I believe that if he is re-elected, that there is a good chance that Barack Obama will see protests turning increasingly violent in the future). In my view, while there are appropriate biblical provisions for debt relief (Deuteronomy 15:1-2), gleaning (Leviticus 19:10), helping the poor (1 Timothy 5:3-7; Deuteronomy 26:12-15, see also Is Third Tithe Still Valid Today?), and certain land distribution issues (Leviticus 25:8-17), what many of the protesters seem to want is unbiblical (cf Acts 5:4; Exodus 20:17). The reality is that producing more goods and services, from a carnal perspective, is economically what the USA needs. Protests generally speaking, do not do that. Covetousness, which is a lot of what I have heard related to the “Occupy” movement is not love, nor appropriate for real Christians:
5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. (Hebrews 13:5)
When I watched some o of the “Occupy Wall Street” protesters/leaders interviewed, the following sections of scripture came to mind:
1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! 6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. (2 Timothy 3:1-8) 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)
We are living in the last days and at least some of the protesters seemed to be fulfilling much of the above. The London riots and the flash mobs in the USA this past summer also brought these verses to mind. The sorrows and troubles are just beginning (Matthew 24:5-8) and will get much worse (Matthew 24:21-22). I believe that class warfare and other protests will help weaken the USA and other Anglo-nations and may also be a factor in them being vulnerable to real warfare: invasion by the Beast. (I also suspect that protests and civil unrest in Europe will be factors in the actual rise the Beast, as he will be a militaristic leader cf. Revelation 13:4.) As Jesus said:
37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:36-37)
Troubling protests are a sign to watch.
