Snowden, NSA, Australia, Indonesia, and Europe

A report came out from the Snowden materials that Australia spied on Indonesia and offered this information to the USA’s NSA:

Australian spies tapped a US law firm representing Indonesia in a trade dispute with the US, new leaks say.

The 2013 document obtained by the New York Times does not identify the US law firm, but says the Australians offered the intercepts to their allies at the US National Security Agency (NSA).

Previous allegations of Australian spying on Indonesia has led to worsening ties.

The alleged documents have been leaked by ex-NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

Last month, Mr Snowden alleged that the NSA conducted industrial espionage.

In an interview with Germany’s ARD TV channel, the former contractor said the agency would spy on big German companies that competed with US firms.

I suspect the above was just released to coincide with US Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit to Indonesia (see Kerry’s warning on climate change and the biblical realities). Be that as it may, it somewhat confirms other leaks.

The Snowden leaks have shown that the USA considers that Canada, Australia, Great Britain, and New Zealand are the USA’s only ‘close friends’ and that the USA needs to spy on everyone else. This has not set well with those in Europe or South America–two regions that I believe are prophesied to work closer together in the future.

Within Europe, the Germans appear to be the most upset as they also seemingly were spied on more than almost any nation (including nations that the USA considers to be enemies. Yesterday, Germany’s Angela Merkel met with French President Hollande and they announced that they want a communication system that bypasses the USA:

BERLIN — German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday she would talk to French President Francois Hollande about building up a European communication network to avoid e-mails and other data passing through the United States.

Merkel, speaking on Saturday ahead of a visit to France, has been pushing for greater data protection in Europe following reports last year about mass surveillance in Germany and elsewhere by the U.S. National Security Agency. Even Merkel’s cell phone was reportedly monitored by American spies.

Merkel said in her weekly podcast she disapproved of companies like Google and Facebook basing their operations in countries with low safeguards on data protection while being active in countries like Germany with high data protection.

“We’ll talk with France about how we can maintain a high level of data protection,” Merkel said before her visit to Paris on Wednesday.

“Above all, we’ll talk about European providers that offer security for our citizens, so that one shouldn’t have to send emails and other information across the Atlantic. Rather one could build up a communication network inside Europe.”

Government snooping is a particularly sensitive subject in Germany due to the heavy surveillance of citizens practised in the Communist East Germany and under Hitler.

The country was shocked by reports of NSA surveillance in Germany, based on information from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

“We’ve got to do more for data protection in Europe, there’s no doubt about it,” Merkel said on Saturday.

Germany has been pushing, so far in vain, for a ‘no-spy’ agreement with Washington.

Merkel said that other topics she plans to discuss at the Franco-German summit on Wednesday include closer cooperation on climate protection ahead of the 2015 climate conference in France and security policies, in particular in Africa. http://www.voanews.com/content/reu-merkel-hollande-to-discuss-possible-european-communication-network/1852121.html

I would add that President Hollande was just in the USA week and the Obama Administration seemed to be quite pleased with him. But notice that he too has backed a communication’s system to bypass the USA. As I reported a couple of days ago, Europe is in the process of getting more communication satellites for its Galileo ‘GPS’ system into space. It would seem logical that software related to this would be recoded in ways to attempt to bypass the USA. The USA has long considered that Galileo could be a threat to its military (see ), and the current flap over the Snowden leaks about USA espionage would seemingly provide greater incentive for the Europeans to prepare to be even more independent of the USA than many thought that they would be. Furthermore, the NSA matter gives the Europeans a convenient excuse when the USA asks about some of what they are working on–the Europeans will likely flat-out say that they are taking clandestine steps because of what Snowden leaked. The USA will tend to be embarrassed and not push the Europeans for more information like it normally would do. This will give the Europeans unique advantages over the USA.

Furthermore, while the USA will not agree to no espionage (as it knows it would not really stop and likely will get ‘caught’ on something again), Barack Obama promised Angela Merkel that the USA would stop listening in on her cell phone and that the USA would share its espionage techniques with Germany and the European Union. The latter will badly hurt the USA in the future.
