The USA began dropping bombs in Iraq again:

August 8, 2014

PENTAGON—U.S. military aircraft have conducted a strike on Islamist militant artillery used against Kurdish forces defending Erbil, a Pentagon spokesman said Friday.

Two F/A-18 aircraft dropped 500-pound laser-guided bombs on a mobile artillery piece at 6:45 a.m. EST, according to the Pengaton’s press secretary, Rear Admiral John Kirby. Militants led by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant were using the artillery to shell Kurdish forces defending Erbel, where U.S. personnel including diplomats and military advisers also are located.

Kirby said the decision to strike was made by the U.S. Central Command commander under authorization granted by President Barack Obama.

He added that, as the president made clear in a statement Thursday night, the U.S. military will continue to take direct action against ISIL when American personnel and facilities are threatened.  http://www.voanews.com/content/us-planes-strike-isil-artillery-in-iraq/2407119.html

It is believed that the USA wants to intervene as little as it feels it must militarily.  Some wonder though if the USA will decide to do more. Notice also the following:

The man who won the presidency in 2008 because he opposed the Iraq war and then ended it now finds himself facing this dilemma: Once you’re back in, how do you get out? That very dilemma, according our reporting, was PRECISELY why President Obama until yesterday hadn’t committed U.S. force against the militant Sunni group ISIS, even as many in the intel community and on his own national security staff were urging him to act sooner. The fear: You get in even incrementally, and it’s hard to get out. Because how do you STOP helping if the initial help doesn’t work? But Obama’s main calculus changed yesterday when he announced the authorization of force — because ISIS is on the march against the Kurds in Erbil. And if you lose the Kurds, you lose Iraq. (The United States has also authorized the use of force to help the Yezidi whom ISIS has chased into the mountains; Obama used the word “genocide.”) In his statement last night, the president vowed that U.S. soldiers won’t set foot in Iraq. “I will not allow the United States to be dragged into fighting another war in Iraq. And so even as we support Iraqis as they take the fight to these terrorists, American combat troops will not be returning to fight in Iraq, because there’s no American military solution to the larger crisis in Iraq.” But it’s never easy to be half of the way in, especially when the United States makes the determination that ISIS can’t overrun the Kurds. …

The USA President publicly announced his plans after Pope Francis and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon both made appeals to the international community:

Pope Francis calls for action as Iraqi Christians forced to flee
Aug 7, 2014
Pope Francis appealed to world leaders on Thursday to help end the crisis in northern Iraq after a sweeping advance by radical Islamic state militants forced thousands of residents of Iraq’s biggest Christian town to flee their homes…

7 August 2014 – As Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorists continue to overrun areas of northern Iraq, the United Nations has begun coordinating humanitarian assistance for displaced vulnerable ethnic and religious minorities, while Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling on the international community to support Iraq and help the Government alleviate the suffering of all those impacted by the spiralling violence.

“The Secretary-General is deeply appalled at today’s reports of attacks by the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) in Kirkuk, and Qaraqosh, and earlier attacks in Tal Afar and Sinjar district, affecting mainly the vulnerable communities of Christians, Turkomen, and Yezidis,” said Mr. Ban said in a statement issued by his spokesperson in New York today…

Mr. Ban called on the international community, “especially those with the influence and resources” to positively impact the situation, to support the Government and people of Iraq and to do all it can to help alleviate the suffering of the population affected by the current conflict in Iraq.

The UN Security Council condemned the attacks by ISIL and again expressed its “deep outrage” about the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis — many of them from vulnerable minority communities, especially Yezidis and Christians — displaced by ISIL’s attacks and in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.  http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=48439#.U-TYO2OTFGM

While neither the Pope nor UN Secretary General directly mentioned taking military action, their words were likely seen by many as at least supportive of some military intervention there.

For various reasons, I felt that Barack Obama would take some military action in Iraq, and he has.  Whether or not he partially did because of Pope Francis’ and/or Ban Ki-Moon’s appeals may not be known.  Historically, Barack Obama has preferred to take military action mainly after he has concurrence with leaders outside of the USA.

I have reported about the situation with ISIS (which calls itself the Islamic State now) and the Kurds here (e.g. see Kurds request US military weapons to fight ‘Islamic State’ and ‘Islamic State’ takes oil field from Kurds and attacks Lebanon).  Many realize that the Kurds have tended to be staunch USA allies, and partially because of the lack of military intervention of the USA regarding Crimea, I felt that the USA would decide it had to attack some place to show that it will use its military.  So, after the Pope’s appeal, it has happened.

What the Islamic State wants is dangerous and it had used terrorism and mass killings to try to attain its objectives.  The Islamic State hopes to unite all Muslims into an Islamic caliphate. The Islamic Nation is a terrorist organization that hates, persecutes, and kills. It is not what those in Iraq, Lebanon, or Syria truly need.

As far as the goal of an Islamic confederation that the Islamic State (formerly known as ISIL, then ISIS) has, the Bible shows that the lands that would seemingly be involved will unite in the future, but that will not end well per Daniel 11:40-43 and Ezekiel 30:2-8. I have not believed that the current groups calling itself the Islamic State would lead it, but only that the goal of a confederation of the predominantly Arabic lands is coming.

The USA has again inserted itself into the region militarily and this will have some impact now, but this may also other ramifications later.  There are many biblical prophecies about terrorism (for a list, see Iraq, the King of the South, Armageddon, and Prophecy) and today’s actions may set some off.  The Islamic State will not take kindly to being bombed.
