Although most Syrian chemical weapons are claimed to be gone, allegedly some were used again today!

Chemical Weapons Canisters

Syria reportedly used chemical weapons today and yesterday:

Syrian rebels are once again charging that government forces have attacked civilians in rebel-held territory with chlorine gas – a substance not covered by last September’s international agreement, brokered by the U.S. and Russia, to remove chemical weapons from the war-torn nation.

According to the local council in Daria, near Damascus, the town was targeted Tuesday with small barrel bombs that appeared to contain chlorine gas. The council reported that ambulances were transporting the injured to field hospitals, and published a video on YouTube to back up its claim.

The council said that victims suffered suffocation and shortness of breath, but that so far the number of casualties is small, with no deaths.

Tuesday’s incident was the second alleged attack in 24 hours. On Monday, opposition groups charged that barrel bombs loaded with chlorine were dropped from helicopters on the town of Telminnes in the central province of Hama.

Earlier this month, there were alleged chlorine attacks on another rebel-held town, Kfar Zeita, and a village near the Turkish border. In each case, rebels provided journalists with videos of the alleged attack.

The global chemical watchdog says Syria has handed over more than 86 percent of its chemical weapons stockpiles.

The Hague-based Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said Tuesday that Syria had delivered another batch of chemicals to the port of Latakia to be destroyed offshore on a U.S. ship. The agreed upon deadline to eradicate Syria of its chemical stockpile is June 30.

This news comes as U.S. officials have said they have indications toxic chemicals were used in a rebel area of Syria this month.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the alleged attack in the western village of Kafr Zita involved an industrial chemical that was probably chlorine.

“We are examining allegations that the government was responsible. We take all allegations of the use of chemicals in combat very seriously. And we are working to determine what happened. We will continue consulting and sharing information with key partners, including of course at the OPCW,” said Carney.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said chlorine was not on the list of chemicals that Syria declared last year when it agreed under international pressure to destroy the arms.

Washington and its allies say President Bashar al-Assad’s forces unleashed sarin gas last year, killing hundreds of civilians. The Syrian government said it was the opposition fighters who used the chemical weapons.

French President Francois Hollande said France also has indications that chemical weapons are still being used in Syria.

So, there is a deadline to coming up to destroy the weapons, and supposedly some others are getting used.  Hopefully, the damage from the alleged use of chemical weapons will be highly limited.

The USA was involved in brokering the deal to eliminate the chemical weapons, and that of itself is good.  Yet, despite what the USA might hope for, there really is no major ‘good side’ in this conflict. A variety of interim deals and battles will likely occur, but not result in what the USA claims it wants.

More trouble is coming to Damascus as it will be destroyed (Isaiah 17:1). An Islamic confederation that will include the land of Syria is coming (Daniel 11:40-43; Ezekiel 30:1-8; Psalm 83:4-8) is coming, which means that there will be changes to the Assad regime.

A worsening situation, which chemical weapons use might indicate, in Syria would seem to be a factor in speeding up this occurrence.

“And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!” (Mark 13:37).
