Facts about George Orwell’s ‘nineteen eighty-four’ and now official asset forfeiture

Ran across an article about George Orwell’s book, nineteen eighty-four:

George Orwell’s novel 1984 was incredibly popular at the time it was published, and it remains incredibly popular to this day. With multiple stars citing the book as one of their favorites – including Stephen King, David Bowie, Mel Gibson, and Kit Harrington – 1984 has been growing in popularity in recent years. The book reappeared on best-seller lists in early 2017, as some argued Orwell’s dystopian vision had finally arrived. …

Before he wrote 1984, Orwell worked for the British government during World War II as a propagandist at the BBC. …

Orwell initially named the novel 1980, and then 1982 before settling on 1984. Since it was written in 1948, some think that Orwell devised the title by inverting the year the book was written. Additionally, he thought about naming the novel The Last Man in Europe. …

On an ironic note, Orwell himself was under government surveillance while writing his novel warning about government surveillance. The British government was watching Orwell because they believed he held socialist opinions. …

The slogan “2 + 2 = 5” originated from Russia, where the Communist regime used it as a motto of sorts in an effort to help them accomplish the goals of their five-year plan in only four years. Though the slogan is still used to point out the ills of totalitarian brainwashing today, it was not coined by Orwell. …

In addition to borrowing a piece of Russian propaganda, Orwell also borrowed some Japanese propaganda for his novel. The “Thought Police” are based on the Japanese wartime secret police who literally arrested Japanese citizens for having “unpatriotic thoughts.” Their official name was the Kempeitai, and they officially named their pursuit the “Thought War.” …

Though his book may be popular, Orwell’s novel also makes the list of the world’s top ten most frequently banned books. Some ban it for what they claim are pro-communist points of view, and others have banned it because it is anti-communist. The title The Last Man in Europe is interesting because Europe is prophesied to be under totalitarian control during the time of the Great Tribulation.

When George Orwell wrote nineteen eighty-four, the technology for the type of governmental surveillance he wrote of did not exist.

It does now.

Furthermore, in many parts of the world, governments are collecting the massive amounts of data on their people like that which is alluded to in Orwell’s novel.

With the rise of technology we have also seen the rise of governmental monitoring and censorship.

The most famous line I remember related to ‘1984’ was “Big Brother is Watching You.”

In more and more ways now, that is possible.

Sadly, there is interest in increased governmental surveillance by the Trump Administration. But I will also add that his Administration would only be building on the what the Bush Administration started with the so-called Patriot Act, and the massively expanded surveillance under the Obama Administration. I warned against these back in 2012 (USA now in Orwellian society?), 2013 (It’s not paranoia: The USA government is engaged in massive surveillance on its citizens and others; Germany applauds Snowden. and Can ‘big brother’ watch you through your television?), and each year since.

Notice, for example, something posted on this page back in 2011:

Sadly, we are seeing this come to pass.

The USA no longer has the type of ‘freedom of religion’ or ‘freedom of speech’ its founders envisioned. Many, in and out of the government, are watching the internet with plans to deal with materials that they someday hope to silence. Their views are hauntingly like George Orwell’s book.

And while George Orwell did not write about private companies like Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube, they do not support the agenda or the morality of the Bible and have repeatedly been involved in surveillance and censorship. Europe and China have also been heavily involved in pushing internet monitoring, and sadly have learned some techniques on how to do that from the US government as well as from US companies.

The world is getting less tolerant of speech that does not conform to what governments find ‘acceptable’ or believes is ‘truth.’ Plus, it seems to place precious little value on the truth.

More surveillance and more censorship is expected–and it will get really bad in Babylonian Europe according to Bible prophecy:

15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666. (Revelation 13:15-18)

It was not possible to monitor all buying and selling when George Orwell wrote his novel. But as many societies head towards cashlessness, that is becoming more possible. Notice also the following:

An Australian woman whose name I will not mention recently sent me an e-mail informing me that the Australian government is trying to place “chips” in $100 bills to “monitor the cash supply and prevent people from hoarding cash.”

Whether Australia can do that yet or not, it is my view that the USA either can do that or eventually will. Notice something I wrote here in 2013:

As far as being totalitarian, this week the US Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, unveiled a plan to confiscate assets of people who might be involved in crime. Notice the following:

In many states, local police can seize money and property from suspected criminals, even if they are never charged or convicted. Allegations of abuse of this practice have led conservatives and liberals to join together to call for reform.

But this week Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that he instead wants to increase asset forfeiture, including a form called adoptive forfeiture where law enforcement agencies let the federal government step in when state law restricts it.

“We hope to issue this week a new directive on asset forfeiture—especially for drug traffickers,” Sessions said Monday in prepared remarks before the National District Attorneys Association. “With care and professionalism, we plan to develop policies to increase forfeitures. No criminal should be allowed to keep the proceeds of their crime. Adoptive forfeitures are appropriate as is sharing with our partners.”

The Constitution of the USA was partially designed to prevent what Attorney General Sessions is encouraging. Notice the fourth amendment to the US Constitution:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

The USA is not the place it once was. Jeff Sessions and others are violating the intent of the fourth amendment. As far as the statement “especially for drug traffickers” goes, let’s just say that is supposedly the reason for a lot of this, yet the US government makes non-drug traffickers suspects and makes them lose privacy, etc. because of already existing rules and regulations.

Of course, it is not just the USA with such practices. Canada, Europe, and the East all have issues as well. Notice something a reader sent me yesterday about China:

Users of the encrypted messaging service WhatsApp have reported disruptions in China, prompting censorship claims.

Many reported that voice messaging and pictures wouldn’t send without a virtual private network (VPN) to circumvent China’s censorship filters.

The seemed to be working normally on Wednesday morning, but there have been more interruptions since then.

And yes, we know that there will be massive government persecution (cf. Daniel 7:25).

Sadly, the type of society that George Orwell wrote about is taking shape. Many realize it, but do not know what do to about it. But many can be called now (see What Did Christ Mean – Many Are Called, But Few Are Chosen?).

Furthermore, there is good news as the Kingdom of God will come and replace the Orwellian (Revelation 13:16-18) system that we see being put together today.
