As expected, Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party won the latest election in Russia:

September 19, 2016

United Russia, backed by President Vladimir Putin, has won a majority in the country’s parliamentary election, far ahead of rival parties.

With 93% of the votes counted, the party has secured 54.2% of ballots and 343 seats in the 450-member parliament, officials say.

Mr Putin said his party had “achieved a very good result”, however the turnout was a record low of 47.8%.

The Communist Party and nationalist LDPR both secured just over 13%.

The party A Just Russia gained just over 6% of the votes. All four parties are loyal to Mr Putin and dominated the last parliament, or State Duma.

Mr Putin has enjoyed 17 years in power as either president or prime minister.

‘Utmost regret’

Voting irregularities were reported in several areas and the head of the election commission suggested that the results might be cancelled in three polling stations. …

Vote-rigging sparked big anti-government street protests after Russia’s last parliamentary election in 2011.

In the system of “managed democracy” crafted by the Kremlin, it was unthinkable that President Putin’s control of parliament would weaken, the BBC’s Steve Rosenberg reports from Moscow.

Mr Putin will be hoping that this time his personal popularity, combined with widespread apathy, will mean that Russians accept the result, he says.

The independent election monitoring group Golos said that “although the level of violations in this election campaign was lower than in 2011 there were many in the run-up to the voting”. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-37403242

As expected, the ruling United Russia Party will retain its absolute majority in Russia’s lower house, State Duma.

United Russia, led by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, a loyalist of President Putin, currently has 238 of 450 Duma seats and dominates the more than 80 regional parliaments. The party is likely to gain another 100 seats in the Duma.

The election for lawmakers comes 18 months ahead of the next presidential election. …

Analysts have seen the voting as a likely referendum on Putin’s expected 2018 run for re-election.

Putin and United Russia were riding a wave of nationalist support over Crimea and ongoing military actions, with state-run media ignoring critics or branding them as traitors.

Kremlin supporters have so far valued what is seen as tough leadership more than concerns about which direction that authority is taking Russia. http://www.voanews.com/a/putin-party-expected-to-gain-power-in-parliamentary-elections/3514215.html

Many Russians do like the fact that Crimea was annexed. Many also like that Vladimir Putin has been putting together his Eurasian Economic Union.

Speaking of the Eurasian Economic Union, here is something Stratfor reported about it a couple of days ago:

September 17, 2016

Analysis

Despite having been established less than two years ago, the Eurasian Economic Union is not a new concept. Russia has a lengthy history of pulling smaller neighbors into its orbit — the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union are proof of that. Though its integration projects varied in size and scope, all rested on the same fundamental principle that guided Moscow’s actions: Russia belongs to neither Europe nor Asia, and its periphery should not either. Instead, Russia’s greatest imperative has been to insulate itself from continental empires by creating one of its own, surrounding the Russian heartland with buffers on its western, eastern and southern flanks.

The Eurasian Economic Union is one way to do that, though the name belies the bloc’s true nature. It is not simply about economics, just as its predecessor, the Customs Union, was not simply about trade. Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan formed the Customs Union in 2010 with the intention of increasing cooperation among themselves in economics, politics and security. Though facilitating trade among the group’s members was part of its agenda, the bloc’s broader purpose was to become a comprehensive system equal to the European Union. The organization was also based on the unspoken assumption that Russia would become its undisputed leader. https://www.stratfor.com/analysis/why-eurasian-union-will-never-be-eu

There are 179 million people in the Eurasian Economic Union. Russia represents 143 million of them.  Thus, Russia clearly dominates the Eurasian Economic Union, in a manner reminiscent of how it dominated the old Soviet Union. Though, thus far, the Eurasian Economic Union is much more of a voluntary cooperative.

Anyway, with the United Russia party improving its position, this will further embolden Vladimir Putin to enlarge the Eurasian Economic Union.

Places like Mongolia and Serbia have recently expressed interest. Some think perhaps Uzbekistan will someday as well.

A confederation of nations including Russia, is prophesied to form, and the election results in Russia are consistent with that.

In the Book of Jeremiah, it is shown that a northern people (which most logically would seem to be Russia) will be part of the force that concerns and then eventually invades, end time Babylon (which will be a European power):

50:41 “Behold, a people shall come from the north,
And a great nation and many kings
Shall be raised up from the ends of the earth
.
42 They shall hold the bow and the lance;
They are cruel and shall not show mercy.
Their voice shall roar like the sea;
They shall ride on horses,
Set in array, like a man for the battle,
Against you, O daughter of Babylon.

43 “The king of Babylon has heard the report about them,
And his hands grow feeble;
Anguish has taken hold of him,
Pangs as of a woman in childbirth…”(Jeremiah 50:41-43).

3 O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal…6 from the far north and all its troops–many people are with you (Ezekiel 38:3,6).

Thus, the European empire (the “daughter of Babylon”) is to be destroyed by a northern (apparently Russian led) force. And probably one that cooperates with nations in the East, as well as maybe Iran, and possibly the Ukraine. (While the fulfillment of Ezekiel 38 is later, the fact that it refers to the peoples of the FAR NORTH shows that there is a power further north than the final European King of the North of Daniel 11). Notice that a people from the north (Russia in this case) will be part of a confederation of many kings raised up from the ends of the earth.  These “ends of the earth” kings would seemingly have to include Asian nations such as India and China, which while not currently part of the Eurasian Union, are already involved with many military and trade agreements with Russia, hence by extension have some connection to the actual Eurasian Union.

In Daniel, we see that the final King of the North, who is European (see also Can You Prove that the Beast to Come is European?), is concerned about a confederation to its north and east:

44 But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. 45 And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him. (Daniel 11:44-45)

It is the Eurasian nations that are north and east of Europe. Daniel tells of a Eurasian confederation.

Notice also that the Bible shows Babylon tied together with birth pains/pangs to a group from a far country:

1 The burden against Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.
2 “Lift up a banner on the high mountain,Raise your voice to them;Wave your hand, that they may enter the gates of the nobles. 3 I have commanded My sanctified ones; I have also called My mighty ones for My anger–Those who rejoice in My exaltation.” 4 The noise of a multitude in the mountains, Like that of many people! A tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together! The LORD of hosts musters The army for battle. 5 They come from a far country, From the end of heaven–The LORD and His weapons of indignation,To destroy the whole land. 6 Wail, for the day of the LORD is at hand!It will come as destruction from the Almighty. 7 Therefore all hands will be limp, Every man’s heart will melt, 8 And they will be afraid. Pangs and sorrows will take hold of them; They will be in pain as a woman in childbirth; They will be amazed at one another; Their faces will be like flames (Isaiah 13:1-8).

Thus, both the accounts in Jeremiah and Isaiah seem related to the same invaders. This is referring to an end time confederation that has a distance to travel–apparently a type of union of powers from the east including Russia, who is also the major power of the far north.

And this type of confederation is something that Vladimir Putin has repeatedly called for.   This is something he will continue to advocate and work towards.  And whether he leads it or not, it will form.

A northern confederation (that appears to be led by Russia and probably includes the far north and far east/Pacific coast portion of Asia) will destroy the European Babylon. The following passage may also apply:

9 For behold, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon
An assembly of great nations from the north country,
And they shall array themselves against her;
From there she shall be captured.
Their arrows shall be like those of an expert warrior;
None shall return in vain. (Jeremiah 50:9)

So, although many worry that Russia will be a major military threat to the USA, the reality is that the Bible indicates that it will be the Europeans that will receive a massive attack involving Russia. And perhaps not too many years from now.  And this is something that Vladimir Putin advocates and plans to continue to work towards making it happen.

Russia does have an end time role, and its election results seem consistent with it.
