LONDON — British officials say the United States submited a formal extradition request for Julian Assange, who was arrested in London by British police after officers were invited into the embassy of Ecuador to detain the WikiLeaks founder.

Britain’s Home Secretary, Sajid Javid tweeted shorty after the arrest, “Nearly seven years after entering the Ecuadorian embassy, I can confirm Julian Assange is now in police custody and rightly facing justice in the UK.”

He added, “No one is above the law.”

Assange, who took refuge in the embassy in 2012 while on bail in Britain over sexual assault allegations against him in Sweden, had become an increasingly unwelcome guest.

Last month, Assange’s internet access was cut off and he was forbidden from receiving visitors.

London Metropolitan police said they had a duty to execute a warrant for his breach of bail conditions more than seven years ago, and they were “invited into the embassy by the ambassador, following the Ecuadorian government’s withdrawal of asylum.” A police statement said he was “further arrested on behalf of the United States authorities.”

The 47-year-old Assange, sporting a unkempt white beard, waving a finger and shouting, was seen being carried out of the embassy by seven plain-clothes police officers and hauled into a police van.

Assange fled to the Ecuadorian Embassy while he was on bail as his lawyers mounted a legal action aimed at preventing him from being extradited to Sweden to face sexual assault allegations. He claimed if deported to Sweden, the United States would seek his extradition to face charges relating to WikiLeaks’s publication of hundreds of thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables and other classified documents.

U.S. State and Justice Department officials have never officially confirmed Assange has been charged with any offenses. But in November a clerical error in the court filing of a document in a case unrelated to his suggested criminal charges may have have been prepared. Legal analysts said the error was likely caused by prosecutors copying and pasting from sealed documents. …

Ecuador President Lenín Moreno tweeted, “In a sovereign decision Ecuador withdrew the asylum status to Julian Assange after his repeated violations to international conventions and daily-life protocols.”

The Ecuadorian leader had been deeply offended, say his aides, by WikiLeaks posting leaked Vatican documents. Key people in WikiLeaks visited Assange before and after the posting of the Vatican documents, Moreno complained.

Last October, Ecuador’s leader ordered Assange to refrain from making “political statements” that jeopardized Ecuador’s relations with other countries. Assange then sued in the Ecuadorian courts for a breach of his human rights, but his legal action failed.

In December, he was required pay for his food, medical care, and laundry.

In a formal statement the Ecuadorian leader said, “I announce that the discourteous and aggressive behavior of Mr. Julian Assange, the hostile and threatening declarations of its allied organization, against Ecuador, and especially the transgression of international treaties, have led the situation to a point where the asylum of Mr Assange is unsustainable and no longer viable.”

WikiLeaks complained on Twitter, “Ecuador has illegally [sic] terminated Assange political asylum in violation of international law.”

Assange arrest will likely trigger weeks and possibly months of court action, if the United States pursues his extradition.

After the arrest, British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt urged the public not to make a judgement about Assange’s innocence or guilt before he had his day in court. He did, however, stress that the man was “no hero” and had “tried to escape justice for a very long time.”

Assange, as one of the founders and editors of Wikileaks, a non-profit that publishes secret information, is known for the release of classified information regarding the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the US detention center in Guantanamo Bay, hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables, amongst other vast troves of information.

Washington has been seeking to prosecute Assange for espionage since 2010. He earned further ire in the US in 2016 for publishing a series of emails damaging to the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton, for whom he has a particular dislike dating back to her time as US Secretary of State. He said he received the emails from Russian intelligence officials. Snowden: Assange arrest a blow to press freedom

Edward Snowden, the former security contractor who leaked classified information about U.S. surveillance programs, says the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is a blow to media freedom.

“Images of Ecuador’s ambassador inviting the UK’s secret police into the embassy to drag a publisher of–like it or not–award-winning journalism out of the building are going to end up in the history books,” Snowden said in a tweet.

“Assange’s critics may cheer, but this is a dark moment for press freedom.”

Snowden was charged by the United States in 2013 of violating the country’s espionage act. He was granted asylum by Russia that year and the asylum has been extended until at least 2020. https://www.apnews.com/328522adb35b4445a3fb875d63fb0870

WikiLeaks got in hot water with the USA when it became concerned about the surveillance and similar tactics that the Obama Administration used. Also, its 2016 email releases were believed to have hurt Hillary Clinton’ chances to win the presidential election that Donald Trump ended up winning (see also WikiLeaks releases more–what about Obamagate? and Sanders being pressured to disavow Hillary Clinton endorsement after Wikileaks emails suggest rigged system; DNC chair resigns).

As far as tactics of the Obama Administration go, Wikileaks pointed to something that US Attorney General William Barr told a Senate Committee yesterday that he was going to investigate–that is, spying by the Obama Administration’s FBI on the Trump campaign. Notice also:

Attorney General William Barr has launched his own informal inquiry about the origins of the Russia investigation, he confirmed to senators on Wednesday.

Barr told members of a Senate Appropriations Committee panel that he wants to understand how and why key decisions were made about the counterintelligence investigation opened by the FBI in the summer of 2016.

He said he isn’t “putting a panel together” and the effort may not result in a criminal investigation or the finding of a crime. …

“I feel an obligation to make sure government power is not abused,” Barr said. “I think that is one of the principal roles of the attorney general.”

Alleged abuse of power and alleged bias by the FBI and DOJ have been long-standing themes of Trump and allies since special counsel Robert Mueller was commissioned to investigate whether Trump’s campaign colluded with the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

There are a lot of politics associated with Wikileaks and Julian Assange. I find it interesting that the president of Ecuador specifically mentioned Julian Assange’s involvement with leaking Vatican-related documents as a major reason to terminate his asylum. Wikileaks posted Vatican documents in 2010, which is before Julian Assange was granted asylum by Ecuador (see WikiLeaks Highlights Vatican’s Influence), but apparently for some reason, other Vatican-related leaks became a reason to terminate his asylum. The Vatican has a lot of international influence, and will have more (cf. Revelation 17).

There are various international ramifications of some of what Wikileaks has revealed.

Both the Snowden leaks and WikiLeaks have shown the Europeans that the USA does not trust Europe, considers Europe to be a second or third rate partner, has violated EU law, and that the USA has lied to Europe about this. The Europeans have documented proof now and will remember this. It would seem that this will be part of Europe’s justification to later successfully attack the USA, which it will per Daniel 11:39.

Because of the leaks, the Obama Administration promised to share its espionage methods with Europe as penance, if you will, for the information that  was released, plus promised to reduce espionage on Europe. By not spying as much on Europe, the USA will not be sufficiently aware of the disaster that will come to it once Europe is ready to attack. Furthermore, by teaching Europe how to better commit espionage, this will likely help set Europe up for getting the ability to monitor buying and selling (Revelation 13:16-18), and even more than that.

The leaks have shown the world that the USA does not have the moral high ground it has long claimed and this will not end up well for the USA.

In other UK-related world news, another temporary extension was granted for the UK’s exit from the European Union. While Theresa May had hoped the UK would be out by June 30, 2019, the EU has granted an extension until October 31, 2019:

Theresa May has accepted an offer from Brussels to extend the Brexit deadline to October 31. The delay could force the UK to take part in European elections unless it can pass a divorce deal through parliament.

The Brexit deadline was extended to October 31 after British Prime Minister Theresa May accepted an offer from the leaders of the European Union on Thursday.

European Council President Donald Tusk said the extension would allow the UK to “find the best possible solution.” …

May reacted to the extension by pledging to ensure that the UK could “leave as soon as possible.” She said she “sincerely regretted” the fact that she had not been able to persuade parliament yet to reach a deal.

“I know that there is huge frustration from many people that I had to request this extension,” May acknowledged.

May said her country could pass a Brexit deal in the first three weeks of May to avoid taking part in EU elections. “This decision enables us to do that,” May said. …

Tusk said the extension was as flexible as he expected, although shorter than he hoped. But ultimately, he warned the UK: “Please do not waste this time.”

Getting back to Julian Assange, some have speculated in the past that Donald Trump may pardon him.

Perhaps Julian Assange will cooperate with US Attorney General Barr. We will see.

But Europe will not pardon the UK for Brexit (cf. Daniel 8:24-25) nor the USA for various of its actions (cf. Daniel 11:39).
