The Washington Post (WP) reported the following:

5 reasons why hitting the debt ceiling would be disastrous

August 25, 2017

President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) are courting an economic catastrophe with a standoff over how to raise the debt limit.

Unless Trump and Congress pass a law raising the U.S. debt limit — a legal cap on how much the U.S. government is allowed to borrow — the Treasury Department will soon run out of money to pay its bills, triggering a first-in-modern-U.S.-history default that threatens to turn the world economy on its head. …

Here are five reasons that would cause global panic.

First, it would trigger a wild ride for stocks and bonds. Wall Street doesn’t like bad surprises. This would be a big one. It would be “unprecedented in the modern era,” says Shai Akabas, economic policy director at the Bipartisan Policy Center.  …

Second, America’s cheap funding source would end. The United States can borrow money at extremely low rates because there’s a fundamental belief around the world that America always pays its debts on time. That’s why America still has a top-notch AAA credit rating (at least from two of three main rating agencies). As soon as the United States actually defaults, investors would start suing the country, and they would almost certainly insist on much higher interest rates in the future.

It’s already happening. The fear of a potential default in October has sent America’s short-term bond yields (known as T-bills) much higher than usual. A similar spike happened in 2011 and 2013 when America also got close to its “X” date. It cost the United States hundreds of millions more in interest, according to a Federal Reserve study. If an actual default happens, taxpayers would end up with an even bigger bill (think billions more dollars, if not worse).

Third, real people won’t get paid. This is not a game. The Trump administration would have to either stop payments to everyone or they would have to pick who gets paid and who does not. That means deciding between bondholders, Social Security recipients, welfare recipients, companies that provide equipment to our military, people and businesses awaiting IRS tax refunds, etc. Someone won’t get their money. That could easily be a retiree in the United States or overseas, since about half of America’s debt is held by foreigners.

Fourth, America’s global power would decline. A default would be a major hit to America’s “soft power.” The U.S. dollar is the world’s reserve currency. People carry dollars and hold U.S. bonds all over the world because they believe America is their best and safest bet. A default would probably cause the value of the dollar to drop and global investors to shift some money out of U.S. assets. Even a short default could have long-lasting damage to America’s reputation. Other countries won’t be so quick to “buy American” down the road. And you can bet China, America’s largest foreign creditor, will be livid.

Fifth, a recession is possible. Yes, this is a dire scenario. …

As Barclays explains, “Failure to raise the debt ceiling would require an immediate cut in spending equal to about 3.5% of GDP. A contraction of federal spending of this magnitude, the risk of default, sovereign reputational risk, and negative consequences for confidence and private sector behavior would likely push the economy into a recession if the situation persisted.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/08/25/5-reasons-why-hitting-the-debt-ceiling-would-be-disastrous/?utm_term=.5788f3db4bf4

The USA is in more debt than any other nation in the history of the world.

And the solution advocated by most “experts”?

Increase the debt ceiling.

Now, let me state that I agree with the Washington Post that not raising the so-called debt ceiling soon will cause a variety of negative events to occur.

But the reality is that the Congress of the USA needs to change policies to reduce government spending to the point that the USA does not need to keep increasing its debt.

Yet, when it has serious discussions about that, the results have continued to be more debt.

I refer to the ‘debt ceiling’ as so-called because it keeps getting raised.

One does not repeatedly raise the ceiling in a building, yet the US government keeps raising its debt. The point of a debt ceiling was supposed to stop that from happening, but it has not.

Nor did ‘sequestration’ or the other ‘plans’ that the US Congress has come up with.

Short of national repentance, which I do not expect, the USA is doomed. The USA needs the Kingdom of God.

Notice some of what the Bible teaches about debt:

43 The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail. 45 Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you…47 “Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and gladness of heart, for the abundance of everything, 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything; and He will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you. 49 The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a nation of fierce countenance, which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young. 51 And they shall eat the increase of your livestock and the produce of your land, until you are destroyed; they shall not leave you grain or new wine or oil, or the increase of your cattle or the offspring of your flocks, until they have destroyed you. 52 They shall besiege you at all your gates until your high and fortified walls, in which you trust, come down throughout all your land; and they shall besiege you at all your gates throughout all your land which the LORD your God has given you (Deuteronomy 28:42-45,47-52)

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry…5 Indeed, because he transgresses by wine, He is a proud man… 6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases What is not his–how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’? 7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. 8 Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you (Habakkuk 2:3,5,6-8).

The above prophecy will be fulfilled at the time of the end (cf. “The message was true, but the appointed time was long…in the latter days, for the vision refers to many days yet to come,” Daniel 10:1,14). Daniel 8:19, 11:27,29,35 use the same Hebrew term for “appointed time” as Habakkuk 2:3, while Daniel 10, using a different term, ties the latter days to the time in Daniel 8:19. Habakkuk 2 was not fulfilled in its entirety anciently. Also, it makes little sense that Habakkuk would be directed towards the modern nation of Israel as it does not have enemy creditors. It must be a nation or group of nations with some prominence at the appointed time of the end.

The nation with the greatest debt of all time is the United States of America, and on a per capita basis the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has one of the highest. Despite posturing, sequestration, budget committees, government shut-downs, etc. that the USA is intent on increasing its total debt–this is unsustainable and cannot continue in perpetuity. The debt is much more dangerous than the predominant view that politicians in the USA publicly state.

The Congressional Budget Office sees increased debt for the DECADES it tried to project for (see CBO points to massive debt: Can the depth of a coming financial crisis be known?).

The Bible does not teach that raising debt ceilings is the answer. Destruction will come to the highly indebted nation of the USA.

What about Donald Trump?

Donald Trump may or may not help delay the day of reckoning for the USA (cf. Daniel 4:27), but it will happen.

Notice a statement from Donald Trump about debt:

I’m the king of debt. I love debt. (Egan M. Donald Trump: ‘I’m the king of debt.’ CNN, May 7, 2016)

Donald Trump also said:

I have borrowed, knowing that you can pay back with discounts. And I have done very well with debt. Now, of course, I was swashbuckling, and it did well for me and it was good for me and all that. …

Now we’re in a different situation with a country, but I would borrow knowing that if the economy crashed you could make a deal. And if the economy was good it was good so therefore you can’t lose. …

I don’t want to renegotiate the bonds, but I think you can do discounting. … I’m not even suggesting that we don’t borrow money at very low rates long term so we don’t have to worry about when they come due. (Kurtzleben D. Donald Trump’s Messy Ideas For Handling The National Debt, Explained. NPR, May 9, 2016)

Nobody knows debt better than me. I’ve made a fortune by using debt and if things don’t work out, I renegotiate the debt. Well, you go back and you say, ‘hey, guess what? The economy just crashed. I’m going to give you back half. (“Trump recession”? Presumptive GOP nominee fires back at Clinton. CBS, June 22, 2016)

It sounds like Donald Trump believes that debt is good and there is nothing wrong with defaulting or otherwise not intending to pay the total debt back. Other USA politicians have also basically suggested paying the debt back in inflated currency or something else other than the original value of the debt.

The Bible says the wicked have that attitude:

21 The wicked borrows and does not repay, But the righteous shows mercy and gives. (Psalms 37:21)

Donald Trump has also filed for bankruptcy four times—presumably to not pay back debt, while he claims a financial worth around $10 billion.

He may consider that to be ‘good business,’ but his practices and intents sound biblically immoral.

Yet he, the Federal Reserve, many politicians, and many in the mainstream press seem to love debt. The Bible teaches that leaders do not always lead properly:

12…Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths.” (Isaiah 3:12)

16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err, And those who are led by them are destroyed (Isaiah 9:16).

The end result of the coming massive financial crisis will be the END OF THE USA!

However, this will not happen this month, this year, or even during the first term of Donald Trump’s Administration.

While much of the debt is owed to nations such as China, Japan, and the Arab World, the Europeans have trillions of dollars invested in the USA–money they may be disappointed to have devalued, and actually the Europeans seem to hold the most US debt (see EU reportedly the largest holder of USA debt). Enough so that they may divide the land among themselves and other creditors (cf. Daniel 11:39; see also USA in Prophecy: The Strongest Fortresses).

While your nation probably will not repent (USA or otherwise), you can. Do not wait until it is too late. The fact that the debt ceiling remains an issue after all the years of debate about it should serve as a wake-up call that the end of the USA will be coming (Habakkuk 2:3,5,6-8; Deuteronomy 28:42-45,47-52).

Continually raising the debt ceiling and arguing about it will not stop the coming destruction of the USA.
