The Anglicans could have a split:

January 11, 2016

A schism in the worldwide Anglican Communion over homosexual rights and women clerics would be a failure but not a disaster, the spiritual head of Anglicans said on Monday at the start of a high-stakes meeting between conservative and liberal primates.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby will host the heads of the communion’s 37 other provinces around the globe for a week of talks to try and work out if and how they can stick together after more than a decade of bitter disagreements.

“Certainly I want reconciliation, but reconciliation doesn’t always mean agreement. In fact, it very seldom does. It means finding ways to disagree well and that’s what we’ve got to do this week,” Welby told BBC Radio 4.

The communion, which has around 85 million members in 165 countries, has been deeply divided over issues of gender and sexuality between liberal churches in North America and Britain and their conservative counterparts, especially in Africa. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-religion-britain-anglicans-idUSKCN0UP15I20160111

By ‘liberal’ this appears to be referring to people who do NOT believe what the Bible teaches about the role of women and that homosexuals must repent.

In the USA, the Episcopal Church less commonly known by its other official title, the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of Americais the United States-based member church of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The church calls for the full legal equality of gay and lesbian people. In 2015, the church’s 78th annual General Convention passed resolutions allowing the blessing of same-sex partnerships and approved two official liturgies to bless such unions. On the question of abortion, the church’s 26th Presiding Bishop, the Katharine Jefferts Schori, the first female archbishop in its history, adopted what she called a “nuanced approach.” The Episcopal Church ordains women and LGBT people to the priesthood, the diaconate, and the episcopate, despite opposition from several other communicants within the global Anglican Communion. Those who think that Protestants believe in sola Scriptura should realize that it is not just the Anglicans, but many Protestant groups that have turned their backs on what the Bible teaches on those subjects.

Of course, overall, the Anglican Church is becoming more irrelevant in the UK, the USA, and elsewhere.

But a split in it will tend to keep the ‘liberals’ further away from the Vatican.

In time, the Vatican will have arrangements with more groups, and likely better ties with some of the claimed more ‘conservative’ Protestants.  The Vatican is likely to accept militaristic steps against some of the nation of the more ‘liberal’ Anglicans, like the USA and UK.
