Parties dig in heels on Brexit: What will happen to the EU and UK?

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s latest maneuver to push through Brexit has been described by opponents as a “coup” and a “constitutional outrage.” For investors, it’s a warning sign: Ignore Brexit at your risk.
Johnson shook Britain out of its summer lull on Wednesday when he asked the Queen to suspend Parliament just days after it returns from its summer recess next week, and only weeks before the Brexit deadline on October 31.
Why it’s important: The move gives lawmakers less time to block a messy no-deal departure from the European Union. Johnson has said he will take the United Kingdom out of the bloc on October 31 with or without a deal to protect trade.

The European Union’s chief Brexit negotiator is warning British Prime Minister Boris Johnson he will not back down before the Oct. 31 departure date and make concessions just to break a deadlock and avoid a chaotic no-deal departure of the U.K.
Michel Barnier warned Thursday that “in all circumstances, the EU will continue to protect the interests of its citizens and companies, as well as the conditions for peace and stability on the island of Ireland.”
The border situation between the U.K.’s Northern Ireland and the EU’s Ireland remains the main sticking point to have an orderly withdrawal of Britain from the bloc. There are fears it could endanger the peace process on the island. https://www.apnews.com/38fce2910afa4af799c77362f84433b3
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly said that he will not negotiate with the EU over Brexit unless it first drops the Irish backstop (see TL: ‘Deal or No-Deal, Brexit Dooms the Euro’ and https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/aug/07/stop-catastrophe-no-deal-brexit-revoke-article-50). The EU has repeatedly said no (see also https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-49240809).
The UK and EU continuing to say no would result in what is called a no-deal or hard Brexit (though even then, some type of deals/understandings will be made/implemented).
The two sides also differ about the UK paying the EU without a deal:
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Sunday that if Britain leaves the European Union without a deal, it will no longer legally owe the 39 billion pound divorce bill agreed by his predecessor Theresa May. …
“I think what the entire European Union understands is that if we come out without a deal then…the 39 billion is no longer legally pledged,” Johnson told Sky News, when asked if he had told EU leaders this week he planned to withhold the money.

Britain will be expected to pay its £39bn Brexit divorce bill in full even if it leaves the EU without a withdrawal agreement, Brussels has said.
A European Commission spokesperson indicated that failure to pay could hamper the UK’s chances of negotiating a free-trade agreement with the remaining 27 nations after withdrawal, stating that the financial settlement was “essential” to getting the new relationship onto a good footing. 08/26/19 https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-no-deal-bill-boris-johnson-eu-trade-deal-european-commission-a9079111.html
In the event of an actual no-deal Brexit, the UK is of the opinion it may owe 7 -9 billion pounds, but the EU disagrees.
Boris Johnson disagrees and believes the UK would be better off keeping its money and investing it in itself.
Presuming that the UK does not pay the EU much (if anything) to depart, the EU is saying the lack of payment will harm future trade.
This will cause economic harm to both the UK and the EU.

To its great discredit, the Trump administration has been egging Johnson on to leave Europe without a deal. It has done so by making him the illusory promise of a speedy U.S.-UK free trade deal on the most favorable of terms for the UK.
Sadly, the chances are now high that the Trump administration will get the hard-Brexit that it has been wanting. But the chances are also very high that the Trump administration will come to regret its role in engineering that outcome. It will do so when it sees the immediate damage that a hard-Brexit will do to the UK and the negative spillover effects that a hard UK economic landing will have on a global economy that is already slowing down markedly.
As regular readers of this COGwriter Church of God News page are aware, for over a decade I have stated that the UK would get closer to the USA on trade and farther away from the EU (watch, for example, Trade Disputes: CCOG Warnings Are Coming to Pass and/or Trade Wars: Are COG warnings coming to pass?).
The UK will move closer to the USA on trade. Brexit is going to be a factor.
The UK will not have its economy totally destroyed by Brexit–though Brexit will cause various disruptions and problems. And Europe will one day want to ‘collect’ from the UK and USA because of Brexit and other matters.
The Bible looks to be pointing to the UK having prosperity before a coming European Beast power takes it over. The “king” below will be the coming European Beast, the “mighty” is a reference to the USA-UK military alliance, and the “many in their prosperity” is a reference to the Anglo-American nations (and the holy people is a reference to end time Christians):
23 “And in the latter time of their kingdom, When the transgressors have reached their fullness, A king shall arise, Having fierce features, Who understands sinister schemes. 24 His power shall be mighty, but not by his own power; He shall destroy fearfully, And shall prosper and thrive; He shall destroy the mighty, and also the holy people. 25 “Through his cunning He shall cause deceit to prosper under his rule; And he shall exalt himself in his heart. He shall destroy many in their prosperity. (Daniel 8:23-25a)
Now for that to happen, Europe will have to reorganize. And financial pressures will be a factor. Not getting the full hoped for departure payment from the UK, plus having trade barriers with the UK will be factors in harming the EU economy, for a time.
The reality is that Brexit will cause economic harm to the European Union.

Yes, the UK will have Brexit pain–but it would not be the only party negatively affected. The EU itself is subject to being severely damaged economically from how it may handle a no deal Brexit.
Of course, the EU has various advantages. It recently announced a massive trade deal with parts of South America (see EU’s Juncker essentially verified accuracy of 2008 COGwriter prediction on trade), And it is working on deals with many others around the world, plus it uses sanctions less than the USA does.
But it still will have problems, including internal ones (cf. Daniel 2:41-43).
The late Pastor General of the old Worldwide Church of God, Herbert W. Armstrong, had a view about economic matters and European unity. Here is something he said in a sermon on July 7, 1984:
And I can see now, the event that is going to trigger the formation of the reunification in Europe; the resurrection of the medieval Holy Roman Empire that we’ve been looking forward to that is prophesied to come…
But I believe that some event is going to happen suddenly just like out a blue sky that is going to shock the whole world and is going to cause the nations in Europe to realize they must unite! … Well now I think I can see what may be the very event that is going to trigger…that is the economic situation in the world…
The whole banking structure in the United States is a network all jointed together. But not only that, one nation has to deal with other nations and imports and exports. And so they have to have a means of transforming money from one nation to another. And so the banking structure is international and interwoven…
Now when the financial structure breaks down, all civilization is going to break down…
So, an economic or banking crisis is what Herbert W. Armstrong concluded would drive Europe to unite. Economic factors will be a reason that Europe will reorganize and put in place the Beast power.
The Bible shows that Europe will reorganize:
12 “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. (Revelation 17:12-13)
Brexit is adding more pressure for the EU to change and reorganize. And that will come to pass.
One day the European Beast power will arise and take actions that most of those in the UK (as well as USA and Canada) will not consider possible (cf. Daniel 8:24-25, 11:39; see also USA in Prophecy: The Strongest Fortresses).
A ‘no deal’ or ‘hard Brexit’ will impact the EU and the UK.
Yet, it will also tend to speed-up European resolve against the UK, its British-descended allies, and the USA.
