European lawmakers have endorsed the opening of talks with the EU Council on a controversial legal framework to establish block-wide mechanisms to expel illegal migrants, including the creation of \u2018return hubs\u2019 in third countries.<\/p>\n

The idea to create de facto detention facilities outside of the EU\u2019s borders to hold migrants deemed to have no right to stay has been opposed by rights groups and pro-migration political parties.<\/p>\n

Under the proposed Return Regulation, which is still in the early stages of the legislative process, people marked for deportation in the EU will be sent to overseas return hubs<\/em> rather than staying within the bloc as they await expulsion.<\/p>\n

Critics say the scheme is intended to disappear irregular migrants and failed asylum seekers into a \u201clegal black hole.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The proposed reform went to a plenary vote on Thursday after three left-wing parties, the S&D, the Greens\/EFA, and the Left, each filed requests for it. The groups sought to challenge a decision by the Civil Liberties Committee earlier this month, when it approved the proposed legislation to enter into interinstitutional negotiations.<\/p>\n

The attempt flopped, with 389 MEPs voting in favor of proceeding to the next stage of the legislative process with the proposal, 206 voting against, and 32 abstaining. https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/636442-eu-migrants-return-hubs\/<\/a><\/p>\n

EU Parliament approves controversial bill to increase migrant returns<\/h2>\n

MEPs approved a law enabling member states to build deportation centres outside the EU, endorsing talks with non-recognised third-country entities and imposing entry bans on returned migrants.<\/h3>\n

The European Parliament approved on Thursday a law aimed at speeding up the return of irregular migrants in larger numbers by building deportation centres outside the EU, alongside stricter rules reflecting a shift in political priorities as Europe pivots to the right.<\/p>\n

The law will also increase the legal detention period to up to two years and impose practically unlimited entry bans in the EU on the returned people.<\/p>\n

The \u201creturn regulation\u201d is considered crucial to increasing the return rate of people with no legal right to stay in the EU and is seen as the cornerstone of a fresh European push to crack down on irregular migration.<\/p>\n

What the EU is doing is consistent with what Donald Trump was doing in his first term by having migrants not enter the USA, but stay in Mexico.<\/p>\n

Now one country in the EU without major migrant issues is Hungary.<\/p>\n

It came up with an unusual policy.<\/p>\n

In 2015, Hungary built a border fence a couple of yards\/meters inside of its borders.<\/p>\n

It then essentially told potential migrants to stay in that area while their asylum or other immigrant claims were reviewed. This way, it technically met certain EU guidelines about letting asylum seekers in the country, but really kept them outside.<\/p>\n

With no access to food or services there, migrants quickly concluded it was too difficult to get into Hungary and chose easier nations.<\/p>\n

Hungary also has resisted EU pleas to take in migrants.<\/p>\n
