ROME (AP) \u2014 U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s attacks on Italy\u2019s premier have had an unintended consequence.<\/p>\n

After Trump questioned Italy\u2019s reliability as a wartime ally<\/a><\/span> and claimed Giorgia Meloni had groveled for his attention,<\/a><\/span> European leaders rallied to Meloni\u2019s side, thawing what had been a frosty relationship over her hard-right political roots.<\/p>\n

It is the latest example of how the often divisive American president<\/a><\/span> is helping to draw Europe closer together.<\/p>\n

European leaders are finding more reasons to coordinate on defense, tariffs<\/a><\/span> and foreign policy as they confront wars in Ukraine and Iran, a ballooning trade deficit with China, and threats<\/a><\/span> from Russia. That leaves Trump, who has often preferred to negotiate with European countries individually, with less ability to do so, analysts say.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the mainstream leaders realize that Europe is getting squeezed between China and America, and so, if not now, then when?\u201d said Sudha David-Wilp, vice president at the German Marshall Fund. \u201cThey need to act as a bloc in order to maintain Europe\u2019s place in the world.\u201d …<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s escalating attacks on Meloni \u2014 who called Trump\u2019s criticism of Pope Leo<\/a><\/span> \u201cunacceptable\u201d \u2014 helped shift the dynamic, prompting European leaders to rally around her.<\/p>\n

After all, they, too, have been on the receiving end of Trump\u2019s barbs<\/a><\/span>. …<\/p>\n

The changing rhetoric comes as elections approach, putting more focus on domestic issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis pushes everyone to consider a European horizon more than an international one,\u201d said Lorenzo Castellani, a political analyst and professor at Rome\u2019s LUISS University, https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/italy-europe-trump-meloni-iran-war-4567748bf998f158d99158068d978aad<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Leaders in the European Union want it to further unify and to rise up.<\/p>\n

There is also something referred to as the \u201claw of unintended consequences.\u201d There are consequences for the USA, Europe, and elsewhere that have and will occur because of Donald Trump\u2019s statements and actions.<\/p>\n

Consider, for one example, that after his reelection, Donald Trump stated that the United States needed to have Greenland for defense and economic purposes. \u2026<\/p>\n

Because of some of Donald Trump\u2019s statements, back in late 2015, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, former German Defense Minister, called Donald Trump \u201cthat blonde lunatic named Donald.\u201d[i]<\/a> And even though he did not like Donald Trump\u2019s reelection in 2024, he said it was good news in that it was a final wake up call for Europe to improve its own security and take other steps to protect itself because of his policies and possible actions.[ii]<\/a><\/p>\n

Furthermore, at a conference in 2025, Herr Guttenberg referred to \u201cbully Trump\u201d and said Europe needed to be achieve an independent military defense so that it no longer needs to dependent on the USA.[iii]<\/a> An unintended consequence of Donald Trump\u2019s presidency may be the rise of Barron Guttenberg.<\/p>\n

Europe will go in a direction that USA leaders, including its \u2018foreign policy experts,\u2019 do not comprehend (Daniel 11:39; Isaiah 10:5-11).<\/p>\n

When my wife and I were in Europe in late 2016, many of the Europeans we spoke to were essentially of the view that the USA is supposed to be the leader of the West, so how could it possibly elect Donald Trump? We were told this by Europeans from countries like Switzerland, Spain, and the Netherlands. European disdain for Donald Trump and how they perceive his leading of the USA is real. \u2026<\/p>\n

Some in Europe have long wanted to be independent of the USA. \u2026<\/p>\n

Donald Trump … upset them by being perhaps the best known non-UK supporter of Brexit.<\/p>\n

In an online interview on November 13, 2024, former Greek Minister of Finance, Yanis Varoufakis, asserted that:<\/p>\n

Donald Trump sees the European Union as a clear and present danger to the United States \u2026<\/p>\n

He has an agenda\u2026 essentially to make Brexit spread all over the European continent. [iv]<\/a><\/p>\n

Yanis Varoufakis also asserted that Donald Trump wants to break the European Union, so Europe needs to see Donald Trump as a threat and take action. [v]<\/a><\/a><\/p>\n

… Many in the USA do not seem to realize that once Europeans are spending more for their militaries, they will also expect to have more independence from the USA as to how military might will be used. \u2026<\/p>\n

While Donald Trump seems to believe that his policies are best for the United States, notice some unintended consequences of them: \u2026<\/p>\n
