I made a post back in 2009, about Canada considering closer ties to the European Union in order to be less reliant on the USA (see\u00a0Canada Looking to the EU<\/a>).<\/p>\n

In the past year and a half, Canada’s Prime Minister has taken several steps to become closer to Europe:<\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday said he was pursuing unprecedented closeness with the European Union to\u00a0reduce its dependence<\/a>\u00a0on its\u00a0economically hostile neighbor<\/a>, but not a membership with the bloc.<\/p>\n

“We’re not looking to become a member of the European Union,” Carney told reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival.<\/p>\n

“What we are looking \u2014 and will begin discussions for \u2014 is a unique \u200balliance between Canada and the European Union,” he said. “We share the same values, we have the same priorities and \u200bwe have very complementary strengths.”<\/p>\n

Carney’s clarification came after a\u00a0report by the\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/em> claimed he was exploring whether Canada could become an “associate member” of the bloc. The newspaper reported that the EU was open to the idea of granting Canada associate membership \u2014 a status it would have to create for the North American nation. …<\/p>\n

The remarks precede the Canadian prime minister’s scheduled trip to France this week.<\/p>\n

In Strasbourg, France, Carney will become the first head of government to attend the “State of the European Union” address before delivering his own speech at the European Parliament.<\/p>\n

His visit is a “tremendous symbol,” said Tobias Cremer, a European lawmaker from\u00a0Germany<\/a>\u00a0and the main sponsor of a March resolution calling for stronger EU-Canada cooperation.<\/p>\n

“Canada has many of the resources that Europe is very much short of, whether it’s in terms of energy, whether it’s rare earths (and) raw minerals,” Cremer said.<\/p>\n

Canada is already<\/a>\u00a0the first non-EU Nation to join the bloc’s\u00a0defense procurement program,<\/a>\u00a0while Carney was involved in\u00a0Canada joining the Eurovision Song Contest<\/a> for 2027. https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/canada-seeks-unique-alliance-with-eu-carney-says\/a-79254541<\/a><\/p>\n

Carney\u2019s European pivot comes after months of increasingly hostile trade relations with Washington. In August, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed\u00a050 percent tariffs<\/a>\u00a0on a range of Canadian goods, including cars, alcohol and dairy. That prompted Ottawa to\u00a0retaliate<\/a>\u00a0and eventually suspend trade talks between the two countries, after what Carney called \u201cunfair\u201d last-minute U.S. demands.<\/p>\n

Trump has also repeatedly needled Ottawa over Canadian sovereignty \u2014 from calling the country a\u00a0potential 51st state<\/a>\u00a0to ordering Lake Ontario to be\u00a0renamed<\/a>\u00a0\u201cLake America\u201d for U.S. federal use.<\/p>\n

Since becoming Prime Minister, Mark Carney has pushed Canada towards closer relationships with the European Union as well as the UK. A major part of the motivation for this has been statements and policies of Donald Trump and his Administration.<\/p>\n

Canada is in a precarious position these days and Donald Trump seems willing to try to cause Canada a lot of economic pain to get it to accede to his demands. Canada’s economy is highly dependent upon the USA’s economy, not the other way around.<\/p>\n

That said, one of the unintended consequences of Donald Trump’s statements and policies has been to get allies to question purchasing weaponry from the United States.<\/p>\n
