We do not pursue zero-sum deals. Notably, he said the &#8220;nomenclature&#8221; would be for Brussels to discuss and decide.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Canada welcomes this ambition. And I will tell you, polling shows that an overwhelming majority of Canadians support much closer ties with Europe,&#8221; he said in Strasbourg.<\/p>\n<p>Carney portrayed an ever-closer EU-Canada alliance as a &#8220;beacon for other democracies&#8221; This was also a term the BRICS meeting chose earlier this week, which I basically interpreted to mean the ability to function well while resisting USA pressures (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/prophecy\/brics-in-india-does-resilience-mean-resisting-pressures-from-the-usa\/\">BRICS in India: Does \u2018Resilience\u2019 mean resisting pressures from the USA?<\/a>)&#8211;and that is what Mark Carney seems to also be trying to do.<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump is not pleased with this associate member of the EU idea:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>17 September 2026<\/p>\n<h2>How did Trump respond to Canada&#8217;s EU associate membership idea?<\/h2>\n<p>In comments to reporters on Wednesday, Trump said the idea could become a &#8220;hostile act.&#8221; He threatened to impose sanctions on the EU in response.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If they do that, if I think it&#8217;s at all a hostile act, I will put very serious tariffs or stop trading with Europe on many things,&#8221; Trump told reporters en route to an event in North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>The US president also described the prospect of Canada joining the EU as &#8220;laughable.&#8221; &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Washington&#8217;s transatlantic ties have also suffered under Trump, most notably after the\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/european-leaders-call-trump-greenland-rift-a-wake-up-call\/a-75689623\">US president&#8217;s push to take control of the Arctic island of Greenland<\/a>, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>The EU was also hit by Trump&#8217;s wide tariffs, as were most countries worldwide, but the two sides reached a\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/european-parliament-approves-us-trade-deal-to-lower-tariffs\/a-77577033\">trade agreement to bring them down<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/trump-threatens-eu-with-further-sanctions-over-canada\/a-79299548\">https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/trump-threatens-eu-with-further-sanctions-over-canada\/a-79299548<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-text text-[length:var(--dimension-typescale-body-l)] text-[var(--color-text-primary)] leading-[1.6] mt-5 md:mt-[1.875rem]\" data-testid=\"plain-text-block\">President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0pulled out one of his favorite words as he threatened retaliation if the European Union were to admit Canada as an associate member.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-text text-[length:var(--dimension-typescale-body-l)] text-[var(--color-text-primary)] leading-[1.6] mt-5 md:mt-[1.875rem]\" data-testid=\"plain-text-block\">Trump told reporters Wednesday that he might respond with \u201cserious tariffs\u201d if Canada were to become integrated with the 27-member EU to a degree that he perceived would be hostile to the U.S. amid a trade war with its northern neighbor. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-text text-[length:var(--dimension-typescale-body-l)] text-[var(--color-text-primary)] leading-[1.6] mt-5 md:mt-[1.875rem]\" data-testid=\"plain-text-block\">\u201cCanada\u2019s been a terrible trade partner,\u201d\u00a0Trump\u00a0told reporters at the airport in Charlotte, North Carolina, when asked about the proposal. \u201cIf I think it\u2019s at all a hostile act, I will put very serious tariffs or stop trading with Europe on many things,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-text text-[length:var(--dimension-typescale-body-l)] text-[var(--color-text-primary)] leading-[1.6] mt-5 md:mt-[1.875rem]\" data-testid=\"plain-text-block\">Trump left open the possibility that he would accept the arrangement if he believed it was made with \u201ca good intention,\u201d but warned that the U.S. could otherwise impose \u201cvery heavy tariffs on Europe.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/09\/16\/trump-threatens-to-impose-serious-tariffs-on-europe-if-canada-joins-eu-as-associate-member-01081525\"> https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/09\/16\/trump-threatens-to-impose-serious-tariffs-on-europe-if-canada-joins-eu-as-associate-member-01081525<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The President of the European Union Parliament has welcomed the idea of Canada being an associate member of the EU and has even suggested adding Australia and New Zealand:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"c-article-redesign-title\">Australia and New Zealand could follow Canada into associated EU membership, Metsola tells Euronews<\/h2>\n<p>17 September 2026<\/p>\n<p>European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has told Euronews that countries including Australia and New Zealand could follow Canada in becoming \u201cassociate members\u201d of the European Union as like-minded nations seek closer ties. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Metsola described the proposed status as a third way between full EU membership and candidate status.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are countries with which we want to deepen our relationship,\u201d Metsola said. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The EU already has trade agreements with both countries, providing a potential starting point for closer cooperation. A similar relationship has been proposed with Canada, which signed a comprehensive trade agreement with the EU in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the technicalities of what associate membership would look like, Metsola acknowledged that talks are still at an early stage, while pointing to deeper trade relations, access to critical raw materials and common regulations on issues that \u201clike-minded\u201d countries care deeply about, such as social media and the protection of minors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2026\/09\/17\/australia-and-new-zealand-could-follow-canada-into-associated-eu-membership-metsola-tells-\">https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2026\/09\/17\/australia-and-new-zealand-could-follow-canada-into-associated-eu-membership-metsola-tells-<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Australia is highly involved with the USA related to military alliances. As it is unlikely that Australia believes that the EU can protect it, it would seem to be very hesitant to pursue something like this considering the risks. Yet, both Australia and New Zealand are very concerned about trade and would like to have more trade with the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>Since becoming Prime Minister, Mark Carney has pushed Canada towards closer relationships with the European Union as well as the UK. A major part of the motivation for this has been statements and policies of Donald Trump and his Administration.<\/p>\n<p>Here is something I posted about this on March 18, 2025:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Canada is in a precarious position these days and Donald Trump seems willing to try to cause Canada a lot of economic pain to get it to accede to his demands. Canada&#8217;s economy is highly dependent upon the USA&#8217;s economy, not the other way around.<\/p>\n<p>That said, one of the unintended consequences of Donald Trump&#8217;s statements and policies has been to get allies to question purchasing weaponry from the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; Canada, consider that the Bible prophesies that the time will come when the USA (Manasseh below) will turn against its British-descended allies (Ephraim below), including Canada, and vice-versa:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"mb-4 hidden pb-5 dark:bg-ramones md:block\">\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-nowrap justify-center\">\n<div id=\"Ri5l2pmmk5cfevdbH1\" class=\"flex\">\n<div id=\"Ri5l2pmmk5cfevdb\" class=\"flex\" data-google-query-id=\"CIH_4enK-IsDFaLPuAgdbGEFog\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"style3\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">21 Manasseh shall devour Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh; Together they shall be against Judah. Lamentations 1:1-2).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Notice the one who was \u201cgreat among the nations\u201d will be conquered by friends, who will become enemies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The USA was prophesied to be \u201cgreat\u201d in Genesis 48:19 and is considered by international sources to be great among the nations of the world today. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Donald Trump has been a polarizing figure and has offended many &#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">His misstatements, name calling, exaggerations, and negotiating strategies show that he is not always honest. This is not good (Proverbs 29:2; Psalm 15:1-4). His bragging statements, etc. are consistent with those warned about for the last days in 2 Timothy 3:1-6.
