US President <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-president-donald-trump-russia-ukraine-israel-gaza-tariffs-trade-war\/t-19434433\">Donald Trump<\/a> said the deal would give Washington permanent responsibility for Greenland\u2019s security, and would address\u00a0what he called American strategic concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen confirmed that an agreement is expected to be signed in the coming days to enhance security in the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/arctic\/t-19003556\">Arctic<\/a> and North Atlantic. The announcement follows months of controversy, during which Trump repeatedly raised the possibility of taking over Greenland. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/what-did-trump-really-gain-from-the-greenland-deal\/video-79338809\">https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/what-did-trump-really-gain-from-the-greenland-deal\/video-79338809<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1tik00t e1qjd5lc0\">Donald Trump drops demands to own Greenland, but the harm has been done<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-1xjkmih e6h2z500\">A revised defence pact with Denmark and Greenland is a modest improvement, but annexation threats were a costly blunder<\/h3>\n<p><span data-caps=\"initial\">T<\/span><small>HE ARCTIC<\/small> is a safer place for America and its allies today. Due credit must go to President Donald Trump, a self-styled man of peace. He has, after all, lifted the shadow of imminent invasion from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/briefing\/2026\/01\/21\/donald-trumps-grab-for-greenland-makes-no-sense\" data-analytics=\"in_body:link_1:para_1\">Greenland<\/a>, the vast and hard-to-defend island that guards <small>NATO<\/small>\u2019s high north. In the longer term a new defence agreement announced by the Trump administration, Denmark and Greenland on September 18th represents a modest advance on previous treaties. It will make it easier for America to strengthen its military presence on the island, and to control encroachment on Greenlandic soil by China, Russia and other adversaries. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/international\/2026\/09\/19\/donald-trump-drops-demands-to-own-greenland-but-the-harm-has-been-done\">https:\/\/www.economist.com\/international\/2026\/09\/19\/donald-trump-drops-demands-to-own-greenland-but-the-harm-has-been-done<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As the first article headline suggests, the US really did not gain much, if anything, it already did not essentially have.<\/p>\n<p>As the second article\u2019s headline states, damage has been done.<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump&#8217;s threats and pressures have STRONGLY upset the Europeans and many others related to this. And basically for nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The US could have negotiated new terms with Denmark without the bullying rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p>Just because Donald Trump brags about this, there are real costs for how he and his Administration went about it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">These have been and will be more unintended consequences of Donald Trump&#8217;s statements and policies.<\/p>\n<p>Related to Greenland, Donald Trump, and Europe, here is something I posted here in January 2025:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Donald Trump\u2019s foreign policy statements have unsettled many\u2014in the USA as well as foreign nations. He is believed by many to be more unpredictable than Richard Nixon. Many have rightly pointed out that he often acts as a bully.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Greenland<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is also something referred to as the \u201claw of unintended consequences.\u201d There are consequences for the USA, Europe, and elsewhere that have and will occur because of Donald Trump\u2019s statements and actions.<\/p>\n<p>Consider, for one example, that after his reelection, Donald Trump stated that the United States needed to have Greenland for defense and economic purposes. Not only did that offend the governments of Denmark and Greenland, the Danish government then announced that it would greatly increase the amount of money it would spend on the defense of Greenland.<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On January 7, 2025, Donald Trump refused to rule out military or economic actions to acquire Greenland.<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a> The next day, European leaders warned they would not tolerate an attack on Greenland and that the continent of Europe was strong.<a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[iii]<\/a>\u00a0&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The Bible teaches about a great power who will be destroyed by its friends, who become enemies (Lamentations 1:1-2)\u2014some statements by Donald Trump are pushing \u201cfriends\u201d (NATO allies) into being enemies. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The USA will be attacked by \u201cfriends\u201d consistent with the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><sup>1\u00a0<\/sup>How lonely sits the city<br \/>\nThat was full of people!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">How like a widow is she,<br \/>\nWho was great among the nations!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The princess among the provinces\u00a0Has become a slave!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0She weeps bitterly in the night,<br \/>\nHer tears are on her cheeks;<br \/>\nAmong all her lovers<br \/>\nShe has none to comfort her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">All her friends have dealt treacherously with her;<br \/>\nThey have become her enemies. cf.
