{"id":125,"date":"2007-09-27T04:38:49","date_gmt":"2007-09-27T12:38:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/church-history\/feast-of-tabernacles-around-the-world-1980s\/"},"modified":"2007-09-27T04:51:55","modified_gmt":"2007-09-27T12:51:55","slug":"feast-of-tabernacles-around-the-world-1980s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/church-history\/feast-of-tabernacles-around-the-world-1980s\/","title":{"rendered":"Feast of Tabernacles Around the World: 1980s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\">By <a href=\"\/cogwriter.htm\" title=\"Who is COGwriter?\">COGwriter<\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The Churches of God normally have over one hundred\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"\/feast.htm\" title=\"Feast of Tabernacles\">Feast of Tabernacles&#8217;<\/a> sites in various places around the world every year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">I began to attend the Feast of Tabernacles in 1977.\u00a0\u00a0 My first feast was at Squaw Valley, California, with an attendance of around 10,000 (all\u00a0attendance figures will be from my\u00a0memory of estimated attendance), and this was when I saw Garner Ted Armstrong in person.\u00a0 \u00a0In 1978, I went to Fresno, California, with an attendance of around 7,000.\u00a0 In 1979, I went to Tucson, Arizona for the feast, with an attendance of nearly 12,000\u00a0and this is when I saw <a href=\"\/herbertwarmstrong.htm\" title=\"Who Was Herbert W. Armstrong?\">Herbert W. Armstrong <\/a>in person and met Stan Radar.\u00a0 In 1980, I attended the feast in Big Sandy, Texas and slept in a small tent&#8211;it rained a lot and this was quite wet&#8211;about 7,000 may have attended there that year.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In 1981, this was the first feast I did not drive to, it was Lihue, Hawaii, with about 1,500 in attendance&#8211;this was the first time my wife and I were married and attended the same Feast site.\u00a0 In 1982, we went to Anchorage, Alaska with about 500 in attendance.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u00a01983 was the first feast for either of us outside of the USA, as well as the first feast that we began to take slide pictures.\u00a0 We went to Hoogeveen, Netherlands (all of my wife&#8217;s grandparents came to the USA from the Netherlands).\u00a0 About 500 attended there that year.\u00a0 We wrote a list of things that were different there compared to the USA. Here are two photos from that feast:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/netherlandswindmill.gif\" alt=\"Netherlands Windmill\" title=\"Netherlands Windmill\" \/>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" src=\"\/netherlandscanal.gif\" alt=\"Netherlands Canal\" height=\"155\" style=\"width: 220px; height: 155px\" title=\"Netherlands Canal\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Windmill and canal near Hoogeveen, Netherlands, 1983<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In 1984, we went to Sri Lanka for the feast.\u00a0 About 100 or so attended.\u00a0 Sri Lanka was so different from the USA that we thought that perhaps we should write a list of what was the same as in the USA as that would have been a fairly short list :).\u00a0 Here are two photos taken at that feast:<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" src=\"\/srilankavillage.gif\" alt=\"Village in Sri Lanka\" height=\"164\" style=\"width: 220px; height: 164px\" title=\"Village in Sri Lanka\" \/>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" src=\"\/srilankafruit.gif\" alt=\"Fruit Stand in Sri Lanka\" height=\"160\" style=\"width: 220px; height: 160px\" title=\"Fruit Stand in Sri Lanka\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Below is the Riverina hotel where church services for the Feast of Tabernacles in 1984 was held:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" src=\"\/riverinahotel.gif\" alt=\"Riverina Hotel \" height=\"158\" style=\"width: 220px; height: 158px\" title=\"Riverina Hotel \" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In 1985, we went to Durban, South Africa.\u00a0 About 1,000 were there.\u00a0 Below is a South African village and a picture of the building services met at in Durban:<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" src=\"\/southafricavillage.gif\" alt=\"South African Village\" height=\"165\" style=\"width: 220px; height: 165px\" title=\"South African Village\" \/>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" src=\"\/southafricadurban.gif\" alt=\"Durban, South Africa\" height=\"157\" style=\"width: 220px; height: 157px\" title=\"Durban, South Africa\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In 1986, we went to Pasadena, California for the Feast.\u00a0 We did not take slides, but should we find the photos taken, perhaps they will be added.\u00a0 One thing that puzzled me in 1986, was the fact that I learned that J. Tkach (Sr.) generally did not go anywhere for the Feast of Tabernacles.\u00a0 Later, of course, he and his administration minimized the necessity to observe God&#8217;s festivals.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In 1987, we went to Rotorua, New Zealand for the Feast.\u00a0 About 1200 of so attended there that year.\u00a0 We stayed at the Geyserland Hotel where we saw geysers and boiling mud everyday.\u00a0 The city has a sulfur smell, which when you are there a while, you get used to.\u00a0 Below is the view from our hotel room as well as a countryside photo taken:<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" src=\"\/rotoruageysers.gif\" alt=\"Rotarua Geysers and Mud\" height=\"152\" style=\"width: 220px; height: 152px\" title=\"Rotarua Geysers and Mud\" \/>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" src=\"\/sheep.gif\" alt=\"Sheep Grazing on New Zealand Countryside\" height=\"165\" style=\"width: 220px; height: 165px\" title=\"Sheep Grazing on New Zealand Countryside\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In 1989, we went to the south Pacific nation of Fiji.\u00a0 About 200 or so attended that year, including Roderick C. Meredith, now of the <a href=\"\/ylcg.htm\" title=\"Why the Living Church of God?\">Living Church of God:<\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" src=\"\/fijimichael.gif\" alt=\"Michael in Fiji\" height=\"332\" style=\"width: 220px; height: 332px\" title=\"Michael in Fiji\" \/>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fijircmeredith.gif\" alt=\"Dr. Roderick C.
