COGwriter<\/a><\/p>\n Is “Big Brother” watching you?\u00a0 Well security expert Jacob Applebaum claims that the United States NSA is watching in at least 13 ways, including several that people would not normally think of as possible:<\/p>\n LONDON<\/strong> – A well-known privacy advocate has given the public an unusually explicit peek into the intelligence world’s tool box, pulling back the curtain on the National Security Agency<\/a>‘s arsenal of high-tech spy gear.<\/p>\n Independent journalist and security expert Jacob Appelbaum on Monday told a hacker conference in Germany that the NSA could turn iPhones into eavesdropping tools and use radar wave devices to harvest electronic information from computer even if they weren’t online.<\/p>\n Appelbaum told hundreds of computer experts gathered at Hamburg’s Chaos Communications Conference that his revelations about the NSA’s capabilities “are even worse than your worst nightmares.”…Appelbaum’s claims – supported by what appeared to be internal NSA slideshows – still caused a stir.<\/p>\n One of the slides described how the NSA can plant malicious software onto Apple Inc.’s iPhone, giving American intelligence agents the ability to turn the popular smartphone into a pocket-sized spy.<\/p>\n Another slide showcased a futuristic-sounding device described as a “portable continuous wave generator,” a remote controlled device which – when paired with tiny electronic implants – can bounce invisible waves of energy off keyboards and monitors to see what is being typed even if the target device isn’t connected to the Internet.<\/p>\n A third slide showcased a piece of equipment called NIGHTSTAND, which can tamper with wireless Internet connections from up to 8 miles away. http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nsa-can-spy-on-offline-computers-wirelessly-expert-jacob-applebaum-says\/<\/a><\/p>\n Security researcher Jacob Appelbaum revealed what he calls \u201cwrist-slitting depressing\u201d details about the National Security Agency\u2019s spy programs at a computer conference in Germany on Monday where he presented previously unpublished NSA files.<\/p>\n Appelbaum is among the small group of experts, activists and journalists who have seen classified United States intelligence documents<\/a> taken earlier this year by former contractor Edward Snowden…<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cBasically the NSA, they want to be able to spy on you. And if they have ten different options for spying on you that you know about, they have 13 ways of doing it and they do all 13. So that\u2019s a pretty scary thing,\u201d<\/em> he said…<\/p>\n \u201cBasically their goal is to have total surveillance of everything that they are interested in,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201cThere really is no boundary to what they want to do. There is only sometimes a boundary of what they are funded to be able to do, and the amount of things they are able to do at scale they seem to just do those things without thinking too much without it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThey would be able to break into this phone, almost certainly, and turn on the microphone,\u201d<\/em> Appelbaum said at one point as he re-inserted the battery into his mobile device. \u201cAll without a court, and that to me is really scary.\u201d<\/em> Indeed, classified files shown later during his presentation revealed a device that for $175,800 allows the NSA or another license client to construct a fake cell tower than can allow officials to eavesdrop on texts and talks alike.<\/p>\n \u201cThey replace the infrastructure they connect to. It\u2019s like replacing the road that we would walk on and adding tons of spy gear,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201cAnd they do that too!\u201d…<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cIf the Chinese, if the Russians if people here wish to build this system, there is nothing to stop them,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201cThe NSA has in a literal sense retarded the process by which we would secure the internet because it establishes a hegemony of power \u2014 Their power in secret to do these things.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThis strategy is undermining the internet in a direct attempt to keep it insecure,\u201d<\/em> one of Appelbaum\u2019s slides read…<\/p>\n \u201cYou can\u2019t hide from these things, and thinking that they won\u2019t find you is a fallacy,\u201d<\/em> said Appelbaum…<\/p>\n According to Appelbaum, it\u2019s likely that it\u2019s not just a coincidence that the NSA can infiltrate iPhones with ease. In one document he saw, he said the NSA \u201cliterally claim that any time they target an iOS device, that it will succeed for implantation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cEither they have a huge collection of exploits that work against Apple products \u2014 meaning they are hoarding information about critical systems American companies product and sabotaging them \u2014 or Apple sabotages it themselves,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n Other products made by the likes of Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor and Samsung all contain vulnerabilities as well, according to those documents, and the secret software used by the NSA and others to exploit them are available for free to properly-credentialed agencies.<\/p>\n \u201cEverything that the United States government accused the Chinese of doing \u2014 which they are also doing, I believe\u2014we are learning that the US government has been doing to American companies,\u201d<\/em> Appelbaum said. \u201cThat to me is really concerning, and we\u2019ve had no public debate about these issues.
