Ukraine sent in commandos to eliminate some barricades in Sloviansk, Ukraine:<\/p>\n

Many pro-Russia rebels have been killed, injured and arrested in the Ukrainian government offensive in the eastern city of Sloviansk, acting President Oleksandr Turchynov has said.<\/p>\n

But, in a statement, he said the operation in the rebel-held city was not going as quickly as hoped.<\/p>\n

Rebels earlier shot down two Ukrainian army helicopters, killing a pilot and a serviceman.<\/p>\n

Russia has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.<\/p>\n

Moscow has said the use of the Ukrainian army against its own people is “leading Ukraine to catastrophe”.<\/p>\n

The situation in Sloviansk remains unclear, with Kiev earlier saying that half the city was “under control” of Ukrainian units. \u00a0http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-27259614<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Russia had issued a warning earlier today:<\/p>\n

Russia has warned Kiev of \u201ccatastrophic consequences\u201d if it cracks down on pro-Moscow<\/a> rebels continuing to seize official buildings in eastern regions.<\/p>\n

The caution came as Ukraine<\/a> reintroduced military service for young men, moved to expel a Russian military attach\u00e9 for alleged spying, and accused anti-government activists of planning explosions during major holiday events next week.<\/p>\n

The crisis continues to deepen a rift between Moscow and the West, with Nato\u2019s deputy secretary general Alexander Vershbow<\/a> saying last night \u201cthe Russians have declared Nato<\/a> as an adversary, so we have to begin to view Russia . . . as more of an adversary than a partner\u201d.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Russia\u2019s foreign ministry expressed \u201cextreme concern\u201d at reports that Kiev intended to launch a security operation in eastern areas, where protesters including gunmen have seized administrative buildings in about a dozen locations.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch irresponsible and aggressive actions . . . could lead to catastrophic consequences,\u201d the ministry warned, and urged Kiev and its western allies \u201cnot to make criminal mistakes\u201d by \u201cusing force against the Ukrainian people\u201d. \u00a0http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/world\/europe\/russia-warns-ukraine-against-crackdown-on-rebels-1.1780875<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the past, Russia has indicated that it would take steps if military actions escalated and involved the government in Kiev against ‘ethnic Russians” in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The Kiev government has apparently decided to take that risk.\u00a0 For many reasons, Russia may be motivated to act more decisively now.<\/p>\n

This is not going well for the people of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

At least 31 people were killed in a fire that broke out amid clashes between pro-Russia demonstrators and government supporters in the southern Ukrainian city of Odessa.<\/p>\n

The port city has not been a deadly flashpoint in the unrest that has plagued the eastern section of Ukraine during the tug-of-war between Russia and the West.<\/p>\n

But violence erupted when protesters calling for a united Ukraine marched through the streets and were met by pro-Russian activists, Kiev-based UNIAN news agency and the Ukrainian online newspaper Ukrainskaya Pravda reported. \u00a0http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/storyline\/ukraine-crisis\/ukraine-clashes-turn-deadly-dozens-killed-fire-n95916<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
