COGwriter<\/a><\/p>\n Today marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal:<\/p>\n August 15, 2014<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Friday marks the centennial of the opening of the Panama Canal, an engineering marvel that permanently changed world trade and still plays an essential role in global commerce and promises to keep doing so in the future. …<\/p><\/blockquote>\n America’s control over the canal, as the U.S. State Department website delicately puts it, “eventually became an irritant to U.S.-Panamanian relations.” In 1977, President Jimmy Carter signed an agreement to cede the waterway’s control to Panamanian authorities, an event that finally took place on Dec. 31, 1999.\u00a0 http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/panama-canal-turns-100-and-gets-ready-for-more\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n In June 1902, the U.S. Senate voted in favor of pursuing the Panamanian option, provided the necessary rights could be obtained. On January 22, 1903, the Hay\u2013Herr\u00e1n Treaty was signed by United States Secretary of State John M. Hay and Dr. Tom\u00e1s Herr\u00e1n of Colombia. It would have granted the United States a renewable lease in perpetuity from Colombia on the land proposed for the canal. This is sometimes misinterpreted as the “99-year lease” because of misleading wording included in article 22 of the agreement.The treaty was ratified by the U.S. Senate on March 14, 1903, but the Senate of Colombia did not ratify it. Phillipe Bunau-Varilla, chief engineer and significant shareholder of the French canal company, told President Theodore Roosevelt and Hay of a possible revolt by Panamanian rebels who aimed to separate from Colombia, and hoped that the United States would support the rebels with U.S. troops and money. Roosevelt changed tactics, promising support for the separation of Panama from Colombia.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n On November 2, 1903, U.S. warships blocked sea lanes for possible Colombian troop movements en route to put down the rebellion. Panama declared independence the next day, November 3, 1903. The United States quickly recognized the new nation. On November 6, 1903, Phillipe Bunau-Varilla, Panama’s ambassador to the United States, signed the Hay\u2013Bunau-Varilla Treaty, granting rights to the United States to build and indefinitely administer the Panama Canal Zone and its defenses…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n After World War II, U.S. control of the canal and the Canal Zone surrounding it became contentious; relations between Panama and the United States became increasingly tense…negotiations toward a settlement began and resulted in the Torrijos\u2013Carter Treaties. On September 7, 1977, the treaty was signed by President of the United States Jimmy Carter and Omar Torrijos, de facto leader of Panama. This mobilized the process of granting the Panamanians free control of the canal so long as Panama signed a treaty guaranteeing the permanent neutrality of the canal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The treaty led to full Panamanian control effective at noon on December 31, 1999, and the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) assumed command of the waterway. The Panama Canal remains one of the chief revenue sources for Panama. Before this handover, the government of Panama held an international bid to negotiate a 25-year contract for operation of the container shipping ports located at the canal’s Atlantic and Pacific outlets. The contract was not affiliated with the ACP or Panama Canal operations and was won by the firm Hutchison Whampoa, a Hong Kong\u2013based shipping interest owned by Li Ka-shing.(Panama Canal, Wikipedia, viewed 08\/15\/14)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The Panama Canal changed international shipping and trade. More than 1 million boats and ships have gone through its famous locks.<\/p>\n The USA built the canal, but ultimately lost it.\u00a0 While officially the Panama Canal Authority runs it, the reality is that it is basically controlled by a Hong Kong company with ties to China.\u00a0 Panama has been working on an expansion of the canal–a European contractor is building a third new set of locks. The Chinese themselves are also working on trying to get another canal across the nearby nation of Nicaragua (it is backed by Chinese billionaire Wang Jing).<\/p>\n The late Herbert Armstrong believed the previous attainment of various “sea gates,” including the Panama Canal, helped demonstrate the identity of the modern descendents of Joseph as he wrote:<\/p>\n Genesis 22:17.\u00a0 To Abraham God said: “That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies.”<\/span><\/p>\n And again, the inspired prophetic parting blessing upon Rebekah, leaving her family to become the wife of Isaac: “And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them” (Gen. 24:60). Earlier we quoted the correct Fenton translation: “… and your race shall possess the gates [plural] of its enemies.” As explained there, the “gates” of enemy nations are the strategic SEA GATES of entrance to or exit from these nations. Although all wealth comes from the ground, prosperity and affluence on a national scale always have come also by industry and COMMERCE. And commerce between nations has been transacted almost altogether by the SEA- LANES of the world \u2014 by SHIPS, and, within a continent, by railroads. How significant, then, that Robert Fulton operated the first steamboat in 1803 \u2014 precisely when Britain and America suddenly began to MULTIPLY in national wealth! And also that it was the nineteenth century that saw the development of the railroads! As explained before, since the birthright pertains to NATIONS, the “GATE” of our enemies would be such passes as Gibraltar, Suez, Singapore, the Panama Canal, etc. Britain and America came into possession of every such major “gate” in this world! So we MUST be modern Israel. World War II hinged on these “gates.” They had become not only strategic passes, but the world’s greatest fortifications. But today, we have lost most of them, most recently, the Panama Canal \u2014 and it appears that soon Gibraltar, too, will be lost. Why? Notice Genesis 39:2, 23: “The Eternal was with Joseph, and he was a PROSPEROUS man ….the Eternal was with him, and that which he did, the Eternal made it to PROSPER.” And God did prosper Joseph’s descendants, Britain and America, with the fabulous birthright promised Joseph’s sons! (Armstrong HW. The United States And Britain In Prophecy. 1980) For many years, the major sea gates of the world were possessed\/controlled by the United States (Panama Canal and certain locations in the Pacific ocean) and the British Empire (Straits of Malacca, Singapore, Suez Canal, Bab el Mandeb, Strait of Hormuz, Simon\u2019s Town\/Cape of Good Hope, Malta, etc.). And while that is no longer the case for many of them, they seem to have been prophesied to be taken away for disobedience as well (c.f. Deuteronomy 28)\u2014and certainly these nations have disobeyed the God of Abraham, as well as actually have lost many of those gates. Thus, it seems logical to conclude that the remaining “sea gates” that the UK has such as Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands will be separated from UK control. Spain directly, or perhaps, through the EU (or some other European confederation) indirectly, will force out British control over Gibraltar.<\/p>\n At risk of some duplication, notice a prophecy about what was told to the wife of Isaac, plus another in the Book of Deuteronomy:<\/p>\n “Our sister, may you become The mother of thousands of ten thousands; And may your descendants possess The gates<\/strong> of those who hate them” (Genesis 24:60).<\/p>\n 43 The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail. 45 Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed…47 \u201cBecause you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and gladness of heart, for the abundance of everything, 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything; and He will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you.<\/strong> 49 The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a nation of fierce countenance, which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young. 51 And they shall eat the increase of your livestock and the produce of your land, until you are destroyed; they shall not leave you grain or new wine or oil, or the increase of your cattle or the offspring of your flocks, until they have destroyed you. 52 They shall besiege you at all your gates until your high and fortified walls, in which you trust, come down throughout all your land; and they shall besiege you at all your gates throughout all your land which the LORD your God has given you<\/strong> (Deuteronomy 28:42-45,47-52).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n We in the Church of God have been teaching for decades that the United Kingdom and USA would ultimately lose many of their sea gates–we believe they possessed them because of blessings from God and would lose them because of blatant disobedience.<\/p>\n The USA no longer controls the Panama Canal.\u00a0 Although one can choose to believe that a Hong Kong-based company is “neutral,” the reality is that China influences Hong Kong and technically is officially scheduled to get it back in the future.\u00a0 The USA military used to guard the Panama Canal and now others can affect the canal and potentially negatively impact the USA.<\/p>\n USA is losing its edge in many areas, and now we see the Chinese and Europeans taking more of the lead in the Panama Canal and related projects.\u00a0 The final time of the Gentiles is coming (Luke 21:20-24) and this does not bode well for the USA (cf.
