The sweeping victory of Taiwan\u2019s opposition party<\/a> in local elections this weekend has thrown a wrench into what looked liked a successful path towards resolving one of the world\u2019s longest and thorniest political disputes.<\/div>\n

For six years, mainland China and the self-ruled island of Taiwan<\/a> have been drawing closer economically. Both sides have been removing the easiest barriers to integration with an eye to eventually finding a peaceful solution to Taiwan\u2019s status….<\/p>\n

Concerns about the mainland\u2019s growing influence crystallised during the Sunflower movement<\/a> this spring, when student activists stormed the legislature to block a pact that would have freed up trade in services, for fear it would increase the island\u2019s economic dependence on its much larger rival.<\/p>\n

China wants Taiwan, and Taiwan does not want to be part of the People’s Republic of China. I suspect that all the issues with Hong Kong firmed up the opposition to the PRC in Taiwan.<\/p>\n

That being said, Bible prophecy indicates that Taiwan will cooperate more fully with mainland China in the future.\u00a0 Taiwan has been able to maintain its separate status, at least partially, because of the support it gets from the USA military. But, since the time will come when the USA will be no more (e.g. Daniel 11:39), Taiwan will end up in a different situation.<\/p>\n

Until then, we will see political ups and downs in terms of the relationship between China and Taiwan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
