{"id":3104,"date":"2010-02-11T06:59:26","date_gmt":"2010-02-11T14:59:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/?p=3104"},"modified":"2010-08-03T08:43:31","modified_gmt":"2010-08-03T16:43:31","slug":"carnaval-madri-gras-the-bible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/religious-news\/carnaval-madri-gras-the-bible\/","title":{"rendered":"Carnaval, Madri Gras, &#038; the Bible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/bible.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"283\" \/><em><br \/>\nCarnaval is Not Endorsed in the Bible<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"\/cogwriter.htm\">COGwriter<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Next Tuesday marks Mardi Gras and the end of the season known as \u201ccarnaval\u201d (which is several days to many weeks long depending upon the culture).\u00a0 Essentially the &#8220;carnival season&#8221; is a time of having parties and indulging in practices that certain <a href=\"\/catholic.htm\">Catholics<\/a> believe that they should give up on <a href=\"\/lent.htm\">Ash Wednesday for the duration of Lent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is one report about it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Although the origins of Carnaval are shrouded in mystery, some believe <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">the fest began as a pagan celebration<\/span><\/strong>of spring\u2019s arrival sometime during the Middle Ages. The Portuguese brought the celebration to Brazil in the 1500s, but it took on a decidedly local flavor by adopting Indian costumes and African rhythms. The word itself probably derives from the Latin <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201c<em><strong>carne vale<\/strong><\/em>,\u201d<\/span> or <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201c<strong>goodbye meat<\/strong>,\u201d<\/span> a reference to the <strong>Catholic tradition<\/strong> of giving up meat (and other fleshly temptations) during Lent\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">(<a title=\"http:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/travel\/ci_7883824\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/travel\/ci_7883824\">http:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/travel\/ci_7883824<\/a>). <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The origens of this are not a complete mystery as the sixth edition of the <em>Columbia Encyclopedia<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Carnival communal celebration, especially the religious celebration in Catholic countries that takes place just before Lent&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">One of the first recorded instances of an annual spring festival is the <strong>festival of Osiris in Egypt<\/strong>; it commemorated the renewal of life brought about by the yearly flooding of the Nile. In Athens, during the 6th cent. BC, a yearly celebration in honor of the god Dionysus was the first recorded instance of the use of a float.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">It was during the <strong>Roman Empire<\/strong> that carnivals reached an unparalleled peak of civil disorder and licentiousness. The major Roman carnivals were the Bacchanalia, the <strong>Saturnalia<\/strong>, and the Lupercalia. In Europe the tradition of spring fertility celebrations persisted well into Christian times, where carnivals reached their peak during the 14th and 15th cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">Because <strong>carnivals are deeply rooted in pagan superstitions<\/strong> and the folklore of Europe, the Roman Catholic Church was unable to stamp them out and finally accepted many of them as part of church activity (<a title=\"http:\/\/www.encyclopedia.com\/doc\/1E1-carnival.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.encyclopedia.com\/doc\/1E1-carnival.html\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;\">http:\/\/www.encyclopedia.com\/doc\/1E1-carnival.html<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Essentially, this is a pagan holiday that some Catholics originally adopted as a\u00a0compromise to keep members in certain areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Despite its origins, many <a href=\"\/catholic.htm\">Catholics<\/a>, <a href=\"\/orthodox.htm\">Eastern Orthodox<\/a>, and others will participate in the revelries associated with carnival.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Essentially Carnaval is a time when some believe that they can indulge to excess as they will need to give up some of those excesses if they observe a time called Lent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Mardi Gras is French for &#8220;Fat Tuesday&#8221; and is the day before <a href=\"\/lent.htm\">Ash Wednesday<\/a>.\u00a0 Some seem to believe that they need to excessively indulge prior to a religious season of some type of abstinence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The popularity of carnaval has spread from outside of Brazil, Venice, and New Orleans as many look for any excuse for a party.\u00a0 And it would seem that most who attend such parties are not that interested in actually its &#8220;religious&#8221; connection.<\/p>\n<p>As an example of its growth, here are just two news items of carnaval parties from other areas in the USA:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>Ready for blastoff!
