Control of the news media is an instrumental, key feature to any totalitarian government. In contrast, the primary reason this experiment known as\u00a0the United States has lasted so long under relatively free conditions is due to the\u00a0preservation of free speech (and press) via\u00a0the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. …<\/p>\n

Nowhere in there do I see an exception for \u201cconspiracy theories,\u201d but apparently Constitutional scholar Barack Obama has an alternative interpretation.

Pittsburgh (AFP) \u2013 President Barack Obama on Thursday decried America\u2019s \u201cwild, wild west\u201d media environment for allowing conspiracy theorists a broad platform and destroying a common basis for debate.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Recalling past days when three television channels delivered fact-based news that most people trusted, Obama said democracy require citizens to be able to sift through lies and distortions.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to have to rebuild within this wild-wild-west-of-information flow some sort of curating function that people agree to,\u201d<\/strong> Obama said at an innovation conference in Pittsburgh.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cThere has to be, I think, some sort of way in which we can sort through information that passes some basic truthiness tests and those that we have to discard, because they just don\u2019t have any basis in anything that\u2019s actually happening in the world,\u201d<\/strong> Obama added.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThat is hard to do, but I think it\u2019s going to be necessary, it\u2019s going to be possible,\u201d he added.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe answer is obviously not censorship, but it\u2019s creating places where people can say \u2018this is reliable\u2019 and I\u2019m still able to argue safely about facts and what we should do about it.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The above may sound good on a superficial level to people with zero critical thinking skills, but even the most elementary\u00a0analysis exposes it as the\u00a0obvious and dangerous attack on free speech that it is. Let\u2019s zero in on\u00a0a few things he said in closer detail.<\/p>\n

He describes the media environment as the \u201cwild, wild west.\u201d<\/em> Kind of sounds like an environment in which people are free to say, publish or record whatever they want, and let the chips fall where they may. Seems consistent with the first amendment to me.<\/p>\n

He notes that there\u00a0needs to be\u00a0\u201csome sort of way in which we can sort through information that passes some basic truthiness tests and those that we have to discard.\u201d <\/em>This sounds good on the surface because, after all, who doesn\u2019t want truth? The problem lies in the fact that governments can and do lie all the time about stuff of monumental significance. Let\u2019s take the Iraq war for example. As I discussed\u00a0in August\u2019s post,\u00a0Questioning Hillary\u2019s Health is Not Conspiracy Theory<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Of course, the\u00a0New York Times\u00a0rendering judgment on\u00a0those pushing\u00a0conspiracy theories would be downright hilarious if it weren\u2019t so sad. For example, the paper itself exhibited no such restraint when it came to peddling U.S. government conspiracies about Iraq in the run up to one of the most inhumane, unnecessary and destructive foreign policy blunders in American history. In fact, the paper was ultimately so embarrassed by its own behavior, it issued a statement in 2004 titled,\u00a0FROM THE EDITORS; The Times and Iraq<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Meanwhile, there were millions of people in the \u201cwild west\u201d of opinion making yelling and screaming\u00a0that the government was misleading the public about Iraq in order to go to war. So who got it right, the New York Times<\/em>, or the wild, wild west?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If Obama had his way, those people who asserted\u00a0that the public was being mislead into the Iraq war would have been dismissed as\u00a0\u201cconspiracy theorists\u201d not worth paying attention to since they refused to agree with government \u201cfacts.\u201d Obama\u2019s position is such an obvious authoritarian slippery slope, one has to ask why\u00a0he would dare go so far.<\/p>\n

Actually, what is happening now is that we are getting closer to the time of the coming ‘famine’ of the word of God.\u00a0 Various ones in the government of the USA are sadly helping set the stage for this.<\/p>\n
