G20: Angela Merkel sketches vision of France-German led Europe<\/h2>\n

Germany is reorienting itself away from the US and the UK and toward France. Chancellor Merkel made that abundantly clear in a major speech to parliament about the EU’s future and next week’s G20 summit in Hamburg.<\/p>\n

Germany and France will take a greater role in leading the European Union<\/a>, and Europe must take a greater role in leading the world. That would be one way of summarizing Angela Merkel’s speech to the German parliament on Thursday. …<\/p>\n

Significantly, Merkel spoke of “France and our other partners in the EU.” She said that she had specifically talked with French President Emmanuel Macron about a “medium-term plan for deepening the EU and the euro zone.” She also added that German and French interests were “connected in the closest possible way.”<\/p>\n

The German chancellor argued that the EU was recovering from its economic crisis, with all 27 remaining members recording growth<\/a> and lower unemployment<\/a>. The UK, Merkel suggested, was no longer at the center of European plans.<\/p>\n

“Our priority is to prepare for our own future within the European Union, regardless of the Brexit,” Merkel said.<\/p>\n

The chancellor also reiterated the need, against the backdrop of tensions with the United States under Donald Trump, for the EU to take more responsibility<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Europe has no choice but to increasingly take its fate in its own hands,” Merkel said. …<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The chancellor also took aim at Trump’s national chauvinism, saying that economic protectionism<\/a> “isn’t an option” …<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Merkel underscored the theme of European solidarity by meeting in Berlin after her speech with the leaders of the other EU countries taking part in the G20 summit as well as the presidents of the European Commission and the European Council. Angela Merkel is pushing for European leadership of the West. This is something that we in the Church of God have said Europe would work for.<\/p>\n

I have long written that Germany and France would be supportive of the final Beast of the Sea of Revelation 13:1-10.<\/p>\n

My position here, while consistent with that held by the old Radio and Worldwide Church of God, differs from some items promoted by the Living Church of God<\/a>:<\/p>\n

French Influence in Europe Waning<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bible prophecy reveals the Israelite-descended nations will go into captivity under the European \u201cbeast\u201d power at the time of the end. But, will France be inside<\/em> or outside<\/em> the \u201cbeast\u201d power? The increasing EU frustration with France will be interesting to watch. (French Influence in Europe Waning. Whom Will France Support? <\/strong><\/p>\n

As core nations in the EU seek to form a European military, Britain and France are formulating other plans. …<\/p>\n

For decades the Church of God has taught that a European Beast power composed of 10 nations or kings will emerge at the end of the age and play a dominant role in the world (Revelation 17 and 18). Bible prophecies indicate that most Israelite nations will not be a part of this empire (Ezekiel 23:9, 22-27; Hosea 11:5-7; Amos 5:3). The question is, will France support Europe or join with \u201cbrother\u201d England? Time will tell. (Whom Will France Support? TW News & Prophecy, November 11, 2013).<\/p>\n

Will France Exit the EU?<\/strong> …<\/p>\n

While France may not leave the EU in the immediate future, the Front National\u2019s win highlights changing political winds in France and the growing unrest with the Brussels-centered EU. Some experts suggest this recent local election win is just the \u201ctip of the iceberg\u201d…<\/p>\n

For decades the Church of God has understood that the end-time European Beast power will be ten kings or nations who give their power to that Beast (see Revelation 17). Bible prophecies indicate that most Israelite-descended nations will be overcome by that Beast and not be part of it<\/strong> (Ezekiel 23:9, 22-27; Hosea 11:5-7; Amos 5:3). Merkel promised a renewed drive with France\u2019s president, Emmanuel Macron, to deepen cooperation within the bloc and the eurozone. She said that far from being weakened by Britain\u2019s vote to quit the EU, the bloc would remain united.<\/p>\n

With the fault lines multiplying, Merkel\u2019s western European allies arrived in Berlin on Thursday to draw up a common battle strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201cMerkel has called a summit between Europeans because there is a problem with the relationship with Trump,\u201d said a diplomatic source, speaking on condition of anonymity. It\u2019s necessary to ensure European cohesion because within the G20<\/a>, it\u2019s complicated.\u201d …<\/p>\n

Trump will head to Warsaw for a summit of central and eastern European leaders likely to include Hungary\u2019s hardline prime minister, Viktor Orb\u00e1n, a day before the G20, which threatens to deepen divisions.<\/p>\n

The German foreign minister, Sigmar Gabriel, said it was important for Europe to face up to the US confidently. \u201cWe do not want to forcefully separate the US from Europe. But what we don\u2019t want either is to appear like an appendage of US policies,\u201d he said. https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/jun\/29\/merkel-vows-to-put-climate-change-at-centre-of-g20-talks<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As the above indicates, Angela Merkel is not the only one who wants Europe to not have to listen to the USA.<\/p>\n

Notice something that came out after Donald Trump was elected:<\/p>\n

America Has Abdicated Its Leadership of the West<\/strong><\/p>\n

For 100 years, the United States was the leader of the free world. With the election of Donald Trump, America has now abdicated that role. It is time for Europe, and Angela Merkel, to step into the void.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Even history sometimes leans toward pathos. In January 2017, when Donald Trump is sworn in as the 45th president of the United States, the American Age will celebrate its 100th birthday \u2014 and its funeral.<\/p>\n

The West was constituted in its modern form in January 1917. World War I was raging in Europe at the time and in Washington, D.C., President Woodrow Wilson told his country that it was time for Americans to take responsibility for \u201cpeace and justice.\u201d In April he said: \u201cThe world must be made safe for democracy.\u201d He declared war on Germany and sent soldiers to Europe to secure victory for the Western democracies \u2014 and the United States assumed the leadership of the Western world. It was an early phase of political globalization.<\/p>\n

One hundred years later: Trump. \u2026<\/p>\n

What will happen to the West, to Europe, to Germany without the United States as its leading power? Germany is a child of the West, particularly of the United States, brought to life with American generosity, long spoon-fed and now in a deep state of shock. The American president was always simultaneously our president, at least a little, and Barack Obama was a worthy president of the West. Now, though, we must come to terms with a lack of Western leadership. \u2026<\/p>\n

America was long the benchmark for the West. But if Trump governs as he promised he would during the campaign, the land of the free will abdicate its role as leader of the free world. Notice that Der Spiegel<\/em>: is stating that if Donald Trump keeps his promises, it will be Europe\u2019s turn to<\/strong><\/em> lead the West.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump has concerned, and offended, the Europeans.<\/p>\n

But what about the UK and USA?<\/p>\n

As far as the European leadership is concerned, with the Brexit vote the UK has abandoned Europe and its obligations. Europe will negotiate with the UK related to its departure from the European Union, but overall it considers that the UK is basically irrelevant.<\/p>\n

Europe has been incensed by Donald Trump and has used him as a foil for the ambitions of many there to have Europe rise up on its own.<\/p>\n

Now this idea that Europe should sustain itself is not a new idea.<\/p>\n

Many in Europe have long wanted that.<\/p>\n

\n

Why Europe Secretly Roots For Donald Trump<\/h3>\n

September 21, 2016<\/p>\n

European Parliament President Martin Schulz warned<\/a> recently that Trump \u201cwould be a problem not just for the EU but for the whole world.\u201d<\/p>\n

And yet, in some quarters at least, the Trump cloud carries with it at least a sliver of silver lining. <\/strong>No European politician will say so publicly, but to some on the Continent, Trump presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for emancipation from American influence.<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n

To varying degrees, America-bashing has been a mainstay on both the Right and Left of European politics for decades. <\/strong>From GMOs to Guantanamo, from the drone war to the death penalty, European politicians have rarely had difficulty finding reasons to rail against the U.S.<\/p>\n

In fact, the evils of U.S. influence is one of the few things that European politicians from nearly every slice of the political spectrum can agree upon. In Germany, for example, one is just as likely to see an \u201cAmi Go Home\u201d (Ami<\/em> is German slang for American) poster at a rally for the Left party as at a gathering of the far-right\u00a0Alternative for Germany.<\/p>\n

Just as the EU served as a convenient whipping post for British politicians of all stripes in recent decades, culminating in the Brexit vote, the U.S. serves a similar purpose for many European politicians. Even those who profess a deep commitment to the transatlantic relationship often can\u2019t resist using the U.S. as a rhetorical foil to deflect attention from their own vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n

Just last week, Jean-Claude Juncker, hailing the Commission\u2019s crackdown on Apple\u2019s Irish tax penalty in his State of the Union speech<\/a>, declared: \u201cEurope is not the Wild West.\u201d Anyone listening knew that \u201cWild West\u201d means America. \u201cWe are not the United States of Europe,\u201d Juncker added, to applause from the assembled MEPs. \u201cWe are much more diverse in Europe and stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most Europeans at the center of Europe\u2019s political spectrum genuinely fear the consequences of a Trump victory and a weakening of the Transatlantic relationship. But others smell an opportunity too good to be allowed to pass.<\/p>\n

As long as moderate politicians like President Barack Obama or U.S. Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton occupy the White House, anti-American politicians will find it difficult to turn their rhetoric into reality. A Trump presidency would force a rethink. …<\/p>\n

The birth\u00a0of an EU army:<\/strong> The U.S. has guaranteed Europe\u2019s security for decades through NATO, effectively placing a giant security umbrella over most of the Continent. That reliance doesn\u2019t sit well with everyone.<\/p>\n

Though Europe doesn\u2019t have anywhere near the military resources of the U.S. (American military spending accounts for about 75 percent of the NATO total), politicians in France and Germany are eager to get to work on a European defense force<\/a>. The idea isn\u2019t new and faces myriad hurdles, mainly the question of how to finance it on Europe\u2019s shoestring budget.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, a Trump victory would give the initiative a major boost. As with the trade deal, Trump would likely be happy to let the Europeans fend for themselves. He has made no secret of his distaste<\/a> for Europe\u2019s reliance on the U.S. military. Conversely, few Europeans would welcome Trump as commander-in-chief. If he wins, proponents of a European army would finally have the compelling argument they\u2019ve been looking for. http:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/why-europe-is-secretly-rooting-for-donald-trump-us-election-2016\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I have been saying since 2015 that Donald Trump’s rise would encourage the Europeans to arm and for over two years that his rise would encourage Europe to unify. This is more and more starting to happen.<\/p>\n

The current Anglo-American dominated world order is in the process of being replaced. Germany’s Chancellor wants that, as do many others. According to biblical prophecies, it will come to pass.<\/p>\n
