The world is starting to become upset by the fact that China controls 95% or so of certain \u201crare earth elements\u201d(like neodymium <\/em>) and has dramatically reduced their export:<\/p>\n

China’s draconian export curbs on rare earth minerals needed by the rest of the world for frontier technologies is escalating into a serious diplomatic and trade clash with the United States and other leading powers. The “official” reason for the ban is apparently for environmental protection.\u00a0 However, since China does not have a stellar environmental record, most discount that reason.<\/p>\n

The real reason seems to be that China may need all it produces, and that control over this resource gives China a lot of power and influence.<\/p>\n

The USA recognizes a problem here and has taken several steps, including hopefully having a mine open in California in 2012 (see Rare Earth Elements, China, and 2012<\/a>).<\/p>\n

But despite the protests and steps by the Americans, the Chinese still have major control and expects to for the foreseeable future.\u00a0 This does not bode well for the USA.<\/p>\n
