Before being appointed prime minister, Sarksyan, 63, did a 10-year stint as president. Under a constitutional change, most state powers are now invested in his new role.<\/p>\n

Armenia\u2019s prime minister, Serzh Sargsyan, has said he will resign after days of large street protests against him, according to a statement posted on his website.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe street movement is against my tenure. I am fulfilling your demand,\u201d the statement said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of uniformed soldiers had joined anti-government demonstrators earlier on Monday on the 11th consecutive day of protests over an alleged power grab by Sargsyan.<\/p>\n

Prior to Sargsyan\u2019s resignation, and apparently yielding to opposition pressure, police released Nikol Pashinyan, a protest leader and opposition MP who had been arrested alongside hundreds of demonstrators on Sunday in an attempt to crush the demonstrations. Until his release, Pashinyan\u2019s whereabouts had been unknown.<\/p>\n

\u201cNikol! Nikol!\u201d chanted protesters draped in Armenian-flags as they marched down a central avenue in the country\u2019s capital, Yerevan. Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in the city\u2019s Republic Square at the weekend in one of the country\u2019s largest demonstrations in years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the last time I will speak to you as the head of the government,\u201d Sargsyan\u2019s statement said. \u201cNikol Pashinyan was right. I was wrong.\u201d https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/apr\/23\/serzh-sargsyan-resigns-as-armenias-prime-minister-after-protests<\/a><\/p>\n

Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan has resigned, state television reports.<\/p>\n

Mr Sargsyan’s resignation follows 11 days of protests against him by opposition supporters, who accuse him of clinging to power after serving the maximum 10 years as president.<\/p>\n

“The street movement is against my tenure. I am fulfilling your demand,” he said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Mr Sargsyan was appointed prime minister last Tuesday after two consecutive terms as president. http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-43868433<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The news has been reporting protests in Armenia over the past several months, and these protests intensified in the past week or so.<\/p>\n

Zero Hedge<\/em> has this analysis and warning:<\/p>\n

Western backed Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been heavily involved in post Soviet Armenia\u2019s education system, community and charity works.<\/strong> These NGOs have been selling the public on the perception that Armenia\u2019s economic woes are directly the result of their corrupt, Russia friendly government, as well as Russia itself.<\/p>\n

Hence, the concept that Sargsyan\u2019s government has only made matters for the population worse is the grievance upon which much of the unrest hinges. With Sargsyan seen as being in bed with the Russians, and his further development of Armenia\u2019s ties with Russia, these protests therefore possess a potentially disastrous outcome, both domestically, for the Armenians, and also geopolitically, as it threatens Russia\u2019s position in the region.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

However, Armenia has been playing both sides of the fence in recent years,<\/strong><\/u> as it has additionally been moving closer to the European Union, signing itself to a Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement with the European bloc, attempting to deepen diplomacy and economic ties with the West, while simultaneously making commitments to Russia\u2019s economic initiatives in the region. Russia gets a villainous wrap over the fact that Russia is playing both sides of the Nagorno Karabakh-Azerb conflict, as Russia is the benefactor of both players, the common perception, derived from the propaganda of these NGOs, is that Russia benefits by stoking the conflict.<\/p>\n

The situation, in effect, represents a powder keg scenario, with all the elements in place to provoke the necessary popular discontent that would play into an attempt at regime change. <\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n

And, indeed, this situation has all the markings of a color revolution, as the ring leader for this movement,\u00a0Nikol Pashinyan, is already calling it a \u201cvelvet revolution\u201d, an allusion to the regime change that took place in Czechoslovakia in 1989.<\/p>\n

Pashinyan has called upon protesters to obstruct roadways and prevent the opening of governmental offices, and has been so bold as to declare that the Armenian government \u201cno longer holds legitimacy\u201d, and that all government agencies and police personnel should only be obedient to \u201ccommittees\u201d appointed by his revolution.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind, however, that Sargsyan hasn\u2019t, thus far, broken any law, nor violated the Armenian constitution,<\/strong> so, Pashinyan\u2019s claim against Sargsyan\u2019s legitimacy can only be viewed as a baseless instigation for further violence and an obstinate unwillingness to look for a middle ground scenario, or peaceful resolution to the situation at hand. An unwillingness to compromise satisfies one of the key factors that is commonly seen in many color revolutions. …
\n<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

An about-face with regards to Russia, and an adherence to the West, however, not only fails to present the economic outcome that many Armenians might hope for, but it presents a very real danger in the form of a greater escalation of conflict with its neighbor Azerbaijan<\/strong>, with regards to Nagorno Karabakh, the last such major conflict costed the lives of some 6,000 Armenians, and approximately 30,000 Azeris.\u00a0https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-04-23\/western-backed-regime-change-looms-armenia-pm-resigns-following-mass-protests<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What Armenia really needs is the Kingdom of God<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As far as Armenia’s nearer term future goes, Bible prophecy (Jeremiah 51:27-29) shows that just prior to Armageddon that it will be more aligned with the east (Russia) than the west (the coming European Beast power). But between now and then, Armenia will likely try to work with Europe–it has, in recent months, claimed to wish to be a bridge between the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union.<\/p>\n

In other Armenian related matters, April 24th marks the 103rd anniversary of the date traditionally believed to have been the start of the Armenian genocide in 1915.<\/p>\n

The US Congress discussed it last week:<\/p>\n

U.S. Senators and Representatives joined together Wednesday evening at a U.S. Capitol observance hosted by the Congressional Armenian Caucus, making bipartisan calls upon the President and Congressional leaders to reject Turkey\u2019s gag-rule against honest American remembrance of the Armenian Genocide, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA). http:\/\/www.armradio.am\/en\/2018\/04\/19\/armenian-genocide-anniversary-observed-on-capitol-hill\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The USA has repeatedly failed to officially refer to the slaughter as genocide. But US Presidents have tended to make announcements. Here is last year’s from Donald Trump:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Today, we remember and honor the memory of those who suffered during the Meds Yeghern, one of the worst mass atrocities of the 20th century. Beginning in 1915, one and a half million Armenians were deported, massacred, or marched to their deaths in the final years of the Ottoman Empire. I join the Armenian community in America and around the world in mourning the loss of innocent lives and the suffering endured by so many.<\/p>\n

As we reflect on this dark chapter of human history, we also recognize the resilience of the Armenian people. Many built new lives in the United States and made indelible contributions to our country, while cherishing memories of the historic homeland in which their ancestors established one of the great civilizations of antiquity.<\/p>\n

We must remember atrocities to prevent them from occurring again. We welcome the efforts of Turks and Armenians to acknowledge and reckon with painful history, which is a critical step toward building a foundation for a more just and tolerant future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

YEREVAN \u2014 Armenia marked the centenary Friday of a mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as Germany became the latest country to recognize it as a genocide.<\/p>\n

Turkey denies that the killing of up to 1.5 million Armenians in what is now Turkey in 1915 constitutes genocide, and relations with Armenia are still blighted by the dispute.<\/p>\n

Germany’s parliament approved a resolution Friday branding the killings a “genocide,” risking a diplomatic rupture with Ankara in a significant change of stance for Turkey’s biggest trade European Union trade partner.<\/p>\n

The European Parliament refers to the killings as genocide, as did Pope Francis this month. The U.S. has refrained from doing so<\/a>. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan as recently as Thursday refuted the description of the killings as genocide. http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/armenian-genocide-100th-anniversary-germany-becomes-latest-use-term-n347641<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Here is some information about what happened a century or so ago:<\/p>\n

The Armenian Genocide (Armenian: \u0540\u0561\u0575\u0578\u0581 \u0551\u0565\u0572\u0561\u057d\u057a\u0561\u0576\u0578\u0582\u0569\u0575\u0578\u0582\u0576 Hayots Tseghaspanutyun), also known as the Armenian Holocaust, the Armenian Massacres and, traditionally by Armenians, as Medz Yeghern (Armenian: \u0544\u0565\u056e \u0535\u0572\u0565\u057c\u0576, “Great Crime”), was the Ottoman government’s systematic extermination of its minority Armenian subjects from their historic homeland within the territory constituting the present-day Republic of Turkey. The total number of people killed as a result has been estimated at between 1 and 1.5 million. The starting date is conventionally held to be 24 April 1915, the day Ottoman authorities rounded up and arrested some 250 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople. The genocide was carried out during and after World War I and implemented in two phases: the wholesale killing of the able-bodied male population through massacre and subjection of army conscripts to forced labour, followed by the deportation of women, children, the elderly and infirm on death marches leading to the Syrian desert. Driven forward by military escorts, the deportees were deprived of food and water and subjected to periodic robbery, rape, and massacre. The government of Turkey has tended to deny it was genocide, instead saying that most were killed in WWI and civil wars during that time. The Armenians strongly disagree.<\/p>\n

Armenians still face issues. A while back, a COG member sent me the following:<\/p>\n

My mom’s side relatives have lived in Aleppo, Syria all their lives, which has had a large thriving Eastern Orthodox Christian Armenian community for nearly a century. A number of them have left during the recent turmoil if they were able. An article in a recent daily news update on cogwriter referred to Christian persecution there. Well, the rebel groups are the ones bombing churches and persecuting those who refer to themselves as Christians (including Armenians). Two of my relatives were kidnapped by rebel forces (now released by ransom money). My relatives are upset at the so-called Arab Spring. It has destroyed the peace, the economy and their way of life, which they were happy with. The more secular Arab leaders like Assad have treated professing Christians very well for decades (though they may be harsh in other ways). The Armenians had no trouble with their religion, churches, schools, cultural activities, and speaking the language. They were highly regarded in the community. Now the rebels want to overthrow the regime and have a fanatical Moslem government, and, like you say, eventually try to establish a caliphate across the Middle East. They persecute any group calling itself Christian and are causing the disintegration of the Orthodox Christian communities.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The situation in Syria has been horrible. I have been praying for those affected in Syria for some time and again ask others to also do so. The post at COGwriter that he specifically referred to was Obama Administration considered to be a facilitator of \u2018Christian\u2019 persecution.<\/a><\/p>\n

While the Continuing<\/em> Church of God<\/a> does not consider that the modern Armenian Orthodox are part of the Church of God, there are certain doctrinal similarities (as well as important doctrinal differences, see Some Similarities and Differences Between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Continuing<\/em> Church of God<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The records of history demonstrate that as early as the first century A.D. there were Church of God Christians in Armenia. The Armenian Orthodox have claimed:<\/p>\n

Christianity was preached in Armenia as early as the second half of the first century by the two disciples of Jesus Christ, namely, St. Thaddeus (John 14:22-24) and St. Bartholomew (John 1:43-51). During the first three centuries Christianity in Armenia was a hidden religion under heavy persecution.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The true Church of God has long endured persecution and I do believe that there were true Christians in Armenia for quite some time, though not really the way many Armenians understand it.<\/p>\n

Around the time of Constantine it was known that there were binitarian<\/a> Paulicians in Armenia who also kept the seventh-day Sabbath.<\/a> Tamar Davis reported:<\/p>\n

Eustathius was succeeded by Erius, a priest, and semi-Arian…Erius\u2026condemned multiple marriages by the priests\u2026Erius also condemned fasts, stated feasts, prayers for the dead, and the celebration of Easter; he urged a purer morality and a stricter observance of the Sabbath. He had many followers, whose numbers were augmented by one of Paul of Samosota, from whom they were called Paulicians. Notwithstanding the opposition of the prelates, who invoked the secular arm to prevent the defection of their spiritual subjects, the tenets of this sect struck deep root in Armenia and many of its eastern provinces, and finally the great body of Christians in the former country, withdrew from the Episcopal communion, and publicly espoused the sentiments of the Paulicians…The bishops of Syria, Pontus, and Cappadocia, complained of the defection of their spiritual flocks…induced the Grecian emperors to commence, and continue for nearly two centuries, the most terrible persecutions against the Paulicians.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Armenian scholar Nina Garsoian in The Paulician Heresy, <\/em>wrote: \u201cIt would, then, appear that the Paulicians are to be taken as the survival of the earlier form of Christianity in Armenia\u201d (p. 227). She also wrote that the Paulicians were \u201caccused of being worse than other sects because of adding Judaism\u201d (p. 213).<\/p>\n

The Catholic Encyclopedia<\/em> calls the Paulicians heretics because they were basically against idolatry and Catholic ritualism:<\/p>\n

The Paulicians, as part of their heresy held\u2026that all external religious forms, sacraments, rites, especially material pictures and relics, should be abolished. To honour the Cross was especially reprehensible.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Furthermore, note this historical writing about the Paulicians in Armenia:<\/p>\n

From the earliest ages they have devoutly hated the error and idolatry of the Greeks. Like the primitive Christians, they have ever exhibited an unconquerable repugnance to the use or abuse of images, which, in the eighth and ninth centuries spread like a leprosy…and supplanted all traces of genuine piety in the visible church…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Catholic saint and doctor Jerome said that various of the Nazarene Christians were in Armenia in the fourth and fifth centuries (see Nazarene Christianity: Were the Original Christians Nazarenes?<\/a>). Some of the Paulicians and many of the Nazarene Christians were part of the Church of God.<\/p>\n

In the eighth and ninth centuries, many of the Armenian Paulicians were forcibly resettled in the Balkans by Byzantine emperors. After being relocated to the Balkans, the Paulicians came to be called Bogomils.<\/p>\n

The Eastern Orthodox also oppressed the Bogomils. Notice this odd admission from an Orthodox scholar (bolding mine):<\/p>\n

The Orthodox, as have all religions, berated other confessions and denominations. But Orthodoxy was always benign – no \u201cjihad\u201d, no bloodshed, no forced conversions and no mass expulsions – perhaps with the exception of the forcible treatment of the Bogomils<\/strong>. It was all about power and money, of course. Bishops and archbishops did not hesitate to co-opt the Ottoman administration against their adversaries…<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Notice that the Orthodox claim to have not caused bloodshed, forced conversions, or mass expulsions of any group, except what they did to the Bogomils<\/strong>. It is not completely clear how they treated others, but obviously, they felt mistreating people that were associated with the original Church of God was acceptable. Of course, some of the Orthodox began their persecutions much prior to the Bogomils with the early Paulicians (not just the Samosatans), various (like 4th<\/sup> century) Sabbath-keepers, and the Quartodecimans<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This type of persecution is consistent with what happened to true Christians in the Pergamos<\/a> and Thyatira <\/a>eras of the true Church of God.<\/p>\n

The historian, Fred C. Conybeare observed this about the Armenians affiliated with the Paulicians:<\/p>\n

They are accused by their Armenian opponents of setting at naught all the feasts and fasts of the Church, especially Sunday…The Sabbath was perhaps kept… they were probably the remnant of an old Judaeo-Christian Church, which had spread up through Edessa into Siuniq and Albania…We know that the Pauliani continued to keep Passover on the fourteenth of Nisan\u2026Of the modern Christmas and of the Annunciation, and of the other feasts connected with the life of Jesus prior to his thirtieth year, this phase of the church knew nothing. The general impression which the study of it leaves on us is that in it we have before us a form of Church not very remote from the primitive Jewish Christianity of Palestine.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The following is from the Catholic Priest Basil Sarkisean\u2019s work Manichaean Paulician Heresy<\/em> and is from a 987 A.D. letter written by Gregory of Narek against the Paulicians (Note that I have left out additions by the editor\/translator F. Conybeare):<\/p>\n

Then among the observances which we know to have been repudiated by them as neither apostolic or divine the mysterious prayers of genuflexion…<\/p>\n

The Font is denied by them…<\/p>\n

the communion of immortality…is denied…<\/p>\n

We know that they deny the adored sign, which God, made man, raised and carried on his shoulders.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Harvard scholar H. Brown wrote:<\/p>\n

The Bogomils…Its doctrine of God is highly dualistic…There is no True Trinity<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

One of their so-called \u201cdualistic\u201d teachings was that this is Satan\u2019s world. One scholar noted that an:<\/p>\n

…important idea of Bogomils and Cathars, i.e. that this world is the kingdom of the devil.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Perhaps it should be noted that groups like the faithful in the Church of God also believe that this is Satan\u2019s world (cf. Matthew 4:8; Luke 4:5; 2 Corinthians 4:4). This will change, however, when Christ returns (Revelation 11:15). This being Satan\u2019s world is part of the reason that the Bible warns us to not love this present world (1 John 2:15-17).<\/p>\n

Another reason that their teachings are called dualistic is probably because, as non-trinitarians (see also Did the True Church Ever Teach a Trinity?<\/a>), they would have most likely been binitarian (see also Binitarian View: One God, Two Beings Before the Beginning<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Notice this from The Catholic Encyclopedia<\/em>:<\/p>\n

The heresy of the Bogomili was started in the tenth century…followers called themselves Christians and considered their faith the only true one. In Bosnia they were named Paterines. The Paterines, or Bogomili…forbade intercourse with those of other faiths, disbelieved in war.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The true Church of God remains opposed to Christians participating in carnal warfare (see Military Service and the Churches of God: Do Real Christians Participate in Carnal Warfare or Encourage Violence?<\/a>).<\/p>\n

It is of historical interest to note the following doctrinal admissions in the article on the Paulicians in The Catholic Encyclopedia<\/em> (bolding<\/strong> mine):<\/p>\n

They honoured not the Cross, but only the book of the Gospel. They were Iconoclasts, rejecting all pictures…<\/p>\n

The whole ecclesiastical hierarchy is bad, as also all Sacraments and ritual. They had a special aversion to monks…<\/p>\n

Since Gibbon the Paulicians have often been described as a survival of early and pure Christianity<\/strong>, godly folk who clung to the Gospel, rejecting later superstitions, who were grossly calumniated by their opponents…<\/p>\n

In Armenia the sect continued in the \u201cThonraketzi\u201d founded by a certain Smbat in the ninth century. Conybeare attributes to this Smbat a work, \u201cThe Key of Truth\u201d, which he has edited. It accepts the Old Testament and the Sacraments of Baptism. Penance, and the Eucharist. This work especially has persuaded many writers that the Paulicians were much maligned people. But in any case it represents a very late stage of their history, and it is disputed whether it is really Paulician at all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The following is apparently from the work History of Armenia<\/em> by Chamich and is from a 1054-1058 A.D. letter written by Gregory Magistros against the Manichaean (Note that I have left out additions by the editor\/translator F. Conybeare):<\/p>\n

…they represent our worship of God as worship of idol. As if we, who honour the sign of the cross and the holy pictures, were still engaged in worshiping devils.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Those who opposed idols and icons (see What Did the Early Church Teach About Idols and Icons?<\/a>) were often persecuted (see Persecutions by Church and State<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Interestingly, The Catholic Encyclopedia<\/em> article also admits:<\/p>\n

The emperor Alexius Comnenus is credited with having put an end to the heresy. During a residence at Philippopolis, he argued with them and converted all, or nearly all, back to the Church (so his daughter: \u201cAlexias\u201d, XV, 9). From this time the Paulicians practically disappear from history. But they left traces of their heresy. In Bulgaria the Bogomile sect, which lasted through the Middle Ages and spread to the West in the form of Cathari, Albigensians, and other Manichaean heresies, is a continuation of Paulicianism. In Armenia, too, similar sects, derived from them, continue till our own time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Notice that even some Roman Catholic scholars know that it is possible that some of the Paulicians were the survivors of an early and pure Christianity and that they had spiritual descendants that continued into the future (Alexius Comnenus died in A.D. 1118 and essentially dealt with the Paulicians at Philippopolis in the late eleventh century), such as those within the Thyatira era, and well into modern times! This, combined with Gibbon\u2019s account, is supportive of the view that a laying on of hands continued from the beginning, through the late eleventh century and beyond. The Cathari were also known to be pacifists, as were the faithful among the Paulicians. Of course, there were many called by those names that were not faithful. But completely faithful or not, they were often persecuted.<\/p>\n

There has long been a history of persecution against those who hold Church of God teachings. And the Armenians, including those that no longer hold Church of God teachings, have also been persecuted. The persecution and atrocious massacre by the Turks about a century ago is still an important issue for Armenians. The persecution of Armenians in Syria and elsewhere in the 21st century is atrocious as well.<\/p>\n

Between civil war, chemical weapons, murders, deaths, and war crimes, it is terrible what the people in Syria, Armenian or not, have had to endure. They, along with all of us, need to pray “Thy kingdom come” (Matthew 6:10, KJV).<\/p>\n
