Last year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled a comprehensive bill that would federally legalize the recreational use of marijuana. It has now happened:<\/p>\n

Canada has become<\/a> the first wealthy nation in the world to fully legalize marijuana<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Senate approved Bill C-45<\/a>, also known as the Cannabis Act, on Tuesday. The measure was already approved by the House of Commons, so the Senate\u2019s approval means it\u2019s now set to become law.<\/p>\n

The measure legalizes marijuana possession, home growing, and sales for adults. The federal government will oversee remaining criminal sanctions (for, say, selling to minors) and the licensing of producers, while provincial governments will manage sales, distribution, and related regulations \u2014 as such, provinces will be able to impose tougher rules, such as raising the minimum age. This is not good for Canada, but it seems to be following the lead of several states in the USA, like California.<\/p>\n

The reason this is not good is not because the ‘war on drugs’ is working (it’s not), but because more people are likely to use, or at least try, this mind-altering drug.<\/p>\n

Last year, some in Canada saw this as dangerous:<\/p>\n

OTTAWA\u2014Marijuana is a \u201cdangerous drug,\u201d Conservative leadership hopeful Kellie Leitch said Tuesday as she promised to undo the Liberal government\u2019s efforts to legalize it, should she become her party\u2019s leader and eventually prime minister.<\/p>\n

There are too many public health and safety concerns surrounding marijuana for it to be legal, Leitch told The Canadian Press as the government prepares to table legislation later this week to legalize and regulate its sale.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, I will be reviewing it, but I\u2019m a pediatric orthopedic surgeon \u2014 I have personal views on this that I feel very strongly about,\u201d Leitch said in a roundtable interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think that we should be legalizing this drug; this is a dangerous drug and I don\u2019t want it in the hands of children.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Scientific evidence shows the drug can have damaging effects on the brains of those under the age of 25 and should only be available from pharmacies for patients with prescriptions, Leitch added.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have young people come to me as a physician and say \u2018You know, I don\u2019t understand, Dr. Leitch \u2014 I\u2019m told not to do drugs, but can I do this drug now?\u201d she said. \u201cThese are the kinds of messages Canadian parents do not want portrayed to their kids.\u201d<\/p>\n
