{"id":4944,"date":"2010-09-19T18:33:56","date_gmt":"2010-09-20T02:33:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/?p=4944"},"modified":"2010-09-18T18:40:24","modified_gmt":"2010-09-19T02:40:24","slug":"eastern-orthodox-visiting-vatican","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/religious-news\/eastern-orthodox-visiting-vatican\/","title":{"rendered":"Eastern Orthodox Visiting Vatican"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/BartholomewI.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople\" width=\"200\" height=\"301\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople <\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/cogwriter.htm\">COGwriter <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/orthodox.htm\">Eastern Orthodox<\/a> are determined to get closer to the Vatican:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">Local Catholics and Greek Orthodox joined their leaders  Wednesday on a pilgrimage that is a first \u2013 but a continuation of  history.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Bishop McManus and Metropolitan Methodios, of the  Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston, are leading 25 other pilgrims on a  Sept. 15-26 trip to Rome, for an audience with Pope Benedict XVI, and to  Constantinople, for Divine Liturgy celebrated by Patriarch Bartholomew.  Patriarch Bartholomew is the Orthodox patriarch of Constantinople, in  modern day Istanbul, Turkey.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Worcester is believed to be the site of the first  official dialog between Catholic and Greek Orthodox leaders in the  United States. They met Sept. 9, 1965 at St. Spyridon Church, now St.  Spyridon Cathedral, in Worcester&#8230;<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In 1054 the first major division in Christianity occurred when the  patriarch of Constantinople and a papal delegation from Rome  excommunicated each other in a dispute over papal primacy. Orthodox  churches, generally defined by their region of origin, give special  honor to the patriarch of Constantinople. He is considered the \u201cfirst  among equals\u201d among Orthodox patriarchs; his primacy does not entail  ultimate jurisdiction over other Orthodox churches.
