The USA is insistent upon reimposing sanctions against Iran:<\/p>\n

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says Iran has to start behaving like what he calls a “normal country,” as the United States prepares to reimpose sanctions on Tehran.<\/p>\n

“This is just about the Iranians’ dissatisfaction with their own government and the president’s (Trump) been pretty clear. We want the Iranian people to have a strong voice in who their leadership will be,” Pompeo told reporters Sunday.<\/p>\n

He said the White House would give details Monday about the sanctions that will take effect Tuesday against a wide range of Iranian industries, including its automotive industry, gold, coal and steel. The Iranian government will also no longer be allowed to buy U.S. and European planes and U.S. banknotes.<\/p>\n

People and businesses involved in those industries were given a 90-day period to wind down their activities. That period expires Monday.<\/p>\n

Sanctions against Iranian energy exports are set to come back into effect in November.<\/p>\n

The sanctions that had been lifted are returning after President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and five other nations. …<\/p>\n

Iran and the other signatories remain committed to the agreement. The International Atomic Energy Agency, which is monitoring the implementation of the deal, says Iran is in compliance and that the agreement has allowed for greater verification of Iran’s nuclear activities. https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/us-iran-sanctions\/4515192.html<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

EU Blocks Trump\u2019s Iran Sanctions To Protect Companies Hours Ahead Of Snapback<\/span><\/h2>\n

The European Union issued a statement Monday ahead of when renewed US sanctions are set to snap back against Iran after midnight US Eastern time, saying it “deeply regrets” the sanctions and will take immediate action to protect European companies\u00a0still doing business with Iran<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The statement by EU diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini and the foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany\u00a0pledged to\u00a0also work to keep “effective financial channels” open with Iran<\/strong>. “We deeply regret the re-imposition of sanctions by the US, due to the latter’s withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” the statement<\/a> issued from\u00a0Brussels begins.<\/p>\n

The US has ordered all other countries to halt imports of Iranian oil by early November or face punitive measures. In a statement on Sunday<\/a> Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the White House will detail implementation of the measures sometime\u00a0Monday morning.<\/p>\n

As expected after the Trump administration was unmoved by European leaders’ calls for an exemption, the EU will seek legal protection for\u00a0firms in the 28-nation bloc to work with Iran by invoking its so-called blocking statute<\/strong>, considered\u00a0the most powerful tool at its immediate disposal. When invoked,\u00a0it bans any EU company from complying with US\u00a0sanctions<\/strong> and does not recognize any foreign court rulings seeking to enforce American penalties.<\/p>\n

According to the statement<\/a>:<\/p>\n

We are determined to protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran, in accordance with EU law and with UN Security Council resolution 2231. This is why the European Union\u2019s updated Blocking Statute enters into force on 7 August to protect EU companies doing legitimate business with Iran from the impact of US extra-territorial sanctions<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The EU also restated its commitment to upholding the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), calling the 2015 brokered agreement\u00a0“a matter of international security”<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

The remaining parties to the JCPOA have committed to work on, inter alia, the preservation and maintenance of effective financial channels with Iran, and the continuation of Iran’s export of oil and gas<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

At the end of the day Monday, the\u00a0following\u00a0sanctions will be re-imposed according to a\u00a0US Treasury Department official statement<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cSanctions on the purchase or acquisition of\u00a0US dollar bank notes by the Government of Iran<\/strong>; sanctions on\u00a0Iran\u2019s trade in gold or precious metals<\/strong>; sanctions on the direct or indirect sale, supply, or transfer to or from Iran of\u00a0graphite, raw, or semi-finished metals such as aluminum and steel, coal, and software for integrating industrial processes<\/strong>; sanctions on significant transactions related to\u00a0the purchase or sale of Iranian rials<\/strong>, or the maintenance of significant funds or accounts outside the territory of Iran denominated in the Iranian rial; sanctions on the purchase, subscription to, or facilitation of the issuance of Iranian sovereign debt;\u00a0sanctions on Iran\u2019s automotive sector<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Well, I would not conclude that the Trump Administration is unmoved by this. I suspect various ones in it will point to this as proof that the EU is not supportive of USA policy and will consider this another reason for applying tariffs against the EU.<\/p>\n

The European Union’s position is not new. It has stated in the past that it wants to continue to trade with Iran:<\/p>\n

Since Trump’s announcement last Tuesday, European diplomats have attempted to cast doubt<\/a> over the administration’s chances of getting Europe to pull out of business dealings with the Islamic Republic. The Iranian matter will increase international trade in Euros and away from the USA dollar. That will not help the USA in the long-run.<\/p>\n

Various nations do not like the trade policies that Donald Trump has advocated. China is one.
