Groups of youths in Sweden set fire to dozens of cars in the city of Gothenburg and surrounding towns on Monday, in what Prime Minister Stefan Lofven described as “extremely organized” attacks.<\/p>\n

Police said up to 100 cars were burned or damaged in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-biggest city, as well as in Trollhattan, an industrial area with high unemployment, and Falkenberg. A number of cars were also burned overnight in Stockholm. …<\/p>\n

Witnesses told police the alleged offenders were dressed in dark clothing and hoodies. …<\/p>\n

No injuries were reported and no one has\u00a0been arrested, the Swedish Aftonbladet<\/em> newspaper reported. …<\/p>\n

Public concern over gang-related and other violence has become a key issue in political campaigns ahead of Sweden’s national election on September 9.<\/p>\n

A surge in gang violence in Sweden saw more than 40 people shot dead last year.<\/p>\n

The suspect was arrested on “suspicion of terrorist offenses,” the London Metropolitan Police say. He has been described only as a man in his late 20s, who had been driving the silver Ford Fiesta when it crashed through a stream of cyclists and pedestrians and hit a barrier.<\/p>\n

“Our priority is to formally identify the suspect and establish his motivations if we can. He is not currently co-operating,” Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said. https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/08\/14\/638432784\/pedestrians-injured-in-car-crash-outside-u-k-parliament<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While the UK and Swedish incidents do not appear to be directly related, both are acts of terrorism.<\/p>\n
