Leaders in Ukraine met today in their efforts to become independent of the Moscow patriarch:<\/p>\n

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has announced the creation of an independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church, marking a historic split from Russia.<\/p>\n

He said national security depended on “spiritual independence” from Russia.<\/p>\n

He was speaking at a special council of orthodox priests in Kiev, where a new leader of the Church was selected.<\/p>\n

The Russian Orthodox Church cut ties with the spiritual authority of the world’s Orthodoxy<\/a> after it recognised the Ukrainian Church’s independence.<\/p>\n

Russia also fears that its churches in Ukraine could be seized. …<\/p>\n

The special council was held in the ancient St Sophia’s Cathedral – one of Kiev’s best known landmarks.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian clerics of different Orthodox denominations – including some bishops from the Moscow branch – elected Metropolitan Epifaniy as the leader of the new church.<\/p>\n

“This day will go into history as a sacred day… the day of the final independence from Russia,” President Poroshenko told a crowd of thousands outside the cathedral. https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-46575548<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Russian church is concerned about this and has asked for international assistance:<\/p>\n

MINSK, Belarus \u2013 <\/span>The Russian Orthodox Church on Friday called on the United Nations, the leaders of Germany and France, the pope and other spiritual leaders to protect believers in Ukraine in the face of pressure on Moscow-affiliated clerics. … The Ukrainian church has been part of the Russian Church for centuries, while enjoying broad autonomy, but Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has pushed for the creation of an independent church.<\/p>\n

The newly formed community would then be expected to receive independence from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Istanbul-based institution considered the so-called “first among equals” of leaders of the world’s Orthodox Churches that has already drafted a charter for an independent Ukrainian church.<\/p>\n

The Russian Church said on Friday that its Patriarch Kirill has sent a letter to the U.N. secretary-general, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, Pope Francis, the Archbishop of Canterbury and other spiritual leaders, urging them to help protect the clerics, believers and their faith in Ukraine. …<\/p>\n

Ukrainian authorities have sought to portray Russian Orthodox priests in Ukraine as supporting Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine, claims that the clerics have rejected.<\/p>\n

Kirill’s letter accused the Ukrainian government of hate speech and pressuring the clerics to take part in the Saturday gathering.<\/p>\n

“The numerous instances of discrimination against the Ukrainian Church (of the Moscow Patriarchate) give us the reason to fear far worse infringements of the rights and legitimate interests of Orthodox believers,” the letter said. https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/russian-orthodox-church-calls-on-un-for-help-in-ukraine<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church blamed Constantinople for causing a schism between the Eastern and Russian Orthodox churches in October (see Schism: Russian Orthodox meet with Vatican regarding Constantinople<\/a>), and is now trying to see if he can retain some influence in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

There was not some new doctrinal change in the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) that caused Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople to recognize the Ukrainian Orthodox church as independent of the ROC.<\/p>\n

Basically, the schism is due to politics.<\/p>\n

In Moscow, the Russian Orthodox Church protested vigorously and dismissed the synod as uncanonical.<\/p>\n

Vladimir Legoida, a spokesman for the Moscow church, told Russian state television that the Kiev synod had “no church, religious or evangelical meaning” and that it will have “no canonical consequences”.<\/p>\n

Representatives of Ukraine’s three Orthodox Churches attended the synod, but only two from the branch loyal to Moscow showed up.<\/p>\n

Orthodox Schisms: What Will Happen?<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

In 2018, after an appeal by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko a growing rift between the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople (Bartholomew) and the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church (Kirill) became a schism. When Constantinople declared that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was granted \u201dautocephaly\u201d (independence), the Russian Orthodox declared this was a schism and broke off Eucharistic communion with Constantinople. Like the \u2018great schism of 1054,\u2019 many see this schism as primarily political and not theological. Will this rift possibly be repaired? If so, will ecumenical unity be temporal? Who is mystery Babylon? Will Russia support the Beast of Revelation 13 and later be a leader in destroying end time Babylon? There may be many ramifications of this schism between Russia and Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The Church of Russia announced this week that it was breaking ties with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, which has primacy in Orthodoxy and which has decided <\/a>to give autonomy to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. This decision stems directly from Moscow\u2019s annexation of Crimea and its support for separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine, although Ukrainians had long been unhappy about their church remaining subordinate to Russia\u2019s, as it had been since 1686. This year, their president, Parliament and religious leaders petitioned the leader of the Constantinople Patriarchate, Bartholomew, to grant their church independence \u2014 or autocephaly, as it is known in the church.<\/p>\n

These developments will have serious implications within Ukraine. Its mostly Orthodox population is divided among three main churches; the newly independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate would gain influence and most likely seek to take over houses of worship and other property from the church under Moscow\u2019s jurisdiction, which, until now, was the largest in Ukraine and the only one recognized by other churches.<\/p>\n

This will further strain relations between Ukraine and Russia. Also, the break in relations between Moscow and the Ecumenical Patriarchate could weaken the latter if other Orthodox churches follow Russia in rejecting Constantinople\u2019s primacy. The shock waves would affect relations between churches that find themselves on either side of the divide, forcing them, too, to sever ties. The churches of Poland, Serbia and Antioch (Syria) have already come out on Russia\u2019s side.<\/p>\n

The Church of Greece could also be shaken, as a number of Greek clergymen may support Moscow against Bartholomew. …<\/p>\n

As in most schisms in Christianity\u2019s history, this one is determined as much by realpolitik and national interests as by dogma. …<\/p>\n

Constantinople was established by the Emperor Constantine in 330 and, as the \u201cNew Rome,\u201d it came just after Rome in seniority. The schism in 1054 left Constantinople the primary church in the East. It is these rights of primacy that the Ecumenical Patriarchate is determined to defend, despite its very reduced circumstances following the city\u2019s fall to the Ottomans and the withering of its own flock in Turkey.<\/p>\n

Russia wants to project its leadership of the Orthodox world as the \u201cThird Rome,\u201d a role it took upon itself after breaking away from Constantinople in 1448, when its leadership disagreed with efforts to unite East and West Christendom. After 1453, many Orthodox, including the Greeks, looked to Russia for salvation from the Turks.<\/p>\n

The Greeks have long had an issue with Patriarch Bartholomew’s ecumenism and this may give them a reason to split from Constantinople.<\/p>\n

The above article did not mention that the Vatican and the World Council of Churches (WCC) are impacted by this.<\/p>\n

The Vatican, because it not only has felt it had a good ecumenical relationship with Patriarch Bartholomew, but also because it thought it had an ecumenical chance with Patriarch Kirill.<\/p>\n

And as far as the WCC goes, it essentially went on record a long while ago supporting the ROC’s position on the Ukrainian Orthodox.<\/p>\n

The schism between Constantinople and the ROC has the potential to cause division in Europe.<\/p>\n

The schism between Constantinople and the ROC has the potential to cause Ukraine to split with part supporting Russia.<\/p>\n

However, I believe any split between the ROC and Europe will be temporary.<\/p>\n

The Russian Orthodox Church, for a time, will support the power that will rise up in Europe (cf. Revelation 13:1-10).<\/p>\n
