A week ago, Democrat Elizabeth Warren essentially announced her candidacy for the office of US President.<\/p>\n

And she has started to campaign:<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Warren is introducing herself to influential Iowa Democrats by telling her personal story of economic opportunity, trying to lay claim in the emerging 2020 presidential field as a champion for a middle class she says is withering under President Donald Trump. 01\/05\/19 https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/31e670e6605c4f9a85930fdbfb8b31b2<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There has been controversy over her claims of native American heritage and at least two Republican leaders have called her names to make fun of that:<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Warren is making her first campaign tour\u00a0around Iowa, a crucial state for the probable 2020\u00a0competitor, but was quickly forced to address an issue that’s likely to hurt her in the race for the White House.<\/p>\n

During a Saturday morning event in\u00a0Sioux City, audience members were given the chance to ask the Massachusetts senator questions. The first? A query\u00a0about her decision to take a DNA test and release the results on her Native American ancestry.<\/p>\n

“Why did you undergo the DNA testing and give Donald Trump more fodder to be a bully?” an audience member asked the Democrat.<\/p>\n

Warren released results from the DNA test in October, which showed “strong evidence” of Native American ancestry, partially in response to\u00a0criticism from\u00a0Republicans, including President Donald Trump who nicknamed her “Pocahontas.” Conservatives have attacked Warren for claiming Cherokee heritage in order to gain favor for jobs that helped boost her career, something her former employers have said did not play a role in the hiring process.<\/p>\n

The test results were\u00a0widely mocked because\u00a0they only showed that her Native American ancestry went back six\u00a0to 10 generations. The test, which showed she was\u00a0at least 1\/1024th Native American, was also\u00a0denounced by the Cherokee nation that said\u00a0using “a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong.”<\/p>\n

After the question from the audience\u00a0member, Warren on Saturday told Iowan voters that the test wasn’t meant to show any claim to a tribe and said she understood and respected the difference between ancestry and tribal citizenship. Freshman\u00a0Rep. Deb Haaland<\/a><\/span> (D-N.M.), who this week became one of the first two Native American women sworn into Congress, said it was \u201coffensive and hurtful\u201d for Rep. Matt Gaetz<\/a><\/span> (R-Fla.) to call Sen. Elizabeth Warren<\/a><\/span> (D-Mass.) \u201cSacagawea.”\u00a0…<\/p>\n

Gaetz made the remark<\/a> about Warren and her claims of Native American heritage\u00a0during a Fox News segment Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know the president likes to call her \u2018Pocahontas,\u2019 but now that she\u2019s making her way from the eastern seaboard into the center of the country, maybe\u00a0Sacagawea\u00a0would be more appropriate,\u201d Gaetz said. \u201cInstead of bringing Lewis and Clark, she is bringing the most liberal policies of the Democratic Party.\u201d<\/p>\n

It began during Warren’s 2012 Senate run, when her opponent, Brown, accused her of lying to get a leg up in her academic career.<\/div>\n
“Professor Warren claimed that she was a Native American, a person of color,” he said during a debate. “And as you can see, she’s not.”<\/div>\n
Warren shot back that she had not gained any “advantage” — a claim that has proven impossible to fact check — and in a subsequent ad again cited family lore.\u00a0 …<\/div>\n

What’s been Trump’s line of attack?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n
Mostly name-calling and trying to use Warren’s statements about her heritage to discredit her.<\/div>\n
“Let’s properly check goofy Elizabeth Warren’s records to see if she is Native American. I say she’s a fraud!” he tweeted in May 2016.<\/div>\n
Trump sharpened his attacks as that campaign heated up, telling NBC News<\/a>: “She made up her heritage, which I think is racist.
