{"id":5498,"date":"2010-11-29T11:45:03","date_gmt":"2010-11-29T19:45:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/?p=5498"},"modified":"2010-11-29T11:45:03","modified_gmt":"2010-11-29T19:45:03","slug":"swiss-vote-to-expel-foreign-criminals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/religious-news\/swiss-vote-to-expel-foreign-criminals\/","title":{"rendered":"Swiss vote to expel foreign criminals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/cogwriter.htm\">COGwriter<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a move that should not be considered as unexpected, the Swiss have voted to deport foreign criminals:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Swiss voters have agreed to expel foreigners convicted of crimes  ranging from murder to welfare fraud, without appeal, in the latest  example of a sweeping set of popular antiforeigner measures around Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Some 53 percent of Swiss voted for a \u201cDeportation Initiative\u201d brought by  the far-right Swiss People\u2019s Party (SVP) a year after it engineered an  initiative banning the building of minarets. Senior European Union officials decried a new \u201cpopulist surge\u201d on the continent&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The Deportation Initiative requires local judges to automatically deport  persons of foreign origin whether or not they were born in Switzerland \u2013  and deportations apply to major crimes as well as lesser crimes, such  as drug trafficking or fraudulent acceptance of unemployment benefits.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/World\/Europe\/2010\/1129\/Swiss-vote-to-expel-foreign-criminals-adds-to-populist-surge-across-Europe\"> http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/World\/Europe\/2010\/1129\/Swiss-vote-to-expel-foreign-criminals-adds-to-populist-surge-across-Europe<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is causing Switzerland some international concerns as some of the, now to be required, deportations may violate various international treaties the Swiss have approved.<\/p>\n<p>The vote also resulted in protests in Zurich.<\/p>\n<p>But across Europe, Europeans have been rising up against certain immigrants and practices (such as what the Swiss did last year, see <a title=\"Switzerland Votes to Ban Minarets\" rel=\"bookmark\" href=\"\/news\/religious-news\/switzerland-votes-to-ban-minarets\/\">Switzerland Votes to Ban Minarets<\/a> and the French and others are doing, see <a title=\"Permanent Link to Burqa Banning in Belgium, Italy, France, and Australia\" rel=\"bookmark\" href=\"\/news\/religious-news\/burqa-banning-in-belgium-italy-france-and-australia\/\">Burqa Banning in Belgium, Italy, France, and Australia<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0 There is voter unrest and even some civil unrest.<\/p>\n<p>Things are changing in Europe.\u00a0 Including in Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p><em>Two articles of possibly related interest may include:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/europa.htm\">Europa, the Beast, and   Revelation<\/a> Where did Europe get its name?
