The EU Parliament has elected German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen as the next EU Commission President:<\/p>\n

Germany’s Ursula von der Leyen has been narrowly elected president of the EU Commission following a secret ballot among MEPs.<\/p>\n

The centre-right defence minister will replace Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on 1 November.<\/p>\n

She secured the backing of more than half of the members of the European parliament on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

The Commission drafts EU laws, enforces EU rules and has the power to impose fines on member states if necessary.<\/p>\n

“The trust you placed in me is confidence you placed in Europe,” Mrs von der Leyen, who is the first woman to be elected president of the European Commission, said in a speech immediately after the vote.<\/p>\n

“Your confidence in a united and strong Europe, from east to west, from south to north.”<\/p>\n

“It is a big responsibility and my work starts now,” she added. “Let us work together constructively.”<\/p>\n

Not all the Members of the European Parliament (MEpS) have been pleased with her:<\/p>\n

French and German MEPs representing the far left and the far right also railed against Von der Leyen\u2019s previously stated aspiration to forge a \u201cUnited States of Europe<\/a>\u201d and establish an EU army. https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jul\/16\/half-of-eu-commissioners-should-be-women-says-ursula-von-der-leyen<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Now, it could be that she was selected because 1) she was a woman and the EU wants more gender balance and 2) she advocates a European army, plus notice the following:<\/p>\n

At first glance, the affable 60-year-old minister with a camera-ready smile looks to be a perfect fit, with the requisite experience, political pedigree and personality to handle the EU\u2019s toughest job.<\/p>\n

And yet a nagging question remains: Is she too good to be true?<\/p>\n

In the German capital, the answer is clear.<\/p>\n

\u201cVon der Leyen is our weakest minister. That\u2019s apparently enough to become Commission president,\u201d former European Parliament President Martin Schulz seethed in a tweet<\/a> …<\/p>\n

She may be considered sufficiently pliable to go along with what many behind the scene want the EU to become.<\/p>\n

What does the European Commission do?<\/h2>\n

Its job is to come up with laws for member states and enforce them. Based in Brussels, it’s the only EU body that can draft laws.<\/p>\n

Once its proposals have the approval of the European Parliament and a council of 28 ministers from the EU states, they can become law. …<\/p>\n

The European Commission has referred a number of countries – including the UK – to court for breaching air pollution limits.<\/a> …<\/p>\n

Rule of law<\/strong><\/p>\n

The European Commission has also taken action against some eastern member states over the rule of law.<\/p>\n

It launched a series of legal actions against Poland over reforms to its judiciary.<\/p>\n

It warned Romania it would take legal action if it failed to scrap measures seen to threaten the independence of its courts.<\/p>\n

Separately, the European Parliament backed disciplinary action against Hungary, amid concerns over free speech and treatment of asylum seekers.<\/p>\n

Data protection<\/strong><\/p>\n

The EU made sweeping changes last year to data privacy regulations, tightening up rules about the way companies use our personal information. …<\/p>\n

Internet giants<\/strong><\/p>\n

Curbing the power of internet giants has also been a focus for the European Commission.<\/p>\n

Among its targets is Google, which it has fined three times in the past two years. … Competition cases have also been brought against Apple, Amazon, Ikea, Gazprom and chip giant Qualcomm. https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-48963555<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She wants to raise taxes:<\/p>\n

Germany\u2019s Ursula von der Leyen … has said she wants U.S. tech giants to pay \u201cfair taxes\u201d in the EU instead of gaming the different systems across the bloc to cut their bills. …<\/p>\n

\u201cI will stand for fair taxes \u2013 whether for brick and mortar industries or digital businesses. When the tech giants are making huge profits in Europe, this is fine because we are an open market and we like competition,\u201d von der Leyen told the parliament on Tuesday …<\/p>\n

\u201cBut if they are making these profits by benefiting from our education system, our skilled workers, our infrastructure and our social security … it is not acceptable that they make profits, but they are barely paying any taxes because they play our tax system. If they want to benefit, they have to share the burden.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ursula von der Leyen’s tax raising pledge brings the following scripture to mind:<\/p>\n

20 There shall arise in his place one who imposes taxes on the glorious kingdom; but within a few days he shall be destroyed, but not in anger or in battle. (Daniel 11:20)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

My knowledge of Hebrew grammar is not sufficient for me to conclude that the above scripture must refer to a male. If not, it could be that Ursula von der Leyen might be the prophesied promoter of taxes who would come to her end. We will see what will happen with her.<\/p>\n

Last week, Germany\u2019s Minister of Defense, Ursula von der Leyen again reiterated that the launching of the EU\u2019s military union is to achieve strategic \u201cindependence\u201d [13] \u2013 in relationship to the United States. The defense ministry also declared that this step has an \u201coverriding added value \u2026 at the political level:\u201d \u201cThe EU\u2019s integration process is receiving a new boost with the EU\u2019s defense union.\u201d[14] 12\/11\/17 https:\/\/www.german-foreign-policy.com\/en\/news\/detail\/7477\/<\/a><\/p>\n

German Predominance<\/h3>\n

The German Ministry of Defense explicitly points out that PESCO \u201cis similar to NATO\u2019s Framework Nations Concept.\u201d \u201cIt also involves projects that cannot be jointly implemented with all partner countries \u2026<\/p>\n
