Over 200 rabbis, including the Chief Rabbis of Israel, sent a letter to President Trump, thanking him for his recognition of Israel\u2019s right to Judea and Samaria. The letter was composed by the Chief Rabbi of Tzfat, Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu and published in Srugim<\/em><\/a>\u00a0compared the political move to the prophecy of Jeremiah.<\/p>\n

Again you shall plant vineyards On the hills of\u00a0Shomron<\/a><\/em>; Men shall plant and live to enjoy them. Jeremiah 31:4<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cOver 2,500 years ago, the Prophet Jeremiah claimed that the nation of Israel would return to the hills of Samaria and plant their vineyards there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Rabbis then cited another verse in Jeremiah as being manifested by Trump\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n

Did Donald Trump just fulfill Jeremiah 31 word for word?<\/p>\n

No, Donald Trump did NOT just fulfill Jeremiah 31.<\/p>\n

Also, unless the translation that BIN is using differently numbered verses (and it looks like it does), here is how the Jewish Publication Society renders Jeremiah 31:22:<\/p>\n

22 How long wilt thou turn away coyly, O thou backsliding daughter? For the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth: A woman shall court a man. (Jeremiah 31:22, JPS)
\n<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It appears what BIN cited as Jeremiah 31:22 is usually referred to as the next verse, which is shown below with two translations as well as two following verses for context:<\/p>\n

23 <\/span>Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Yet again shall they use this speech In the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, When I shall turn their captivity: \u2018The LORD bless thee, O habitation of righteousness, O mountain of holiness.\u2019\u00a0 24 And Judah and all the cities thereof<\/p>\n

No, that has not been fulfilled. God did not just return Judah from captivity. And Israel is not well spoken of by much of the world as most condemn the US policy change on Judea\/Samaria as did Pope Francis (see Pope Francis opposes certain Jewish settlements, suggests US actions will not bring peace, and pushes for international involvement<\/span><\/a>). Furthermore, consider the context as it should be clear to all that God has not replenished\/satiated every weary\/sorrowful\/pining soul there.<\/p>\n

Various ones have attempted to point to US President Donald Trump as fulfilling various biblical prophecies that he simply has not fulfilled, while overlooking ones he actually is helping to fulfill.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, some Jews and some Protestants have claimed that Donald Trump is the modern version of the biblical Cyrus. Coins have been made by certain Jews in Israel related to that.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, even Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu compared Donald Trump to the biblical Cyrus (see Israeli PM compares Donald Trump to Cyrus, Jerusalem Post says not yet<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Last year, the Protestant<\/a> publication calling itself Christianity Today<\/em> put out the following:<\/p>\n

Is Trump Our Cyrus? The Old Testament Case for Yes and No<\/h2>\n

Following the 45th president\u2019s announcement earlier this year that the US embassy in Israel would move<\/a> from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the Israeli Prime Minister remarked, \u201cI want to tell you that the Jewish people have a long memory, so we remember the proclamation of the great king, Cyrus the Great, Persian king 2,500 years ago. He proclaimed that the Jewish exiles in Babylon could come back and rebuild our Temple in Jerusalem.\u201d<\/p>\n

American evangelicals have compared Trump to the Persian ruler since the Republican primaries. …<\/p>\n

And, to be sure, the idea of the rise of a pagan monarch in the First Testament paralleling the rise of a democratically elected president may seem surprising. However, there are several striking links between the Babylonians\u2019 reception to the rise of Cyrus and the American presidential campaign and election in 2016.<\/p>\n

First, in both situations, an outsider rose to the supreme political position in the state. Cyrus was a Persian and a foreigner to Babylonian politics. A career businessman and entertainer, Trump\u2019s rise involved eliminating a series of establishment Republican candidates before defeating the establishment Democratic candidate.<\/p>\n

Second, although we do not know how Jewish exiles in Babylon felt about Cyrus when he first arrived, the grassroots citizenry greeted both Trump and King Cyrus enthusiastically. …<\/p>\n

President Trump\u2019s campaign targeted evangelicals, many of whom had felt marginalized during his predecessor\u2019s eight years in office. In his two terms, Barack Obama alienated many conservative Christians when he stopped enforcing the Defense of Marriage Act, came out in support of gay marriage (and shockingly lit up the White House with rainbow colors after the Supreme Court\u2019s affirmation of marriage equality), and, through the Department of Health and Human Services mandate, compelled people opposed<\/a> to certain forms of birth control because of their faith commitments to provide it to their employees. …<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s rhetoric recalls Cyrus\u2019s promise to restore the proper worship of Marduk and to liberate the citizenry from the exploitation and abuse they had previously suffered.<\/p>\n

But although these parallels are impressive, concluding that Trump imitates Cyrus ignores key differences in their stories. For starters, Trump is not a conquering emperor. He has not inherited what was once the land of Israel as part of his empire, the Jewish population of the world are not his subjects by virtue of his conquest of another nation, and he has not authorized the reconstruction of the temple in Jerusalem. 10\/29\/18 https:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/ct\/2018\/october-web-only\/donald-trump-cyrus-prophecy-old-testament.html<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Because certain Jews and Evangelicals believe Donald Trump is a Cyrus, does that make him one?<\/p>\n

No.<\/p>\n

Before going further, perhaps it should be pointed out that in March of 2017, Donald Trump did attribute a quote to Cyrus the Great (see Donald \u2018Trump of God,\u2019 Cyrus, or Apocalyptic?<\/a>). When he did this, at least in my view, he was trying to make the Cyrus connection himself as he seemingly was aware of others that claimed he was a type of Cyrus.<\/p>\n

As far as Cyrus goes, here is the Cyrus prophecy from the Bible:<\/p>\n

24<\/span> \u201cThis is what the LORD says\u2014 your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the LORD, the Maker of all things, who stretches out the heavens, who spreads out the earth by myself, <\/span>25<\/span> who foils the signs of false prophets and makes fools of diviners, who overthrows the learning of the wise and turns it into nonsense, <\/span>26<\/span> who carries out the words of his servants and fulfills the predictions of his messengers, who says of Jerusalem, \u2018It shall be inhabited,\u2019 of the towns of Judah, \u2018They shall be rebuilt,\u2019 and of their ruins, \u2018I will restore them,\u2019 <\/span>27<\/span> who says to the watery deep, \u2018Be dry, and I will dry up your streams,\u2019 <\/span>28<\/span> who says of Cyrus, \u2018He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please; he will say of Jerusalem, \u201cLet it be rebuilt,\u201d and of the temple, \u201cLet its foundations be laid.\u201d \u2019 <\/span>(Isaiah 44:24-28)<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

45:1 \u201cThus says the Lord to His anointed,
\nTo Cyrus, whose right hand I have held \u2014
\nTo subdue nations before him
\nAnd loose the armor of kings,
\nTo open before him the double doors,
\nSo that the gates will not be shut:
\n2 \u2018I will go before you
\nAnd make the crooked places straight;
\nI will break in pieces the gates of bronze
\nAnd cut the bars of iron.
\n3 I will give you the treasures of darkness
\nAnd hidden riches of secret places,
\nThat you may know that I, the Lord,
\nWho call you by your name,
\nAm the God of Israel.
\n4 For Jacob My servant\u2019s sake,
\nAnd Israel My elect,
\nI have even called you by your name;
\nI have named you, though you have not known Me. (Isaiah 45:1-4)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We see that this was fulfilled in Ezra:<\/p>\n

1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying,<\/p>\n

2 Thus says Cyrus king of Persia:<\/p>\n

All the kingdoms of the earth the Lord God of heaven has given me. And He has commanded me to build Him a house at Jerusalem which is in Judah. 3 Who is among you of all His people? May his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem which is in Judah, and build the house of the Lord God of Israel (He is God), which is in Jerusalem. 4 And whoever is left in any place where he dwells, let the men of his place help him with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, besides the freewill offerings for the house of God which is in Jerusalem.<\/em><\/p>\n

5 Then the heads of the fathers\u2019 houses of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and the Levites, with all whose spirits God had moved, arose to go up and build the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem. 6 And all those who were around them encouraged them with articles of silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with precious things, besides all that was willingly offered.<\/p>\n

7 King Cyrus also brought out the articles of the house of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from Jerusalem and put in the temple of his gods; 8 and Cyrus king of Persia brought them out by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and counted them out to Sheshbazzar the prince of Judah. (Ezra 1:1-9)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Pulpit Commentary<\/em> states this about the prophecy in Isaiah:<\/p>\n

It is certainly a very marvellous thing that Isaiah, living at the close of the eighth and the beginning of the seventh century B.C.<\/span>, should -mention a king by name who did not ascend the throne till the middle of the sixth; but no one can suppose that God could not have made such a revelation to him if he pleased.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Donald Trump is NOT doing the same thing and the Cyrus prophecy was fulfilled thousands of years ago.<\/p>\n

But various Protestants and some others have attempted to claim that Donald Trump is a modern day Cyrus and\/or the \u201ctrump of God\u201d (see Donald \u2018Trump of God,\u2019 Cyrus, or Apocalyptic?<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Donald Trump is apocalyptic\u2013chapter 7 of my book Donald Trump and America\u2019s Apocalypse<\/a> is titled \u201c20 Reasons Why Donald Trump is Apocalyptic,<\/strong>\u201d and world events have already begun to confirm basically all of those 20 reasons (see Donald Trump in Prophecy<\/a> and\/or watch Trump Presidency Magic 8 Ball or Bible Prophecy?<\/a>).<\/p>\n

But unlike Cyrus, Donald Trump was not prophesied by name to get a Jewish temple rebuilt.<\/p>\n

On December 6, 2017, US President Donald Trump fulfilled a campaign promise related to the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. This brought anger, protests, and rockets from some Palestinians. It also brought condemnation from European allies–it has been claimed to be disruptive and even catastrophic. The Palestinian President (Mahmoud Abbas) said that this pronouncement eliminated the USA as being a fair mediator for a peace deal. Others have claimed that Donald Trump is an end time Cyrus and his pronouncement will lead to a Third Temple in Jerusalem. Is there ever going to be a peace deal? If so, will Europeans be part of it? Is Donald Trump a ‘Cyrus.’ Do the Jews require a Third Temple for sacrifices? Dr. Thiel answers those questions and more.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It is not biblically required. Donald Trump is not a modern day Cyrus–though with these coins and comments from others, Donald Trump may be thinking that he is.<\/p>\n

Anyway, no, the change in US position regarding Israeli settlements is NOT the fulfillment of Jeremiah 31.<\/p>\n

While many in Israel are pleased with President Trump’s policy change, it simply is not related to Jeremiah 31:22-25.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
