MUNICH (Reuters) – European powers Germany and Britain urged Egypt on Saturday to change leaders rapidly but take its time holding elections, saying traditions of tolerance and fairness had to be built to make democracy work.<\/p>\n

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and European Council President Herman van Rompuy reiterated demands for a rapid “transition” — a phrase that has become a diplomatic codeword for the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak after 30 years of military-backed autocracy.<\/p>\n

But they said caution would be needed in the aftermath.<\/p>\n

“I don’t believe that we solve the world’s problems by flicking a switch and holding an election … Egypt is a classic case in point,” Cameron told a security conference in Munich.<\/p>\n

“I think a very quick election at the start of a process of democratization would be wrong,” Merkel told the same meeting…<\/p>\n

Political analysts say European caution about free elections in Egypt will be seen by many in the Middle East as evidence of Western anxiety about the possibility that Islamists could come to power in the Arab world’s most populous country.<\/p>\n

Critics of Western diplomacy in the region says this anxiety reflects a double standard, namely that the West compromises on its democratic ideals when the outcome would be unfavorable.<\/p>\n

Egypt’s largest opposition movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, is tolerated by the authorities despite being officially banned. The Brotherhood says that, if given the freedom to choose, most of Egypt’s 80 million population would choose a form of Islamic law, although it is publicly committed to political pluralism.\u00a0\u00a0 http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/02\/05\/us-egypt-europe-idUSTRE71416L20110205<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Such an attempt on the life of <\/span>Omar Suleiman<\/span> would mark an alarming turn in the uprising against the government of <\/span>President Hosni Mubarak<\/span>, who only recently named Suleiman as vice president in an effort to quell the unrest and possibly line up a successor…<\/span><\/p>\n

Suleiman also comes with an image problem of his own after serving as head of Mubarak’s intelligence forces.<\/span><\/p>\n

As spy chief, he was known for his strong-arm tactics and was seen as one of the region’s most feared and revered intelligence chiefs.<\/span><\/p>\n

To bring enough Arab nations together, I have felt that some type of “strongman” needed to rise up. One who Arabs would tend to respect. The time may be now and the Muslim Brotherhood may play an important role.\u00a0 Because of his past, while Omar Suleiman <\/span>seems to be a strongman type, his history may make him too unpopular for that role.<\/p>\n

The Arab world is undergoing a swift and increasingly violent transformation. How do these tumultuous events align with Bible prophecy? What is ahead for the Middle East? Is the stage being set for the emergence of the end-time king of the South?<\/div>\n

Daniel 11:40-43 reveals that immediately before Christ\u2019s return, a European-based \u201cking of the North\u201d and an Arab-based \u201cking of the South\u201d will engage in a brief, but brutal, war.\u00a0 The northern armies will temporarily overrun the southern empire, only to be forced to abruptly evacuate to confront mighty armies from \u201cthe east\u201d and \u201cthe north\u201d (v. 44).<\/p>\n

Naturally, in order for these prophecies to be fulfilled, a confederation of Arab states, primarily \u201csouth\u201d of Jerusalem, and led by a powerful leader, is required.\u00a0 The timing is entirely up to God, but events in the Middle East today are rapidly setting the stage<\/em> for the fulfillment of these prophecies.\u00a0 It is not just \u201cradical Islam\u201d or \u201canti-Semitism\u201d or \u201crising food prices\u201d that have sparked this massive wave of change.\u00a0 There are deeper and more profound causes.<\/p>\n

In Egypt<\/strong>, an admittedly imperfect government with the most powerful regional military, which has long cooperated with the United States and has long supported peace with Israel, appears on the verge of collapse.\u00a0 And the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood and other \u201cextremist\u201d elements are more openly and more aggressively asserting their vision (The Washington Post<\/em>, February 3, 2011). In Jordan<\/strong> \u2013 the only other Arab nation to officially accept peace with Israel<\/em>; King Abdullah II \u2013 is under similar pressure.\u00a0 King Abdullah recently dismissed his entire government, and faces mounting pressure from the Islamic Action Front, which is the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood (Bloomberg<\/em>, February 3, 2011).<\/p>\n

Unrest and demonstrations have also \u201csuddenly\u201d erupted in Yemen<\/strong>, Tunisia<\/strong>, Lebanon<\/strong>, Algeria<\/strong> and Sudan<\/strong>.\u00a0 There are rumors that even Saudi Arabia<\/strong>, the world\u2019s largest oil exporter and the Arab world\u2019s largest economy, is concerned about social unrest (Financial Times<\/em>, February 3, 2011).<\/p>\n

What is happening in the Arab world, and why are these events moving forward at such a ferocious pace?\u00a0 Read Daniel 11:41-43 again.\u00a0 Some of the key players comprising the empire of the future \u201cking of the South\u201d are the nations of Egypt<\/strong>, Libya<\/strong> and Ethiopia<\/strong>! These are all Arab (and primarily Sunni) nations, which are located primarily south<\/em> of Jerusalem, that are prophesied to enter into a confederacy with their Arab brothers, as is also indicated in Psalm 83.<\/p>\n

Obviously, for these prophecies to be fulfilled, Egypt, in particular, cannot<\/em> remain an ally of Israel or the United States!\u00a0 And the Arab world, in general, must<\/em> turn more \u201cfundamentalist.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fact is that food prices, the Muslim Brotherhood or any number of other political or religious factors are only contributing reasons<\/em> for the current Arab-world turmoil.\u00a0 The underlying reason<\/em> is that the Almighty Creator God is allowing geopolitics to align according to His will, and according to His time!\u00a0 Scripture is clear that God supremely reigns over all<\/em> nations and all<\/em> empires (2 Chronicles 20:6, Daniel 4:25), and He sometimes allows demonic principalities<\/em> to influence people, nations, and rulers (Daniel 10:20, Ephesians 6:12).<\/p>\n

Is the current Arab crisis setting the stage for a future king of the South?\u00a0 While the timing <\/em>is entirely up to God, the simple answer is that yes<\/em>, Arab geopolitics are moving ahead exactly<\/em> as Bible prophecy has long foretold! Read more <\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The timing seems to be right for such a leader to start rising up. The events in Egypt, Lebanon, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Jordan, Yemen, Sudan, and elsewhere seem to be setting the stage of the Arabic peoples to be willing to consider some type of confederation with a strong leader to represent them.–but there may be interim governments first.<\/p>\n

If protests continue to expand in the Middle East, this could trigger other events which will possibly contribute to both the King of the South and the King of the North rising up and\/or gaining power.<\/p>\n
