Police arrested another woman for holding up a sign displaying the British flag and calling for Hong Kong\u2019s independence. Three other women were detained for possessing items advocating independence. Further details were not immediately available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-167 Component-p-0-2-159\">Hong Kong police said on Facebook that they arrested more than 180 people on various charges, including unlawful assembly, possession of weapons and violating the national security law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-167 Component-p-0-2-159\">The arrests come as thousands took to the streets Wednesday in an anti-government protest on the 23rd anniversary of Britain\u2019s handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997. For the first time, police banned this year\u2019s annual march. Protesters shouted slogans, lambasted police and held up signs condemning the Chinese government and the new security law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-167 Component-p-0-2-159\">The law, imposed by China following last year\u2019s anti-government protests in the semi-autonomous territory, makes secessionist, subversive, or terrorist activities illegal, as well as foreign intervention in the city\u2019s internal affairs. Any person taking part in secessionist activities, such as shouting slogans or holding up banners and flags calling for the city\u2019s independence, is violating the law regardless of whether violence is used. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/481e4051462954f6ddc3bb3079f14ad4\">https:\/\/apnews.com\/481e4051462954f6ddc3bb3079f14ad4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>July 1, 2020<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong was facing up to a new reality on Wednesday, after China&#8217;s central government imposed a sweeping\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/07\/01\/asia\/hong-kong-national-security-law-intl-hnk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-id=\"107\" data-m=\"{&quot;i&quot;:107,&quot;p&quot;:46,&quot;n&quot;:&quot;partnerLink&quot;,&quot;y&quot;:24,&quot;o&quot;:3}\">national security law<\/a>\u00a0late the night before that critics say has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/07\/01\/asia\/hong-kong-national-security-law-intl-hnk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-id=\"108\" data-m=\"{&quot;i&quot;:108,&quot;p&quot;:46,&quot;n&quot;:&quot;partnerLink&quot;,&quot;y&quot;:24,&quot;o&quot;:4}\">stripped the city<\/a>\u00a0of its autonomy and precious civil and social freedoms, and cements Beijing&#8217;s authoritarian rule over the territory.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds turned out to protest the legislation in the busy shopping district of Causeway Bay but were met with a heavy security presence. Riot police fired pepper spray into the crowd, kettled and dispersed protesters, and deployed water cannons.<\/p>\n<p>During the protest, Hong Kong Police made the first arrest under the new law &#8212; a man who was holding a black flag carrying the words &#8220;Hong Kong independence,&#8221; police said on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; people were arrested under the charges of illegal assembly, violating the national security law, obstruction of police, and possession of offensive weaponry, according to police.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/06\/25\/asia\/hong-kong-national-security-law-explainer-intl-hnk-scli\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-id=\"109\" data-m=\"{&quot;i&quot;:109,&quot;p&quot;:46,&quot;n&quot;:&quot;partnerLink&quot;,&quot;y&quot;:24,&quot;o&quot;:5}\">The national security law<\/a>\u00a0came into effect in Hong Kong in the lead-up to July 1 &#8212; the 23rd anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong from British rule to China &#8212; and dramatically broadens the powers of local and mainland authorities to investigate, prosecute and punish dissenters.<\/p>\n<p>In vague language, the law criminalizes secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign powers. People convicted of such crimes can face sentences of up to life in prison.<\/p>\n<p>July 1 is traditionally a day of protests in the city but for the first time since handover, police did not give permission to protesters to hold peaceful demonstrations. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/news\/world\/hong-kong-protests-first-arrest-made-under-new-security-law\/ar-BB16bCPq?ocid=ientp\">https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/news\/world\/hong-kong-protests-first-arrest-made-under-new-security-law\/ar-BB16bCPq?ocid=ientp<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The new security law was approved in China in late May (see <a title=\"Permanent Link to China approves Hong Kong National Security Law\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/prophecy\/china-approves-hong-kong-national-security-law\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">China approves Hong Kong National Security Law<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Here are some views of it from some who oppose it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>VOA Cantonese Service reporter Iris Tong talked with three pro-democracy activists about their reaction to the law and the future of Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tony Chung, 19,\u00a0Student localism\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chung\u00a0is the organizer of\u00a0Student localism,\u00a0a political organization\u00a0of mostly middle school students\u00a0that\u00a0advocated\u00a0Hong Kong\u2019s independence.\u00a0He\u00a0said\u00a0the organization would no longer be effective if\u00a0members risked breaking the law by handing out\u00a0leaflets and shouting slogans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to hand over our operations to those members who\u00a0are\u00a0abroad,&#8221; he said.\u00a0\u201cThey can keep promoting our ideas through online articles and pages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chung\u00a0thinks the\u00a0law will foster more political polarization in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne group of people will just be more obedient.\u00a0They understand you can\u2019t speak your mind\u00a0or\u00a0have to\u00a0be extremely careful when expressing your opinions. The other group will resort to extreme force. They will say,\u00a0\u2018Talking is useless,\u2019 and might resort to force. So,\u00a0I think some armed attack and small conflict can\u2019t be ruled out,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ventus Lau, 26,\u00a0Hong Kong Civil Assembly Team<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lau\u00a0is the\u00a0spokesman for the Hong Kong Civil Assembly Team,\u00a0which supported other civil\u00a0rights\u00a0groups in last year\u2019s anti-extradition protests. He\u00a0said the fact that no one knows the details of the new law is\u00a0absurd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ridiculous thing is we don\u2019t even know if we have violated the law. For example, if you steal something, you know you have committed a crime and might face arrest. But with the national security law, we don\u2019t know if we have committed a crime, or if any past actions would be subject to this law. We are all guessing here. This is not a\u00a0law\u00a0\u2014\u00a0this is an excuse for the CCP to suppress dissidents,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Albert Ho, 68,\u00a0HK Alliance\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ho is vice chairman of HK Alliance, a democratic organization\u00a0formed in 1989 to support the Tiananmen Square\u00a0demonstrations in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t need to go into exile, nor do I need to dissolve my organization,\u201d\u00a0he said. \u201cWe have never advocated for Hong Kong independence, and we have always advocated the use of peaceful methods to promote reform. We have never been in favor of using violence to change the status quo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said people must be more flexible to continue their fight. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/east-asia-pacific\/voa-news-china\/hong-kong-activists-react-chinas-national-security-law\">https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/east-asia-pacific\/voa-news-china\/hong-kong-activists-react-chinas-national-security-law<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, some expect violent protests, while others hope other means will be effective.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2019, I posted an article titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/2020prophecies.html\">20 items to prophetically watch in 2020<\/a>. Here is something from number 7 of those items:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"style4\">7. Strife and the Red Horse of War<\/h2>\n<p class=\"style4\">Notice the following:<\/p>\n<p class=\"style4\">3 When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, \u201cCome and see.\u201d 4 Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword. (Revelation 6:3-4)<\/p>\n<p class=\"style4\">Somewhat paralleling the ride of the second horseman of Revelation 6:3-4, Jesus warned about wars and disturbances \u2026 Notice how the Orthodox Jewish Bible translates the first half of Matthew 24:7:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"style4\">For there will be an intifada of ethnic group against ethnic group, \u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We expect to see more wars, rumors of war, and civil unrest.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We are seeing this.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Intifada<\/i> is an Arabic word literally meaning, as a noun, \u201ctremor\u201d, \u201cshivering\u201d, \u201cshuddering.\u201d It is derived from an Arabic term <i>nafada<\/i> meaning \u201cto shake\u201d, \u201cshake off\u201d, \u201cget rid of.\u201d (Intifada. Wikipedia, accessed 06\/11\/20)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The call for people in Hong Kong to arise is not the solution. Hong Kong simply does not have the physical might, etc. to be able to stop China from asserting influence. The ultimate solution, of course, for Hong Kong and China will be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/GospeloftheKingdomofGod.pdf\">Kingdom of God<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although many in Hong Kong want to cast off control from China, that is not going to be successful. During the time of that lease, it was considered a British colony. But that lease ended. While officially, Hong Kong is supposed to be separate until 2047 because of treaty negotiated between the British and the Chinese, it had a security provision which the government of the People&#8217;s Republic of China has decided to exercise, but in a manner protesters in Hong Kong did not want.<\/p>\n<p>I have long warned that the situation in Hong Kong would change. People in Hong Kong need to see &#8220;the handwriting on the wall&#8221; (Daniel 5).<\/p>\n<p>Consider something I posted here related to Hong Kong protests in 2015:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The protesters have asked for more separation of systems than the Chinese government currently prefers, but ultimately Hong Kong will be even more dominated by China. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong, because of its &#8230; its apparent prophetic place, will closer align with China &#8230; despite what today\u2019s protesters may prefer. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.&#8221; 16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon (Revelation 16:12-16).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The literal translation of the expression &#8216;the kings of the east&#8217; in Revelation 16:12 is &#8220;the kings of the sunrise&#8221; and thus this would seem to have to include places like Taiwan, which is east of mainland China as well as a place where the sunrise happens first.
