Australia has come out with a position against China’s territorial claims on the South China Sea:<\/p>\n

South China Sea dispute: Australia says Beijing’s claims have no legal basis<\/h2>\n

Australia has formally rejected China’s territorial and maritime claims in the South China Sea, aligning itself more closely with the US as tensions rise.<\/p>\n

In a declaration to the United Nations, Australia said the claims, which take in the majority of the sea, had “no legal basis”. China has not reacted.<\/p>\n

It comes after the US called some of China’s actions in the area “unlawful”.<\/p>\n

In recent years China has built bases on artificial islands in the sea, saying its rights go back centuries.<\/p>\n

Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam contest China’s claims. The countries have wrangled over territory for decades but tensions have steadily increased in recent years, with several maritime confrontations taking place. …<\/p>\n

What is Australia’s position?<\/h3>\n

Australia’s declaration to the UN, submitted on Thursday,<\/a> reads: “Australia rejects China’s claim to ‘historic rights’ or ‘maritime rights and interests’ as established in the ‘long course of historical practice’ in the South China Sea.” …<\/p>\n

What is the US position?<\/h3>\n

The US has long been critical of China’s militarisation of the region, and the Trump administration has recently reversed a policy of not taking sides, explicitly backing the territorial claims of China’s South East Asian neighbours.<\/p>\n

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said earlier this month some of China’s actions were “completely unlawful”<\/a>, condemning Beijing’s “campaign of bullying to control” the area. In response, China said the US “deliberately distorts facts and international law”. https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-australia-53536173<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Australia is in a difficult spot. It fears China, but is economically highly linked to China.<\/p>\n

Notice the following regarding economic intertwinings:<\/p>\n

China is Australia’s largest trading partner in terms of both imports and exports. Australia is China’s sixth largest trading partner; it is China’s fifth biggest supplier of imports and its tenth biggest customer for exports. Twenty-five per cent of Australia’s manufactured imports come from China; 13% of its exports are thermal coal to China. …<\/p>\n

Ninety per cent of Australia’s merchandise imports are from China and, of those, 90% are elaborately-transformed manufactures. China has made military threats against Australia in the past. China\u2019s Global Times<\/em> published the following nearly four years ago:<\/p>\n

Around the announcement of the arbitration tribunal over the South China Sea, Australia was one of the most delirious countries. Canberra immediately supported the arbitration result and claimed China \u201cmust\u201d abide by it, and also signed a joint declaration with the US and Japan. Australia has inked a free trade agreement with China, its biggest trading partner, which makes its move of disturbing the South China Sea waters surprising to many.<\/p>\n

Australia is a unique country with an inglorious history. It was at first an offshore prison of the UK and then became its colony, a source of raw materials, overseas market and land of investment. This country was established through uncivilized means, in a process filled with the tears of the aboriginals. \u2026<\/p>\n

Australia calls itself a principled country, while its utilitarianism has been sizzling. It lauds Sino-Australian relations when China\u2019s economic support is needed, but when it needs to please Washington, it demonstrates willingness of doing anything in a show of allegiance.<\/p>\n

Analysts say that besides trying to please the US, it also intends to suppress China so as to gain a bargaining chip for economic interests. China must take revenge and let it know it\u2019s wrong. Australia\u2019s power means nothing compared to the security of China. If Australia steps into the South China Sea waters, it will be an ideal target for China to warn and strike.<\/p>\n

Australia is not even a \u201cpaper tiger,\u201d it\u2019s only a \u201cpaper cat\u201d at best. At a time when its former caretaker country the UK is dedicated to developing relations with China, and almost the whole of Europe takes a neutral position, Australia has unexpectedly made itself a pioneer of hurting China\u2019s interest with a fiercer attitude than countries directly involved in the South China Sea dispute. So, China was indicating that Australia is basically illegitimate (established through uncivilized means<\/em>) and that its power basically means nothing to China. Furthermore, \u00a0China must take revenge and let it know it\u2019s wrong<\/em>.<\/p>\n

China obviously feels that Australia is wrong about its rejection of China’s claim related to the South China Sea.<\/p>\n

China also has long had eyes on Australia. Notice the following:<\/p>\n

Trade Minister Steven Ciobo sought to downplay reports of strained ties with China after state media said Australia should be punished for its arrogance.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Bloomberg Television, Ciobo acknowledged that there were differences of opinion and said dialogue between the two trading partners was critical. But he insisted the relationship was on a sound footing.<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of us get particularly worked up over media. Whether it is media here in Australia or media in China, there are elements of it that frankly hyperventilate,\u201d Ciobo said Thursday. \u201cWhat matters is the high-level discussions that actually take place.\u201d<\/p>\n

China\u2019s Foreign Minister Wang Yi earlier this week blamed Australia for difficulties in the relationship, saying the nation should \u201cdiscard its traditional thinking and take off its tinted glasses to take a proactive approach towards China\u2019s development.\u201d …<\/p>\n

China\u2019s Global Times newspaper this week said Beijing should cut imports to teach \u201carrogant\u201d Australia a lesson and leave it \u201changing for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ciobo said that China had in the past accused Australia of being too \u201cbeholden\u201d to the U.S. — its most important security partner. China has made similar disparaging comments about Australia before. Contrary to the hopes of people like Australia’s Trade Minister Steven Ciobo, this will not end well for Australia. What will Australia do?<\/p>\n

Australia has always believed that it doesn\u2019t have to choose between its economic relationship with China and its defense alliance with the United States. But 2018 is already shaping up to be the year of the hard choice. …<\/p>\n

There is a lot at stake, including potentially Australia\u2019s ongoing prosperity.<\/p>\n

China is clearly not happy with Australia\u2019s adherence to the US alliance and if it follows through on veiled threats to boycott Australian exports and limit investment, Canberra\u2019s loyalty to Washington could come at the expense of significant economic pain.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s hawkish Global Times newspaper, widely viewed as a mouthpiece for the ruling Communist Party, spared no niceties in an op-ed last week that warned Australia against \u201cinterference\u201d in the South China Sea (SCS) territorial disputes.<\/p>\n

Australia was \u201ckissing up\u201d to the US and risked \u201cpoisoning\u201d its relations with China, which could \u201cadopt strong countermeasures which will seriously impact Australian economic development.\u201d 01\/08\/18 http:\/\/www.atimes.com\/article\/australias-hard-choice-china-us\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Militarily, the Aussies realized decades ago that they would want to rely on the USA.<\/p>\n

Australia will learn that the USA will one day be defeated (Daniel 11:39) and not be able to defend it.<\/p>\n

It also will likely find out that China will take it over (watch Are Chinese threats against Australia for real?<\/a>). Currently, it is looking to take some steps:<\/p>\n

There is one threat, in five letters, that sits, unspoken, at the centre of the strategy \u2013 China. Australia now realises it lacks the tools for holding hostile forces of a major adversary at bay.<\/p>\n

That major adversary, which is about to deploy its third aircraft carrier, has developed its military capability much faster than a complacent Canberra imagined just four years ago.<\/p>\n

And China under Xi Jinping has demonstrated a more aggressively ambitious intent, too. Xi has cast aside the pretence of mutual respect and is now striving openly for dominance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What Canberra imagined might happen in 2030 has already happened in 2020. So Australia will now buy long-range ballistic missiles capable of striking enemy ships that might be blockading trade or coercing Australia or its regional friends.<\/p>\n

Only a few years ago, directed energy weapons firing destructive invisible lasers seemed the stuff of sci-fi.
