The Kent variant of coronavirus that has been spreading in the UK appears to be undergoing some ‘worrying’ new genetic changes, say scientists. <\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Tests on some samples show a mutation, called E484K, already seen in the South Africa and Brazil variants that are of concern.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It’s not unexpected that variants are appearing or that they will continue to change – all viruses mutate as they make new copies of themselves to spread and thrive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr Julian Tang, a virus expert at the University of Leicester, described the finding as “a worrying development, though not entirely unexpected”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He said it was important people follow the lockdown rules and get cases of coronavirus down to prevent opportunities for the virus to mutate further.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

So, the hope is that vaccines still should<\/em> work with this and other variants.<\/p>\n

Now it is possible that there are, or will be, variants that the various vaccines will not be effective enough to prevent.<\/p>\n

The fact that there have been several variants popping up despite lockdown rules, masks, social distancing, enhanced cleanings, etc. should be a signal to public health officials that perhaps they should tell people to improve their individual immune systems as well.<\/p>\n

But that rarely has been the case.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, because of government, media, and public health scare tactics, instead we have seen people do the opposite of what they should be doing for their immune systems.<\/p>\n

Specifically, people have been gaining weight–which suggests that they are eating more junk food and exercising less. They have been drinking more alcohol and smoking more cigarettes according to reports I have seen. They\u00a0 have been inside more, hence are getting less sunlight, which means less cholesterol is being turned into immune-supporting vitamin D.<\/p>\n
